Elon Musk now owns Twitter, apparently trying to run it into the ground

I often compare people who complain about social media (many of them powerful people now, like lawmakers) to just people who complained because they got banned from a message board.

Like, it's NOT a federal case. You just got banned and are bellyaching about it.

Remember when Trump got banned from Twitter in 2021, and he went through all the phases some one does? He tried to use a bunch of alt accounts in quick succession to get around the ban, all of which got banned too.

Wtf is even going on at Twitter?  This is so unreal to me. I think Musk is purposely being incompetent so that when Twitter rebounds, which it definitely will because people’s lives and livelihoods are so connected to it, he can play Smug level over 9000.

everything he does is in service to his own ego and feelings, as superficial as they are. I can’t believe this shit isn’t on purpose.

Nah he's not smart. He wasted 44 billion on a website because of his hurt feelings.

I'm tempted to make a thread to talk about Bluesky...

I’m waiting for an invite. I’m pretty sure I gave them an email a few months ago. I never had a Twitter account. This should be fun if I can get a code.

In an email sent at 2:19 a.m. EST after the story was originally published, Musk wrote a message without any text in the body but with this subject line: "You suck."

Billionaire that owns/runs multiple businesses, everybody!

I have a writer friend who gave me a code. I haven't gotten any codes myself.

Highlights from today include the Alf Who Fucks taking over the What's Hot tab.

I have been on something called a Hellthread since Friday which is basically a thread that has so many people replying to each other that it breaks notifications so that you get one every time someone replies to the thread. It's fucking chaos and I've been loving it.

Oh. Thought you were implying the temptation to share some of the more unsettling aspects..

I mean it's still on a private beta and has one central server and provider for now. The protocol it's all built on will be able to support both new providers and servers. Nobody owns the AT protocol.

And there are other problems.

They banned nudity from the What's Hot tab which is a very hostile move to folks who depend on sex work.

The block feature was added specifically to block a trans woman who threatened to beat Matt Yglesias to death with a hammer. The first 3 bans were trans people including hammer girl. The other two bans have since been reversed.

Again, this is all private beta shit and Jack is completely hands off. Bluesky is being run by Jay Graber and Jack is more of a silent partner.

One of the lead developers Paul Frazee has been incredibly transparent on how the app works. So it's not like they're trying to scam everyone. The efforts seem genuine.

I'd almost kind of understand where they're coming from here if it wasn't for the fact that Matty Yglesias absolutely should be beaten to death with a blimp full of hammers, and it's absurd to expect any reasonable person to read his awful posts without feeling that strongly in their chest or being permitted to express it.

Oh cool Jay did respond.

They did use a boiler plate ToS and are going to revise it. People on Twitter need to chill until this thing is actually out of beta.

Aaand Twitter is now hosting Tucker Carlson's new show.

Twitter is dead.

Uh, can it?  He’s under a non-compete with Fox till the end of 2024.  That likely includes internet broadcasts.  Fox likely can and will sue his ass, even if to get some of that money back they paid Dominion.

Guess we have our answer. Hes walking away from $25M that Foxs owes him in order to launch his Twitter show. Musk probably offered him a pretty penny to do his broadcasts there. He brings a ton of eyeballs with him wherever he goes.

Yeah, Elon probably had way more sapphire cash to make it worth breaking the non compete. Because when your reputation is that low, what’s one more foot deeper?

I don't know how anyone involved thinks this is a good idea. Musk is a bumbling moron who lost billions of dollars for the purpose of "triggering" the libs with the crustiesy, boomerest memes imaginable, so I don't know how Carlson thinks this is a viable option.

And Twitter is in desperate need to advertisers now that Elon royally screwed that up. And his answer to getting advertisers back is.... advertiser napalm. The guy who got companies willing to put ads on Fox News to bail.

It’s a smart move on Tucker and Musk’s part if done right. Musk will get advertisers back because however many eyeballs are using Twitter is gonna be how many eyeballs watch Tucker Carlson on Twitter. Even if you don’t want to. Musk will tweak an algorithm and everyone suddenly will have Tucker Carlson talking straight doodoo wherever Twitter has room to run a small box with a talking asshole on it. That’s everyone every time they log in on desk top or mobile app. That’s a lot of eyes. Advertisers will be unable to resist.

as for non compete Tucker will say Fox already breached the contract when they fired him.  Fox I think denies this, because it is a breach, but Tucker claims that part of the dominion settlement was they had to fire him. He’s gonna get out of the contract one way or another

I get that but he was the anchor of the most watched news program in the country and advertisers found him so unappealing to anyone outside the Fox bubble that they still wouldn't advertise on his show.

I'm coming from the perspective that the fear of being associated with him at all would cause more damage than net benefit. Whether or not that holds true comes down to how much the companies care about reputation. He was the largest news anchor in the country but they still wouldn't advertise on his show out of potential reputational harm.

I'm sure he'll get some back since some will come from the same angle you are, and that makes sense. At most, I'm suggesting it's too much of a gamble on that to really be a good idea. But even then, there were some real big names that left Fox entirely because of Tucker, regardless of his overwhelming viewership.

So it's a question of how many will return vs how many will remain reluctant for reputation AND how many will leave on basis of not wanting to associate with the network (website in this case) that props up Tucker's bullshit.

It's certainly possible for it to pay off. I'm leaning toward the Tucker ad well has become Flint, Michigan. I guess we'll see if Tucker's pull can outweigh the insurmountable stupidity of Elon Musk.

How many advertisers truly stayed away from Tucker?  How many still are boycotting? Whatever advertisers left or stayed left it wasn’t enough to dump Tucker all that time. Idk how much of it had to do with his contract but no way Fox makes a contract that forces them to keep Tucker on despite costing share holders lots of $$. It’s their main responsibility after all, to make shareholders $$

I dunno. We had years of lost advertisers from him and I didn't see too many come back. It seems like a pretty big gamble with how many big ones he lost and with Twitter hemorrhaging them already.

Elon finally found someone to foist the day to day operations on.  Now he can go back to doing what he does best on Twitter, asking for stuff without knowing how it’s done and posting weird tweets.

Okay so get this.

Linda Yaccarino is pretty right wing. Follows a lot of the alt right loonies that Elon does.

But because she's connected to American corporate culture - she was the chair of the World Economic Forum - which means that the conspiracy nuts who follow Elon think she's a Illuminati globalist. They are now threatening to stop paying for their checkmarks if she stays on as CEO.

This is so fucking hilarious.

Good. Cancel those rented Boy Scout Anuses. What's he going to do for revenue then? Try to force everyone to watch Pucker's garbage via a pop-up that won't go away until you pay?

Newsflash, Adblocker works on twitter. It plays holy havoc with videos some days but stupid sponsored stuff gets the basket automatically.

Thanks, Elon. Thanks for your absolute horseshit ideas which companies will now follow suit.

Didn't care as much when this was just a way of saying “fuck you” to people who rightfully don’t wanna use Twitter.

But now I gotta hear about spam, and cutting costs...from fucking GOOGLE. And of course, more ramifications as to everything that gets wiped out.
