Do you hunt?

Just asking?

If so, why? Is it fun?

My fear is I clip the animal and it suffers by dying of infection or something cruel.

But conflicted because I love fishing, and I have to imagine there is some sort of suffering in that? And then again, I'm positive the meats I eat there is some kind of something going on there... But out of sight out of mind, I guess.

Anyways, lay it on me.

Meat taste better with suffering.

Thought so.

You might as well take up hunting, you are practically married now. It's just a matter of time at this point. Buy a gun that's good at short range shots like a 30-30. Starting out you don't need to be aiming for a deer that's a mile away. If you decide to do archery, spend time and money to get set up with a bow and practice with it before you try to aim at an animal. Most of the stores (good stores) will have a practice range and staff that can set up your bow to your draw length and strength. A good bow can set you back around 500 without setup. The rifle will vary by brand and state. Something I enjoy is my 50 cal black powder rifle. Some states have special seasons just for black powder.

I've been hunting before, a lot of my family hunts. I don't like it just because I'd rather be inside. I'm not really the outdoors type :D

I agree . I spent about 3 hours in a deer stand and got nothing but cold. That was the extent of my hunting  experience

I like deer meat and bunny and have no problem with anybody who hunts for meat, but I'm definitely an indoor cat.

yup that's where I'm at. I have no problem with hunting or eating what they killed, but I'm not about standing out in the cold waiting for a deer to shoot :D

Just take the best of both worlds and go spear fishing. You get to hunt down your prey and shoot it, but it's still fish. Didn't quite kill it with the first spearing? It's still caught, just stab it again. Plus you're on a time limit with how much air you've got in the tank, so, bonus challenge. With the added risk of having to actually defend your prize, should something bigger and scarier come sniffing around.

I tried once when I was little, it was really fucking boring

I'm not against it, deer taste great but they're also adorable little forest doggos and I'd rather just drive a block to get a cheeseburger than sit in a tree stand for 8 hours hoping a deer comes by

I do love fishing though.  Mainly just catch and release these days and I use non barbed hooks to do less damage to them

*strokes chin whiskers, shades on, 1000 yard stare* it's been a long time since i've done any hunting. a long time...

we hunted everything on the farm as kids. squirrel, turkey, rabbit, deer, raccoon, coyote, various birds, pretty much anything that was wild and on our property. i moved away after high school, and haven't had anywhere to hunt since then. i'll still go out if i'm back home during a season, but that has't happened for several years.

we owned a small arsenal of firearms, but i was partial to my old remington .22 and my ithaca 12 gauge semi-automatic "deerslayer". oh, and the winchester .44 revolver. that thing was a cannon.

Only if I was in a situation where I needed it to survive, otherwise I don't get the point of it.  That's why human beings developed agriculture (and supermarkets), so we wouldn't be stuck as hunter-gatherers forever.  Now if it's to control overpopulation, like for deer around here, I'm fine with that too.  There are always idiots around here protesting cull hunts that have no concept of basic ecology.

Oh, and people who hunt "for sport" should be shot themselves. Like those fuckers who go to Africa and bag big game? Fucking drop dead you psycho pieces of shit.

fair points all around. we hunted for the food because it was a subsistence thing. it's a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a box of shells and spend some downtime processing critters, than it is to go to the meat locker or grocery store. we also butchered livestock, drank unpasteurized cow's milk straight out of the milk tank, and kept a garden that was usually on the 2+ acre size (not including sweet corn and potatoes, because those were grown in rows out in the strip crops).

but if we snagged a trophy buck or tom, sure we'd put it on the wall in the cabin. nothing wrong with taking a little pride in your work.
