I hate summer

I have no AC, had central air, but it died a few years ago, and the outlets in my house are old and cant support a window unit.

I have my bedroom full of fans and open windows and I've tried every combination of fans in multiple locations, facing all directions, trying to get some kind of air flow, but my bedroom is still unbearable.

its impossible to sleep and any cold drink I have in my room is hot as soup in 10 minutes.

For sleeping, have you tried placing the fan right next to your head and pointing it directly at your head? Not your body, just your head. This worked wonders for me when I didn't have central air. To be fair though, where I lived at the time didn't get too hot compared to a lot of other places. But During the height of summer I would always have the comforter and sheet on me and I never got too hot to sleep.

I lived for 2 years at an apartment without central air, just a wall unit in the living room and the way the apartment was laid out none of that cold air had any chance of actually getting to the bedrooms. We had a portable unit for the room our computers were in so we didn't die but there wasn't really space to put it in the bedroom we slept in so on really hot days we'd have to take the mattress out to the living room.

I live in a house with central air now but I still stand by hating summer. We just moved in at the start of June and I'm afraid to see what our electric bill is gonna be like. It's an older house and the AC isn't the most efficient. I never set it below 74 and it seems like it still has to run a lot just to keep it at that temperature.

Try building a couple of these for your bedroom

i'll have to get the stuff to try this tomorrow, but i'll have to get a couple small fans like those, cuz all the fans I have in my house are large box fans or tower fans

I built a couple for camping and they work pretty well.

Pro tip, have one blow directly into the covers of your bed

Do any of your box fans have a handle on them?  If so attach a fitted sheet to the handle and sleep under/inside the air bubble the fan creates with the sheet.  You'll see.

i have central air but it's so goddamn expensive

How much is ur electric bill usually in the summer. I'm terrified to see what mine is gonna be. At my last apartment I had the equal payment plan thing so I only paid $44 a month every single month but during the summer the actual bill was usually like $70-80. I looked to see what the equal payment plan number would be for my current house and it said $176 I'm hoping that's not what it will be for me. Like I'm guessing that's based on historical data at this address so maybe the last people that lived here were a family of 4 that kept the A/C at 72 or something that made the bill be way higher than it would be for me.

so i'd like to sign in to my account and tell you but it keeps bouncing me out telling me to use the profile i used to configure paperless statements....but i don't GET paperless statements. bunch of fucking code monkeys who can't fucking code an if then else statement

anyway i'm pretty sure it ranges in the 70s during the summer but don't hold me to that number because i'm pretty sure it's not right. i can tell you after i call them tomorrow and tell them that their devs are bad and they should feel bad

Why are you not using paperless it's 2019, grandpa.

Anyway that makes me feel a little less worried. I'm hoping my bill will be like, $100 at the most. The central air and dryer are the only things that are really different compared to when we were at the apartment and we only do like, maybe 10 loads of laundry a month at most. And I usually keep the AC at 76-78, never lower than 74.

ok i pulled up my credit card statements instead so i can give you real numbers now

last month was 65, before that was 50, and last year in august it was 80. so i'd say that it ranges anywhere in from 50 in the spring to 70ish or 80ish in the summer. but i also keep my temperature at 76 if i'm not home or 74 if i am home

That's not bad. I keep my AC even higher than that usually. It's an old house though so it has to work hard to even get to that point.

also to answer your question as to why i have paper statements. it's because i have 5 active email addresses i HAVE to check every day (almost every day for my business one). all of them are tied to different things and i can't change what some of these are tied to without creating new accounts...but i can't do that for everything because some of the accounts are tied to my address and only one per address is allowed. it's hard to cross reference those between email addresses to figure out what's been paid and what hasn't.

because of that, i try to get bills by paper, i check that they get paid through autopay on the day that they are supposed to, and then i physically shred them to know not to worry about it. i've had cases before where autopay has failed when i was still moving around and had to run to a bill pay center to cut a check so i wouldn't get a late fee. it would have been a lot harder to remember which email the bill was under to pull up the account number to pay it rather than just bring the bill in

Thermostat outside my room read 91 a few weeks back here. Thankfully that heat wave only lasted a couple days. I've only got one dinky little fan. Mostly survived with the help of a good ice pack.

When it's that bad, I'm not even sure how well those evaporative/swamp coolers would help, or if they'd just add to the humidity and make things more miserable.

I know a guy who can fix A/C and update electrical...

But he loves summer XD

I tried this, made it air tight and put a powerful little fan on it, but the air coming out of it wasn't very cold and all the ice water bottles and ice packs were completely melted and room temp within half an hour

If you have an old house, does it have those center of the ceiling covers or a light?  You could replace those with a ceiling fan.  They're not that hard to install.  My place has the old cloth covered wire with that tarlike substance between the cloth and the wire & I've put ceiling fans in 3 rooms so far without issue.  Helped quite a bit when our ac burned up & furnace evaporator coil cracked.

That's unfortunate, I'm sorry

I personally had success with them
