So apparently, what is in question is "did Russia ever actually APPLY to be a member of the UN"?  The belief is that the answer is no, they just assumed the seat of the disbanded USSR and nobody questioned it at the time.

they were ukranian citizens killed by neo nazis. keep defending nazis.

TIf you look at Pat's graphic, it makes no such distinction between the Azov Batallion and the regular Ukrainian Army which was also operating in the region.  So, clearly, it was not just the Azov Battalion that killed 14,000 people.  In fact, it likely killed a fraction of that, though I do not believe any reliable data exists on that.  Keep defending a murderous despot who is throwing his own hapless citizens into a meaningless war.

azov is just one of the many neo nazis battalions in ukraine. why cant anyone here admit there is a neo nazi problem in ukraine? it doesn't fit liberal agenda. it was getting so bad that even mainstream publications had no choice but to acknowledge a problem there. even recently zelynsky has had to fire some high level staff for corruption.

the numbers are shaky for a reason, just like the numbers for the casualties amount on both sides, tho the numbers on the ukrainians side is unknown but estimated higher than the russian side.

this is a meaningless war but thats because the ukrainian government acted against the interests of its own people.

Also, I find it awfully convenient @Distortedreasoning can seemingly reference a white supremacy problem while ignoring the fact that the country’s president is Jewish.

It’s an absurd and trite thing to reference, because it refutes an absurd and trite assertion.  Obviously, anti-semitism can exist in a country being attacked by a land hungry neighbor.  The fact Putin would use it as an excuse highlights the disingenuous nature of his operation:  despots have long used cultural divisions to destabilize localities in advance of and during invasions.

I find it hard to disagree.  I mean, look who it brought into power in Russia.

gorbachev referred to the the chernobyl incident as the 'true' reason for the fall of the soviet union.

I remember it being a big deal when he watched the miniseries and gave it a mostly positive review.  It helps Gorby was one of the few Soviet officials not to come off as a sycophant or a blithering idiot.

Chornobyl (Ukrainian spelling)

One could make a case for the shooting down of KAL-007 too.

So, Russia has stopped all Nordstream 1 gas shipments to Europe until sanctions are lifted.

Fortunately China is willing to sell Europe their excess.

To be fair, when they said last week "oh yeah we got UHHHH unscheduled maintenance to do on the pipe" everyone should've been like "I don't believe you but okay."

EU to Russia:  Go ahead and sniff your gas all by yourself.

They're just burning off all the gas right at the plant, right across the border from Finland.

Idk is that like a triple spite? Spite the EU, spite Finland, spite the habitability of the biosphere.

Something tells me that if we traveled back in time to the 30s and 40s he would advocate for Poland to just give up parts of its Western country to appease Hitler.

Because thats basically the exact scenario thats playing out right now. "Give up huge chunks of your country to appease a dictator! Trust us! He will stop with just those small gains!"

just cuz he's jewish doesn't mean he didn't sell out. weakest argument to make, you can find corrupted politicians in any political system anywhere.

You're calling him a collaborator.  That's an extremely fraught, if not outright offensive, claim.

Sure would be nice if there was a country that could easily produce and ship LNG to the EU to help ease these energy issues.

The sheer amount of energy and waste required to load LNG onto cargo ships and move them across continents... You're so clownish for even suggesting this as an alternative

since when are facts offensive?

what you think happened to the neo nazis we supported and helped propped up in 2014? they went home and gave up power? they all the sudden voted for a jewish president, and poof neo nazis gone? they lost in crimea in 2014, but they still there and in power. thats how coupes work.

we supported moderate extremist groups to fight in syria, we supported dictatorships in suadi arabia, supported israel genocide of palestine, and so on. its very on par for the course of this country if you ask me.

not to mention they dont have the lng capacity to convert to energy. it will take them something like 2-3 years to get those going.

tho i have been reading that germany is opening coal plants but they still short on capacity.

how long you think before the public rises up?

the politicians have ramping up their police forces to respond to future protest.

Well this is fun. Its a dense read but there is a section in there about how Russian propagandists and milibloggers are losing their minds at how successful Ukraine has been at their counter offensive. They arent able to keep the propaganda up simply because the Ukrainians are overrunning positions so fast.

I’m not entertaining this bullshit.  There is no evidence Zelensky actively supported the Azov Batallion in any way.  It’s far more likely the Ukrainian military was forced to integrate them simply because having them as a second front in the fight against the Russians.  You suggesting that Zelensky stood by as neo nazis murdered Russians is stupid.

Zelensky took office in 2019 so I'm not sure what this stuff in 2014 would have to do with him.
He wasn't even a politician prior to that.

So as Russia redeployed some troops from the northern front to bolster their defenses in the Kherson region, Ukraine has gone on a massive counteroffensive in the north that has gone completely unresponded to over the past few days.

Haven't seen any official maps, but here's a sample:
