SwimModSponges
1. All religions are cults, all cults are religions. Same thing, different word. 2. You should 100% do it. I've been kicking this idea around as well, made a post about it a couple days back. The long and short of it is, religions are all made of lies; but they're the lies that come with some incredible benefits. There's the community organizing and pro-social aspects of it, prayer/meditation relaxes the body, it slows the heart rate, releases endorphins... The belief in a higher power can be extremely comforting, and the idea of some form of life after death (although 100% false) sounds really fun. And inspiration! Religions have inspired some of the most impressive feats of humanity; stonehenge, the pyramids of egypt, that giant face on mars... I feel like it would be legitimately good for me to become religious. But what would I worship? Definitely not Yaweh/Allah/Jehova/God. That motherfucker's nutty. I mean, there's some good general shit mixed in with the abrahamic religions, there like "love thy neighbor" and shit about chicks lusting after dudes with donkey cocks blowing horse sized loads(Ezekiel 23:20)*. but I mean that's all just common sense stuff, you don't need religion to tell you not to kill people unless they're babylonian, in which case you should seize their infants and dash them upon the rocks. Duh. Then you got the mountains of reasons why any of those religions would suck just in general ranging from their treatment of women to their stranglehold on the societies they inhabit. Eastern religions are out for similar reasons, plus the fact that "becoming a Buddhist" as a white person is just so tacky. Nothing against actual buddhist people, but white people who become buddhist... I don't want to do that. You have about the same thing with extinct religions. If you start worshiping Thor... well they'll think you've watched too many marvel movies. @Dr.Girlfriend does really like the egyptian gods though. Oh hey, maybe I should just build a golden calf and start worshipping it, that'd be a hoot. What is worth worshiping? What's the most powerful thing? Well there's the sun, or maybe the earth/nature... but that just sounds incredibly hippy. How about myself? I am the only existence I can ever fully experience; the only being in all the universe which I myself am. I am the instrument by which I can alter the fabric of the world around me. Now that's essentially satanism right there. Good stuff, but during meditations on the subject I had a revelation that free will is an illusion caused by our inability to fully process a 4D reality.** Hey, how about the fourth dimension? Time is arguably the most powerful thing one can experience. It is inescapable, it is constant, it controls your destiny. God of Time? I like that. Now, where to find a god of time... ... Akatosh, the dragon god of time from the elder scrolls? Yes. Gonna get me an alter, maybe sacrifice a goat or something? Also yes. *"horse sized load" means a load comparable to a horse's load, not a load the size of a horse. ** I've actually recently had another revelation on the subject; there are two worlds. The first world is the world of your perception. This is the world in which you are god. This is the world where magic works as long as you didn't see how the magician did it. In Plato's allegory of the cave (the philosophy I was testing mine against when I had this revelation), this world would be the shadows on the wall you believed to be reality. If you're just a brain in a vat, this is your dream. The other world is concrete reality. There is an exact number of grains of sand on all the earth. Every single one; from beaches to gravel pits to deserts to ocean floor to carpeting etc etc. You or I will never know it, but that number does in fact exist. The same can be said for almost every facet of reality. This world exists regardless of our perception of it or lack thereof. Dr. MrsGirlfriend
I do like the Egyptian gods, but also the Norse and Celtic as well. Sponges forgets that prior to becoming an accountant I majored in history and religious studies. Sadly, not much of a job market for museum work.
