Why do people like Chipotle so much?

It's really just a Taco Bell with higher quality ingredients, imo.

You're not wrong, and I think that explains why I MUCH prefer Taco Bell.

Chipotle is pretty solid, though. There's one near my house, and it sucks a lot of business away from the Taco Bell a block down. And I love it, because there's NEVER a line at that Taco Bell.

I like Chipotle.  It's not nearly as greasy and over sauced as anything you get from Taco Bell.

I guess I mean service wise. For the same price, you can get better quality burritos and tacos at a Mexican restaurant, albeit without the convenience.

...and questionable sanitary practices...and the occasional "Let's screw with the gringo's food" attitude (may just have been a Chicago thing).

The only thing I think Chipotle does wrong is that I think the condiments (Salsa, sour cream, guac, cheese, lettuce) should go on the tortilla first, then the meat, beans & rice.

It would lead to the condiments not being lumped to one end in the burrito.

You're probably used to more of an Americanized Mexican cuisine.  Yeah, local restaurants are better, but they're closer to Chipotle than other national chains.

If theres a good one nearby. In santa barbara I'd go to the mexican grill down the street, but here in ohio I honestly think chipotle is better than all the mexican options near me. And it is absolutely better than taco bell by far.

People mistake cilantro as authentic Mexican flavor.

I have a lunch truck I visit...Tastes way better...And fuck what Tsar said about sanitary practices....I've been to some terrible Chipotles, and not a Latino in sight.

Yeah, I was about to say. I've been in the back of many restaurant kitchens, and Latinos tend to be cleaner workers.

it isn't the amount of cilantro that's the problem.

you just taste it differently.

I always thought that was weird. I love cilantro and can't imagine a soap flavor. I had Chipotle recently and the one thing I gotta say is the food is as clean as you want it to be. I think I just like how it's about 40 percent rice.

The first time I had Chipotle, there was so much cilantro on it (l think that I had a bowl) that it looked like a chopped salad. The second time, I asked for as little cilantro as humanly possible, and learned that it had nothing to do with quantity.  Then I read about the genetic connection, and there has been no third time.

Nah, I'm on your side....I love cilantro and they abuse the shit.

I build Mexican markets, and they're cleaner than the regular market chains with all Latino employees.

Hispanic owned and operated local chain, highly rated so we went in - everyone was in the back watching telenovelas, most the tables still hadn't been cleared & wiped down (approx 1 pm).  The floor was a mess.  The food was ok, but I've had better in little storefronts in Chicago neighborhoods.

If Cilantro tastes like soap to you, I wonder how you'd do with Lychee nuts (aka "soapberries").  My former Mgr (from India), her predecessor and our team went to a Chinese/Indian buffett place.  The former Mgr. talked up Lychee and how great they were.  Her predecessor tried one & said it was like chewing on a bar of soap (taste-wise).  Meanwhile, the former Mgr. is happily munching away on them.

That's not the norm for local establishments.

I've eaten at plenty of Mexican restaurants in the Chicago area and am as white as a ghost and don't know what you're talking about, maybe those 'gringos' were being shitheads?

Nope.  We were just walking around and decided to drop in a place about 3 blocks from our apt.  The guys behind the counter kept glaring at us.  It was a very weird vibe.

Maybe there was something else going on...like the "camera store" near another apt, that had about 25 rolls of 35mm and a couple cameras.  That place always had lots of sealed merchandise boxes going in the back of the place, but the front of the store was really spartan.

Ime, "gringos" aren't exactly aware of when they are being shitheads.

I was dumping on Chipotle earlier, but it is a “court of last resort” if there aren’t many options left or available. Where I used to live had a ton of great Mexican places, but where I’m at now only has one and that’s a sit-down establishment where you’d go more for pricey meals, drinks, and music.

For a casual or fast-casual taco or burrito, every other restaurant follows a monkeys paw ordeal. Your tacos will be great, but the side items are a Frankenstein or whatever ingredients had to be used by the end of the day. Or your tacos will be miserable, but they have flautas you could write home about. All of the food is bad, but they’re practically giving away tequila. Such are the foibles of living in an area where everyone is ancient.

We walked in, ordered and sat down, talking only to each other.  It was a couple hours before they closed, so it wasn't like walked in with minutes left in their day & demanded they fire up the grill.  The friend I was with worked as a waiter & a bartender, so he wouldn't act like a douche to anyone in a restaurant.  We weren't wearing clothes with controversial statements or anything that could be misconstrued as such.

Probably the same reason people think low-riders are apart of mexican culture.

I'll take your word for it....But it's a hard sell for me.
