I normally dip it on the side. There are many times I don't use any condiment with fries, and sometimes I use mayo, especially Japanese Kewpie mayo.

I avoid ketchup.  Most have HFCS, almost all have Onion powder, neither plays well with my gut.  I can't even have Malt Vinegar.

I use mayo, like the Belgians who invented "French" fries.

If I must, I’d dip fries into the ketchup separately, but I prefer to eat fries on their own with some salt. 

If they need something to go with them, I’d usually grab BBQ sauce or something different like Mambo sauce, Okonomiyaki sauce, Sweet & Sour, or Honey Mustard.

I try to find a balance between dipping and smothering them. Doesn't always work out..
