Police Response In D.C. Flies In The Face Of Right-Wing Self-Perception

Quote

While the police response in Washington, D.C., Wednesday may look like a disproportionate lack of force compared with the response to protests this summer, it is very much counter to the expectations of right-wing protesters who have come to perceive police as their allies. I just got off the phone with Ed Maguire, a professor of criminology at Arizona State University who studies interactions between protesters and police, and he told me that his interviews with protesters have shown a consistent pattern: Left-wing protesters believe that police are against them and will rough them up more than other kinds of protesters; right-wing protesters believe that police are on their side.

There’s not much empirical evidence to show whether those perceptions are true, but even unprovable beliefs can end up mattering a lot if they shape behavior. And these particular beliefs seem to do that, Maguire said. He pointed to the protest in Portland, Oregon, last summer, where right-wing protesters brought bear mace and other weapons to a protest and used them on both left-wing counterprotesters and members of the press. Even as that happened, he said, Portland police took a largely hands-off approach, something that ended up only increasing left-wing protesters’ sense of grievance against the police.

But today’s events are likely to change the game. When he interviewed right-wing protesters at Stop the Steal events in Arizona over the past few months, Maguire was surprised to find just how strong — and how religious — their belief in police support was. “They believed God was on their side and police were backing them,” he told me. “That leftists are Godless and they hate God and hate America. [But right-wing protesters] were God fearing moral people and police would always back them for that reason.”

Now, they have evidence that isn’t true. The use of police force against right-wing protesters — any force — upsets the apple cart of some very deeply held beliefs, Maguire said. And that’s likely to have consequences of some kind.

They keep saying the crowd was too big it outnumbered the police but how many Trump people in total came out? Seems like there were very few police.

Have they given any estimations of about how many people in total came in from around the country or w/e for Trump's live whatever the fuck today that led to this? I've heard the number that there's apparently 2,000 Capitol police in total on the payrolls but haven't heard how many of them were there on the job doing security, or how big the crowd for Trump was

That feeling when you gotta pee and the bathroom is just insight, but you still have to tell yourself "No, the time is not right.  Not yet."

I do not even know what they are so upset about. It is not like the election was stolen from them. Biden just outperformed Trump. There is not a single instance of voter or election fraud to date. I guess conservatives are just sore losers.

Seeing Ted Cruz, Lindsay Graham, and all those other members of Congress being escorted out with armed guards really pissed me off. They helped Trump with his failed coup today.
They didn’t deserve protection. They should’ve went out there and met with the constituents that they helped turn crazy.

Yeah I know right? It is like really? You are going to protect people who are trying to destroy the country? Sheesh.

@Mortir take your confusion and fuck your self with it

Look I know emotions are running high we have a group of people literally trying to undermine the will of the people and overturn a fair and legitimate election but we all just need to calm down. Biden will be inaugurated and things will go back to normal and the healing can finally begin.

The "President of Law and Order" sure can incite some awful chaos and rioting when he doesn't get his way.  The rhetoric he uses about minority and at risk groups such as "I never heard of Black Lives Matter," or backing Proud Boys is just appalling and IS the exact reason these actions took place.  Our gangster, soon-to-be ex-presidnet caused one of the most embarrassing days in US history.  It scares me as an American, it scares me as a human, and it scares me as a democrat.

What is going to be the word or phrase we use to describe all the dumb events of yesterday? It's not easy to make a catchy date-centric name like "9/11" out of 1/6/21

Has anyone suggested The Bay of Hogs yet?

On a serious note, it's going to go down in history something along the lines of "Trump Protests turned Trump Riots." Many of them are terrorists and supremacists.

Yeah it probably will have Trump in the name because that's who caused it.

Good question. I think the "Reichstag Failure" has a nice ring to it. I mean we should all be glad we basically stopped Hitler 2.0 from staging a catastrophe and assuming total power and control as a result. Really dodged a bullet imo. Those cops that shot and killed those insurrectionist nazis are national heroes and should all be awarded the Medal of Honor by Joe Biden on January 21.

Omg, are you really bucket again? It's  time to raw dog a Mexican whore to remember how risk works.

Huh? No I am just glad that the conservative nazis were not successful in stealing this completely legitimate and lawful election that was handedly won by Joe Biden. They underestimated the power of the people, the people that disagree with all their hatred and oppression. Good triumphed over evil. It is hard to not be ecstatic about this. Finally. This four year nightmare is coming to an end in just two short weeks. Blessed be.

trump is the biggest irl troll ive ever seen. i thought his antics in 2016 to 2017 was enough to claim that title, but now it is claimed hands down.

maybe he knows he will die before 2024 and decided to burn down everything as much as he can before he leaves/is forced out. he made nixon look like a grade school yard bully, in comparison.

If it's any consolation, I'll believe your new character just as i did the rest...I mean, the worst that is going to happen is the 2 tenors singing pills every time they see you...Hardly scathing and worth the effort.

I know this is speaking the long since obvious, but after yesterday, this is the exclamation point on the whole thing.

There is NO denying it now. Only the most braindead, brainwashed, racist people will still NOT believe Trump was the worst president in U.S. history. There is no contest.

"You really think Hillary would have done any better?"

Not only would Hillary have done better... GWB would have done better.... Ozzy fucking Osbourne would have done better.... Air Bud would have done better.... a pet rock would have done better.... Nabs would have done better.

I have no doubts I will not see a worse U.S. president in my lifetime.... but will this country EVENTUALLY get someone even worse, by the time climate change destroys our civilization? On the one hand, it happened once, it can happen again.... On the other hand, Germany has done a bang-up job of not letting another Hitler rise to power. Back to the first hand, Hitler's rise to power wasn't even 100 years ago, and we probably got well beyond 100 years before our civilization is done for. So, we'll see.
