Raptorpat Posted November 18, 2023 Author Posted November 18, 2023 Quote A total of 60 House members, both Democrats and Republicans, have indicated either publicly or to POLITICO that they plan to change their vote in favor of expelling Santos after reviewing the damning findings of the Ethics report released Thursday. Only eight GOP members said that they would still vote against such an effort, with others still reviewing the ethics report or weighing their decision. And the number of members in support is ticking up. ... A GOP leadership aide, granted anonymity to speak bluntly, predicted: “He’s fucked.” https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/11/17/congress/santos-whip-count-00127847 2 Quote

Raptorpat Posted November 30, 2023 Author Posted November 30, 2023 Quote Nearly 90 House Republicans say they plan or are likely to support voting to expel George Santos from Congress. That means it’s a near-certainty the indicted lawmaker will be out this week. https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/11/29/congress/expelling-santos-whip-count-00129052 1 4 Quote

The Gov I believe is required within the next ten days or so to schedule an election a couple months out. So there will probably be a special in early spring. In NY, special election candidates are chosen by party leaders directly (no primary), and the general sense is that they will nominate Tom Suozzi to run. He was the incumbent but opted to primary Hochul for Gov from the right last cycle, which is why the seat was open. It'll definitely be a test to see how damaged the Dem brand is on Long Island. 4 Quote

You’d think after picking a Santos LI might think twice but idk too much about LI other than it’s a weird mix of urban and rural areas. 2 Quote

It’s equal parts old money, people forced out of NYC by cost, and areas that run the gamut between isolated and middle class. I find a lot of the people driven from NYC tend to be more conservative. 3 Quote
Raptorpat Posted December 1, 2023 Author Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) Suozzi should be the favorite - he was the incumbent a year ago, it's theoretically a blue-leaning swing district (Biden won it by like 8 points in 2020), and he's very conservative for a Dem. If he can't win, then that probably means Long Island is mostly off the table for now. Edited December 1, 2023 by Raptorpat 2 Quote
SwimOdin Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 @Raptorpat you probably know, when was the last time a member of congress was expelled? Quote
Raptorpat Posted December 1, 2023 Author Posted December 1, 2023 I didn't know the dates, had to look it up. Two guys in 1980 and 2002 who were convicted of crimes, and three guys in 1862 who were literal confederates. 3 Quote

The first time a member has been expelled who hasn't either 1.) been convicted of a crime or 2.) supported the Confederacy. Santos probably will be convicted eventually though. Raptorpat Posted February 14, 2024 Author Posted February 14, 2024 To be fair, George Santos took Tom Suozzi's district because he ran for Governor instead. The snap-back was expected even though Long Island is trending conservative, the question is the margins and it seems like it was a blowout. 1 2 Quote
