I'm thinking about spending a couple hundred bucks to put out some banner ads for this place.

In doing so, I can target things like age ranges, hobbies, geographical locations, etc.

What do you guys think we should target in terms of people that would actually like this place?

Ideally I'd try to get people already interested in adult swim and toonami as a priority, but otherwise?

age range...hobbies.. idk man. I would gear it towards people interested in writing and multimedia arts etc maybe kind of like what it seemed like Admin was going for maybe.

i was about to say creative arts as well. writing, graphic design, various crafting ... just original content in general.

THIS.

Also, I don't think it's too bad an idea. I would also look into the "Shitposting X things" groups that are centered around Adult Swim things. That's not a bad start to look into. I would also possibly not make them too invasive. Growing members....is double-edged. I don't envy your advertising endeavor.

OH!!!! YES! And more interaction with the gamers, too! I wish I could orchestrate a UEMB Smash night once in a while or maybe even a League/DOTA team.

That would be cool to be able to do more. I was going to try to do more with the shared interest in ssb, but life got in the way.

Closest we have to a regular game thing right now is "Friday night Jackbox with Ramo".

So I think maybe we can divide the boards into a few categories to focus on:

- toonami/[as] folks

- creative artists

- discord/gaming

- general discussion/shitposting

We do have the discord group already and there are things we do on occasion, so that's definitely a good primary area to focus on.

If you guys want to integrate the Discord community here I can help with that most likely let me know. I need to do some work on the Discord bots anyways, I'm not satisfied with what is there. I've not restricted anyone from joining either beyond violating the same rules KN laid out here. I would add that the Discord community already has at least a small handful of members that aren't originally from here so there may be something to your assertion.

Not to be a naysayer, but I wouldn't do any of this.

I think people really sell the potential of this place short some times. I might agree with the general attitude about some of the community here currently though. That doesn't mean the content and presentation is bad though.

exactly. if we would just break out the industrial-strength cleaner once or twice, this place would clean up and be all presentable.

I hear you both, but the vitriolic nature of many a thread/user is not something you'd want on the vanguard here. I'm certainly a part of that problem, myself, but you really would need to seriously change things around here lest you invite new members that would just do the same or leave because of it.

so we up the post count for df to, say, 1000 and moderate the open forums a little harder. problem solved. by time someone has posted enough to see the "real" us, they're already somewhat invested.

Maybe even a bit higher on that post requirement. I don't know, I certainly don't have all the answers. It can be fun here, but sometimes things get way too personal and out of hand, even if you moderated the normal folders.

What are you talking about specifically in terms of vitriolic nature? For the most part, I think this place's rules are pretty fair, but then again I'm in favour of online spaces with the fewest necessary rules to ensure safety and prevent liability. I think this place offers a wide range of people with varying interests, most of which is rather benign. There are really only a small group of people here I would consider extreme, but then again they mostly keep within their own circle so I don't really see an issue with that.

We all make mistakes sometimes, I sure know I have.

I've been talking with some of the Discord users about organizing a DnD night. Originally I made the discord to try to get more engagement out of the anime community but it hasn't panned out very well thus far. I wanted to do organized viewings of anime to make our own "anime block". We had some of those but I couldn't get enough interest participation to make it work out.

i don't think any mods will argue that the moderation has been lax. i hesitate to call it "lazy" because they're here and they're doing regular work. but i think it's safe to say that the mods are not as strict as their position allows them to be. that can always be tightened up, if the need arises. and, while i don't venture out of noise for the most part so my opinion may not be accurate, it seems like everything non-noise is mostly spared from the occasional nastiness. it's those places where new users will gravitate anyways. noise/off topic is always where the old-schoolers of any boards tend to hang. it's a shitshow wherever you go, not just here.

I think it’s a matter of “how lax should we be” vs. a few people going “how far can we push them” but I’ll probably get grief over that. Either way, it does need some re-thinking done. The big “lax” thing we do is continuing to allow permabanned users who do nothing but start drama back.  Remove the toxicity so new users aren’t put off.

and honestly, I can go back to not engaging in it. The issue here is that it kind of started because I got sucked into it because I was, well, moderating.

There are always going to be people in a community this size causing issues, moderators wouldn't be a thing in online communities if they weren't. I think you should stop second guessing yourself because you can't satisfy everyone. What some might consider lax, others might consider fair and offering chances for people to change or at least temper their behaviour to acceptable norms.
