I always thought "Howdy" sounded more personable, so I've used it since my teens.  Everyone else around me has always said "Hello" or "Hey".

I don't think it's acceptable anywhere here on the west coast. Maybe Oregon, idk I'm not from there but I get the feeling it flies over there

It only flies for old rugged guys in eastern Oregon by Idaho.

Some people use it around here. Chances are if they are driving a dually you'll be greeted with howdy.

I tend to use hi, or what up. Sometimes good morning/afternoon, but that depends on how many zeroes are involved.

I like to say "salutations" to throw people off.

Uh oh, check this educated guy out... Salutations?  Looks like someone read Family Circus as a kid....

I remember the last time I heard it...it threw me off so hard I had to shit my pants.

It's all we say in Wisconsin.

it's more of a general Midwestern thing I spank because you say the same thing in Ohio at times

I don't say it all the time but I have started saying it and I've noticed that a few other people say it around here.

What about folks at work?

"Howdy Dave! Hey how was the fishing this weekend?"

And then they say "I didn't catch anything."
And you say "That's why they call it fishing, not catching."

A real knee slapper right there.

Nah Dave catches all kinds of fish, perch mostly. Then we usually talk about the squirrels in his backyard for a bit.

Yeah perch was super easy.  There was a little rocky hole in the lake we use to go to that had tons of perch and crayfish.  Didn't even need a pole.  A length of fishing line, a hook and a small bit of worm worked just fine.

There are people at my job that LOOK like they'd say it, but I don't know them or talk to them.... the people I do know and talk to at work, do not say that.
