I’ve noticed that people here don’t really fill out the Profile section of their account or have their real face pic as a user pic.  Is there some reason for this?  I keep meaning to ask Katt but it always slips my mind when we’re hanging out.

i don't...because although i enjoy conversing with 97% of the people here..

there are a few that would use any info they could be shitty people. because shitty people are shitty.

and i'd rather the less they knew about me...the better.

I think it really goes back to the days of ib. In case Kat didn't tell you, ib was a sub forum on the old Adult Swim message boards which is where most of us are from. On ib it was against the rules to use your pic as your avatar at least for the time I was there. It might have changed. I think it's a case of old habits dying hard. Personally, I treat this place as somewhere to goof off and blog so I don't care to use my real face.

cause I know what I look like....and my picture is in the picture thread....that’s all I need....I don’t crave that much attention

Back in the days of 'I Remember Betty' , the only pics possible for use were ones that were pre-loaded to the [ asmb ] featuring characters and items from shows that [ as ] currently had the rights to along with random site specific art. There were no 'personal' type ones possible because anything like that would have had to be approved by Turner legal first [ there were a lot of things in the early days that had miles of tape to wade through just for the forum to exist ] . Eventually, shortly after the HELPER thing started, personal downloads were able to be experimented with although they still had to go through Mod approval to try to weed out the hentai [ didn't always work but unless someone knew and called them on it, it could fly for a little anyway ] . However, many people still chose to stick with media avatars rather than personal photos because that's what we had really grown up on. Even when we moved from Lithium to nodebb and avatars were basically anything goes within reason, most stuck with things that meant something to them rather than straight up pics of themselves. We are a forum of insane shut-ins that are best displayed as cartoon characters. :D

I still remember my main avatars from the early years. Started out as Kirara the fire kitten from InuYasha, then confused tv-watching Faye from Cowboy Bebop, the cat magnet from the [ as ] fridge, and then Arthur the kitty from Code Geass before those avatars were banished. Final form on nodebb was my Bitch Pudding banner from the old boards.

Reading this made me so nostalgic, I had to pull out my original icon. Now it's all your fault if I don't know what I look like. :P

Eons of old message board "standards" people tended to not use selfies as avatars. I don't think it was really until facebook exploded in popularity that it became the norm. Like places like facebook, twitter, etc. The point is that people know who you are. In traditional message boards, the point was to remain anonymous.

So, I should delete my mugshot and bio as a matter of public safety then?

Im just one of those people who is an open book who has nothing to hide and doesn’t give a fuck.

Totally up to you. I literally pretend whatever image people have as their profile picture is them. Its only like 2 users with profile pictures that bother me

As someone mentioned, I've been around these assholes for over a decade, and most of them are on my PSN/ASMB Facebook page so they all know what I look like and know my personality, likes, fears, and whatnot.

There's never been a need for me to fill things out.

I just use anime characters and terrible memes as my profile pics.

for the first few years i was on the boards i had a "character" of sorts. as time went on i stopped keeping up with it and just kind of posted the inane bullshit that we all know and love. i'm still a very private person but it's hard to keep that up when you've been talking to the same 5 people for 14 years

I’ve just never been comfortable with the idea of online anonymity.  People hide behind made up personas and use them as a reason to act like assholes or fictionalize who they are.  It’s kind of creepy in a way.  Perhaps I’m wrong.  I just prefer to be...as real as possible.

Let's call it "net nuetrality" on a micro-level. Not everybody that wishes to remain anonymous has nefarious purposes in mind. The ones that do are often transparent as f anyway.

As far as being real, what little filter I once had is gone. I can't be a character, because I can't keep track of anything long enough. And as far as the picture, well, let's just say that, although it does have a lot to do with the years, it has even more to do with the mileage.

I really don't have many pictures of me taken, don't even have any less than 5 years old on FB. I posted my face in here quite a bit when I did some stupid youtube videos.

As for the profile stuff, never thought about it. I think I just thought it would be a waste of time to fill it out.

I've used the same two photos of me as Facebook profile pics for like three years now. I like using different pics for my icon/profile pic in most places. Makes me feel more expressive.

I’m currently using a photo I drew as my profile icon...

She caught my head as it was about to smash some giant rocks.
