LOL Toonami. So Lazzo has control of show selections now and is intentionally trying to kill the block? I mean, you don't pick up a show that's this widely hated by accident. It's currently rated 3.0 out of 5 on Crunchyroll. For comparison SAO is rated 4.4, and Naruto Shippuden a 4.7.

In addition to being considered a bad Manga, it's made by the same studio that made Tokyo Ghoul. Studio Pierrot. Much like TG even the people that like the manga say the anime adaptation is complete shit.

I've watched about 4 episodes... and yeah it's boring... but not as unwatchable as TG. But honestly almost nothing happens in those episodes, and it already has flashbacks and filler.

So yeah this seems like a baffling decision.... but I think what they're trying to do is jump on the next big thing before it blows up big like MHA and they can't get it anymore.

But this is easily the worst decision Toonami has ever made. TG may have  been awful, but it did have a fan base at least.

So it'll still soil on a personal level, then. Fair enough.

It will soil period. My personal like/dislike aside, an average of 30% of the audience changing the channel is a soiling.

BC might help the earlier shows, not having to air DBS at 8pm would certainly help but moving Jojo to 2am would be the best thing, to minimize the damage the weekly soiling does to everything else.

FYI, it's been announced to be 51episodes long.

But who KNOWS if it won't continue after that point?

Sure explains the god awful pacing of the first episodes....

Yeah, I'd be shocked it if actually is intended to stop at 51 episodes, even if that's the plan for the current batch. Would be shocked if they don't intend to make this the next long runner.

The fact that Jojo is having retention issues is proof positive that Toonami viewers as a whole have shit-tier taste.

Other than vague grumblings, I know very little about Black Clover, but that's what watching's for.  I think the more notable fact is that they're expanding the block even further.  Kind of kills the narrative that [as] is concerned about Toonami's ratings if they're giving it more space.

I have no idea if Lazzo is trying to kill the block. Why would he if it's been steadily growing its timeslots??

I haven't seen this anime. At first I wanted to. Then I found out it was gonna be a long running anime, and be the next "Naruto" which was all I needed to hear to drop it.

But from what I've heard of it, it's something like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA --(filler)-- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA --(end episode 1)-- --(begin episode 2)-- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...

Fair to say, I missed nothing. But now that Black Clover is coming to Toonami... excuse me... ToonAAAAAAAAAmi, I can hear the pain in English. (Though I heard the English VA did better. I can at least hope they're right.)

Having seen the first 4 eps, I agree with the dub response, Dallas Reid did way better, he sounds good, even Asta's yelling (which they tone down a bit, though obviously there's still plenty of it to match the yelling animations) is much less grating and loud thanks to his somewhat deeper voice and that he does it better.

The story beats so far are, as mentioned a lotvery familiar so far, but at least it's been a good listen IMO, as pretty much all of the voice casting so far has been quite good, while waiting to see if the show ever does get more distinct somewhere down the road to which I have no idea of at all since I'm not at all familiar with the manga. So on the plus side at least we've got voices that slide right into their characters well very quickly IMO. Both Asta and Yuno (played by Micah Solusod, who played Soul in Soul Eater) and the supporting characters at the church are well picked to me and the first little villain has a cool voice that worked well with the design and facial expressions to try to give him a little atmosphere

despite of course expecting the first fight to be a curbstomp.

And the couple of new voices for the rest of the main group they just started introducing, of which most were admittedly only the first small samples of, but a couple got more screentime, were well picked as well so far in the latest dub ep from last weekend.

For this show, I have to wonder if watchability is a thing that counts as an actual issue. Pretty much everyone involved with the production wants it to be a huge thing, from Pierrot, to whoever's airing it (I thought I heard it was TV Tokyo), to the English licensors. Hell, Crunchyroll plans to show it in the fucking theaters a few weeks from now.

This is a pretty big reason why I've become disillusioned with the anime industry in recent months. They pretty much force you to watch every show through coded advertisements. In fact, seemingly a day doesn't go by on CR's website without an article telling you to "get hooked" on anime that just came out, regardless if they're actually good or not. And then there was that promotion they did where you could watch episodes of eight shows, Black Clover included, to win a trip to Japan.

I just don't like how they operate like a ruthlessly efficient business, is all.

So I'm still wondering: Why did Lazzo take the reigns this year?

Yeah Crunchyroll has been trying to promote Black Clover with ass kissing articles.... but its rating on Crunchyroll is horrid. To give you an idea how bad a 3.0 is, the widely reviled and considered worst of the season "hand shakers" got a 2.7.

A pile of nonsense murder porn like "King's Game"... 2.5.

Black clover is a 3.0. So it's basically in the same league as the worst of the worst.

Oh and School days? 4.0

I don't know anything about this anime aside from seeing the logo and "box" on Funimation Now.  Thought about maybe possibly giving it a watch but I had other things to do.  So, I take it this show is not good?  I definitely am not in the mood for a Naruto clone, especially a bad one (that's saying something, lol), but I am going to try to give the show the benefit of the doubt and discover for myself as I watch it.  Still, with all the other shows out there, this is what they pick?  Eh.  And the fact it is expanding the block is baffling.  Is Toonami counting on this show to be the next Bleach or Dragonball Z to carry the block as its anchor?

It just hit me too that Netflix also probably has rights to Space Battleship Yamato 2199 once the season is over.  Because that’s a show that gets non-anime watchers excited.

I remember seeing a video about an LPer for an online game, World of Warships, who says in the video he doesn’t care about anime.  He was recommended Yamato 2199 by viewers and GUSHES over how amazing it is.  The drama, the action, etc.

We have Screaming McScreamyTon instead.

I mean Asta is still, HORRIFICALLY annoying in english, the screaming was toned down, A BIT, but he does still scream

Yeah, as was said earlier, it definitely wouldn't surprise me if they got a good deal on this show given how hard both the JP and US sides are pushing it.

Wow I did not see this coming. Does anyone like this show? I've heard nothing but bad things about it. Essentially it is Naruto remade in story. yelling, and stupidity. I've never seen it myself so I guess I'll watch and see what it is like but I have not met anyone yet who likes or has anything nice to say about it.

I am surprised they chose this one honestly over something like My Hero Academia or Blood Blockade.

My Hero Academia has a kinda high price tag right now. -.-; Don't know what the market price is on Blood Blockade though.

Honestly, Black Clover is just a Japanese re-telling of 'A Spell For Chameleon' by Piers Anthony if you really want to get technical. I'll watch it since I like the Xanth series as a form of brain candy anyway.

How much more can Toonami drop the ball and miss the boat at this point?  It's getting ridiculous!

I thought My Hero Academia was locked down by Netflix.  Gotta say that one doesn't interest me too much either though.

Maybe not counting on it, but yeah they probably are hoping for that to happen. Maybe Naruto being in filler hell and HxH being about halfway done also contributed. I'd imagine they're always looking for their next long-running gateway shonen show like Bleach, DBZ, Naruto, etc., so that they can get in on another one at the start like they did Bleach, and I guess it wouldn't be surprising if MHA was probably out of their price range since it became such a big hit so quickly just on Funi's streaming service (along with Crunchyroll) even before it went anywhere else.

Hopefully with them expanding the block for BC, rather than it taking something else's place, when one of the other shows ends early next year they'll be able to use one of the spots for one of the more adult aimed shows or at least one of more demanded crossover shows like Blood Blockade Battlefront (the mix of content in the show and Trigun creator/artist really makes it a no-brainer even if it's been streaming for a while it feels like it'd still be a huge hit with its mix of action, comedy, and colorful and hyper characters). If they'd like to keep the theme of revamped classics for the Lupin spot for at least one more time, Space Battleship Yamato 2199 would really be a great choice now that against all odds it's finally getting dubbed now.

Netflix locking down My Hero Academia along with all the other shows on their anime wishlist is akin to both SyFyllis buying and then sitting on the entire Manga Entertainment library and Comedy Central spending $30 million for the rights to Futurama only to have people lose interest in it rapidly [seriously, my cable company even dropped CC years ago]. It's a massive money sink that in the end does not help the company that has them, it just makes them look petty and insecure. Purchasing a show's rights should be done with intent to air.

Besides, isn't it Netflix that has that Yoko Ono Tokyo staring Will Smith's youngest idiot to pimp out hardcore to the masses? :D

I'm still disappointed they messed up on King's Game. Covering two mangas in 12 episodes was just asking to make a mess of things.

yeah, even before i'd heard it wasn't great, it looked like something that wouldn't be interesting.

i mean, i LOVE shonen, but this one doesn't seem like it works. why not MHA or Blood Blockade Battlefront.

oh, well. i'm compulsive, so i guess i'll give it a chance when it shows up.

seriously, Toonami, just bring back One Piece.
