My son asked for 3 things for his bday. Joycons, a laptop and an ant farm.  I couldn't remember the ant farm but I knew he'd bring whatever it was back up and I would remember.

Well I didn't and he just brought it back up. I can get the farm at Walmart but they don't have live ants.  Gonna shoot by pet smart but I'm not optimistic. A friend of mine said just find a hill and dig up a queen, but she's retarded.

Nothing I've ordered lately has overnight shipping so I might be fukt, but I got until Thursday.

He's been asking for an ant farm for a long time

He was too young for it until now....He would have literally set them free in my house a couple of years ago, but he's become far more respectful of his captive creatures and he's matured enough that observation is greater than megalomania.

They don't carry ants at PetSmart. Crickets, yes, ants, no.

(I'm going to check with my daughter just to make sure.)

And that's a verified no.

I'm surprised he still really wants one. I mean I have fish but still idg how watching ants seems interesting, like I already see them all the time being ants, you almost might as well keep flies... Then again, that shrunken people sidearc from Solar Opposites does give the concept some renewed appeal to me.

Sometimes I go outside and flip things over and find a bunch of ant eggs and various kinds of ants, I harvest the eggs to feed to my fish by using a Tupperware part full with water to make a bunch of crawling ants easier to separate and deal with. If you already have the setup, it seems like it might be possible to go out and collect a bunch of ants and eggs and populate the farm and let them figure it out, let a new queen emerge. Then again if they all just died quickly that might be hard to clean out and would be pretty upsetting. Also might be upsetting in general for him to watch these bewildered wild ants scramble to adjust to life in a suitcase with only a random fraction of their colony's population, no clear queen...

No place that I know sells live ants, or at least the type of live ants that would live long enough to do the ant farm thing. Those are always shipped to you once you've bought the farm at a hobby store.

But, do you have sugar ants in the area? I used to make mini ant farms in baby food jars by carefully digging up a sugar ant hill. I'd keep them for maybe a week or two watching them build their tunnels everywhere, feeding them grains of sugar and then pour them back out where I got them. Rinse jar, repeat at a new hill.

You probably won't get them by Thursday but at least now you know where you can

Also if you bought him the farm already check the back of the box it's in, they usually mention whether or not they come with a voucher you mail in to get the ants

Well fuck....Apparently there is a joycon shortage.  Been to every store in town and they all say "those are hard to find now"

For what conceivable reason?  I have never encountered a situation where controllers for a several year old system would be difficult to find.  I even tried the used place, but I'm glad they didn't have them, because I would have bought them out of impulse and I don't wanna give him used joycons.

Guess I'll check a few stores in TX because wtf.

Store in Gainesville had 1 set left....Blue and yellow.  They don't match his Switch at all but he was happy they were mismatched like that.

I know a really good sushi place you ever wanna visit.

Or we could just get some trashy buffet food.

Depends on how cavalier you are towards the prospect of eating parasites.

There has been a major switch shortage since the beginning of the pandemic because enterprising douchebags felt the need to use bots to buy up the console.

Basically the people who got shamed for buying up and reselling PPE and sanitizer at the onset just switched tactics.

Hmmmmm. I was always scared that things would get turned over and ants would be everywhere. Those bastards are relentless.

I figure he's old enough now and every year, these fuckers raid my house before winter looking for water because I'm 100% sure they built this community on top of a large ant colony.

They mind their business until fall.

That does sound like a pickle but the internet might be your best friend on this. Not sure how it works with ants but spiders are surprisingly shippable and easy to get on a dime.
