rpgamer
https://aftermath.site/moxie-robot-ai-dying-llm-embodied Quote AI Company That Made Robots For Children Went Bust And Now The Robots Are Dying AI company Embodied announced this week that they would be shutting down following financial difficulties and a sudden withdrawal of funding. Embodied’s main product was Moxie, an AI-powered social robot specifically made with autistic children in mind. The robot itself cost $799.00 and now, following the closure of Embodied, it will cease to function. ... The response from Moxie owners seems fairly emotional. Parents have to explain to their kids that Moxie is functionally dying, although the company has “included a letter from the G.R.L. (Global Robotics Lab) to help guide this conversation in an age-appropriate way”. There are videos on TikTok of children and adults crying and asking Moxie what’s going to happen now. On some level I understand that reaction – even outside of dropping 800 bucks on this thing, it’s like watching a friend die. I could see a future in which another owner takes over or even one where these devices are hacked for local operation. 1

matrixman124
Howdy folks. New development in the last month. A Chinese developer has created Deepseek, an open source AI assistant to directly compete with ChatGPT. It works better, you can use it for free on your smartphone, and it runs on fairly underpowered hardware. This is basically OpenAI's worst nightmare because they've basically been pulling in investors saying that they could get a profitable AI model in 10 years with cutting edge hardware and datacenters powered by nuclear power plants. Deepseek shows that you actually can program something BETTER than ChatGPT with far far far less resources The true AI-pocalypse is coming Edited January 27 by matrixman124

tsar4
Just wondering if I have this right - "It" asked the big tech bros to make the US #1 in AI. Tech Bros say, "Well that will take $1 Trillion and a lot of chips". China says, "Hey we made ours with a lot less money and chips. Here!" Tech Bros. look like idiots as their stock tanks. China's AI becomes the #1 downloaded app on both Apple & Android. China shuts down the AI in China, because Chinese users are asking for info on "Tiananmen Square 1989". Insipid
I did a little experiement. DeepSeek gives a bullshit excuse not to answer questions pertaining to Taiwan and Tiananmen Square. I decided to ask it about eytmology. The official name of China in Chinese is 中華人民共和国. It is also the same characters used for the country in Japaneae. The funny thing is that the 人民共和国 (people's republic) compound was coined by Japanese scholars in the Meiji era. ChatGPT confirms this. DeepSeek denies it and says that it was coined by Chinese scholars during the Chinese revolution. 🙄
