Moldova has started their process to join the EU.

This comes a day or so after reports leaked that Russia is going to invade Moldova if they can complete the takeover of the Donbas and Southern Ukraine.

Russia has been using Transnistria in propaganda for some time, claiming the Moldavians are oppressing them, despite essentially being left to their own means for decades. Spreading the fighting there would more likely spark a direct conflict with the EU and NATO just because of the fighting being right on Romania's doorstep as far as actual proximity to the border. Moldova has already tried to reunite with Romania once since they are basically Romanians too. If Russia starts bombing Moldova, it's hard to see Romania staying out of it.

The most annoying thing about all of this is that western governments (outside of Poland, Baltics and a few others) are preparing their people for any sort of sacrifice or readiness as it becomes more evident that this war is dangerously close to breaking out of Ukraine. Governments in liberal democracies seem very reluctant to tell their people that they'll have to go through some hard times, but it'll be worth it in the very end. If WWII happened today, it's hard to picture how current generations would not just roll over after a month of rationing and interruptions.

Russia to Halt Gas to Poland on Wednesday in Major Escalation

https://news.yahoo.com/russia-halted-gas-supplies-poland-152059894.html

Poland is refusing to pay for the gas in rubles, so Russia is going to turn off the gas.

What was interesting to me is it seems like Poland was already planning to not rely as much on Russian oil before this decision, but Bulgaria seems to be going "OH SHIT WAIT"

"What we are witnessing with Russian tanks is a design flaw," said Sam Bendett, an adviser with the Russian Studies Program at the Center for a New American Security.
"Any successful hit ... quickly ignites the ammo causing a massive explosion, and the turret is literally blown off."
The flaw means the tank's crew -- usually two men in the turret and a third driving -- are sitting ducks, said Nicholas Drummond, a defense industry analyst specializing in land warfare and a former British Army officer.

Wonder how many Russian soldiers would conveniently ditch their tanks if they knew about that?

Poor commie dolphins.

Russia has deployed trained military dolphins at its naval base in the Black Sea – possibly to protect its fleet from an underwater attack – according to new analysis of satellite images.

The US Naval Institute (USNI) reviewed satellite imagery of the naval base at Sevastopol harbor, and concluded that two dolphin pens were moved to the base in February at the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has a history of training dolphins for military purposes, using the aquatic mammal to retrieve objects or deter enemy divers.

Moldova is facing “a very dangerous new moment”, the country’s deputy prime minister has said, as he warned that unnamed forces were seeking to stoke tensions after a series of explosions in the breakaway region of Transnistria this week.

In a briefing with journalists, Nicu Popescu said his government had seen “a dangerous deterioration of the situation” in recent days, following grenade attacks on the “ministry of security” in the breakaway region of Transnistria on Monday. The attacks with rocket-propelled grenades represented “a very dangerous new moment in the history of our region”, he said, adding that Moldova’s institutions had been put on high alert in response.

Sounds like it's almost certain that Russia is going to make a move for eastern Moldova. That increases the chances of a direct attack on a NATO country, with Moldova essentially being Eastern Romania, which will lead to Romania giving more direct assistance to Moldova than we've seen delivered to Ukraine.

Something is wrong with Putin, like he knows his days on earth are numbered. It's like he's trying to recreate the Russian empire before time runs out, no matter if it's a suicide mission.

If you've seen how Russia operates its military historically, they don't have a problem treating their soldiers like cannon fodder. Whereas western military tradition does its best to curb losses, Russia just throws body upon body at the enemy. It may have worked in WWII, but in modern warfare, it's a strategy that makes them weaker faster.

There has been talk about his health, but nothing substantive.

It's all speculative. He could very well just realizing his mortality, which is about the same thing. It's hard to really know, but it doesn't seem like it's coming from someone who trusts his potential successors to fulfill his vision.

Most people don't "realize their mortality" by starting a psychotic and a potentially world war.  Desperation has to be coming from a more immediate cause.

Maybe not, but he seems to believe it's "now or never" and doesn't think anyone else can do it. Russia wasn't exactly "desperate," they were in a great position globally with their natural resources and their still powerful influence, plus Putin was more secure than he had ever been despite all the corruption that's weakened their military and the country's internal safety. There was no reason to launch the war aside from this whole recreation of the Russian empire that he's been vocal about for the last decade.

I think it most likely that he simply underestimated the response he was going to get by invading, and he got cornered.  He seized the Crimea only a few years ago with little resistance and only a marginal response from the West.  The amount of weapons pouring into the Ukraine have certainly changed the tide in a drastic way... enabling the undermanned Ukrainian forces to be more effective and to bolster public resistance.  It can't be overstated how the West's response to Russia's provocations were far more unified and resilient than anyone would have expected.

China’s ministry of foreign affairs has accused Nato of messing up Europe and stirring up conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region, after the UK’s foreign secretary told China it should “play by the rules”.

In a speech at Mansion House in London on Wednesday, Liz Truss renewed calls to boost Nato in the wake of the Ukraine war. Truss also delivered a direct warning to China. “Countries must play by the rules. And that includes China,” she said.

The last time I checked, it was the CCP that was stirring up potential conflicts in Asia-Pacific, particularly around the South China Sea. Like Putin, Xi has been pretty successful at making his country rather unpopular with its neighbors.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday endorsed the idea of combining two of the Democrats’ top legislative priorities — aid to Ukraine and new funding for COVID-19 relief — into one package next month, citing the urgency to move swiftly on both.

That strategy is being considered by Senate Democratic leaders, who see the popular Ukraine assistance as a could-be sweetener for the more controversial health care funding, which Republicans have threatened to block amid the partisan fight over President Biden’s pandemic policies at the Southern border.

Pelosi endorses strategy to combine Ukraine, COVID aid | The Hill

Well, Democrats are missing the strategy of "let the Republicans shoot themselves in the foot" and pointing a gun at their foot too by forcing something totally unrelated in a desperately-needed foreign aid bill.
