lol at woods and sorbo,

and yes the program is designed for non violent offenders to do their time at the facility, while learning how to be a firefighter. the one successful program we have here for inmates it is only 2-3 a cycle = 6month - 1 year. depends.

The program in California only excludes sex offenders, arsonists and anyone with more than 8 years left on their sentences

The inmates aren’t forced but to get paid $26.90 for 24 hours fighting a California wildfire doesn’t seem right to me. By all means do the program but don’t pay them, what could be about $1 an hour. If paying them a firefighter wage is too offensive than at least pay min wage.

I tend to agree.  I think that $26.90 is probably the legally established scale for prison jobs.

Inmates take the job because it pays way more than any other job. It’s slave labor. if they work less than 24 hours I think they make $10 for their time. It should not be legal to pay someone a pittance for what people normally get paid good money to do.

Have a friend whos house is on the edge of one of the fires, he left to go stay with his parents. Have family not far from the Palisade fire who are keeping an eye on things. They are probably safe unless it takes just an insane run.

We had a fire very similar to the Palisade fire out here a few years ago. Winds 100+ MPH caused a firestorm. When that happens, there is literally nothing to do but run. You cant fight fire in those conditions. You can just run and Pray. If the smoke is flat on the ground and moving fast, you need to be moving faster to GTFO.

Exactly.  I think most people associate high winds with local weather systems where there is also high humidity, like tornadoes / thunderstorms and hurricanes, but winds are also frequently the result of larger low pressure systems passing by heat domes where the humidity is low.  Hurricane force winds in sub 20% humidity will almost guarantee that there will be a firestorm.  At those speeds, the ignition doesn't have to be arson or a downed power line; it could be just about anything that's dislodged by the winds creating a spark in dry brush.

The Palisade fire isn't far from another of my usual haunts, Santa Monica.  The area that caught fire is against coastal hills at the foot of the Santa Monica mountain range, but it's a densely populated area.  The idea that a wildfire is a product of something that only happens along the border of an undeveloped area is absolutely false.  It can and will appear in suburban sprawl, and the challenges of it occurring in an urban setting can lead to even more catastrophic results.  Fortunately, the death toll for this event is less than 20 at this point, even though over 7,000 structures have been lost.

A cigarette butt is enough to take down tens of thousands of acres. People truly do not understand just how tinder dry places are, and how quickly a fire can explode if conditions are right.

Have you heard of the Watch Duty app? Cannot recommend it enough for people who live in the West.

Just found out today that the daughter of the co-manager has had to evacuate twice in less than 3 days. First she had to run from her house to a friends that was supposed to be in a safe area, then they had to run from the friend's place. The only good thing out of all this so far is that her friend is out of state right now so when the daughter and her roommate had to evacuate from the 'safe' place, they were able to rescue the friend's cats and take them all with to a hotel in Anaheim. At least her friend only has to worry about her stuff but not her furbabies.

The death toll has risen to 16 ☹️

https://nypost.com/2025/01/09/us-news/la-fires-live-updates-01-09-25/?utm_campaign=iphone_nyp&utm_source=pasteboard_app

the nyp had a piece saying the mayor of LA turned down help from the NYPD. I guess firefighters were going to go out there and help? I didn’t read the story cuz it sounded not true, and if it were, the nyp certainly wouldn’t honestly say why the help was declined

I'm not sure what the NYFD would be able to do once they were able to get out here.  Other than that, I love how blatantly partisan the NYP is.

They would be extra bodies to fight the fires. Swap out with fire fighters that have been working days straight. The NYP is an awful news source

Oh, I get that.  At the very least, it would be a goodwill payback for the LAFD coming out to help after 9-11.  Fwiw, I highly doubt the LAFD would turn them down, but they're more likely to need equipment with those bodies.

Climate change is bullshit. Quit voting for dipshits like Newsom and Bass. Actions have consequences.

you don’t deserve any sympathy for me. Not anymore. If you’re going to call people like me names for trying to tell you how to properly maintain your force, you get bullshit like this. So suffer the consequences.

If you don’t like it, too fucking bad. Fuck you.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas) which produces heat-trapping gases.

i mean, the science is there. stop acting like since your birth, the continents stopped shifting, and the earth stopped earthing. we are naive to think mother earth won't bite back.

Just because you're sweaty no matter the temperature doesn't mean climate change doesn't exist.

Did that make you feel better?  To talk out your ass for no reason?  Were you able to carry on with your day with confidence and vigor for having said all this?  Withholding your sympathy make you feel like a real man?

SO this is where you were hiding, you slime bag.  Maybe you should fly out so you can creep on rescue some vulnerable girls.
