Okay. 3 things here:

1. You’re paying more because the way the tax code changed for all brackets is based on gross income, regardless of deductions, last time I looked at it. That went up for pretty much everyone, minus the top of the top. That’s why you have higher taxable income, even making less.

2. Don’t you have an accountant or someone on retainer to do this shit, for the company? Man, you’re not auditing/adulting right. :P If you can’t afford that, I get that. No big on that one, it’s just helpful. Also, how can you not write off some things like parts, mileage, and bills? You CAN write off certain bills on your taxes as expenditures for your LLC, as they are also used for your LLC use. One example being your cell phone. Another one being Internet, which (I’m assuming a lot here) is being used mostly for business use, and not us, Netflix, or your masturbation habit? Purchased a car? Yep. New house? Yep. Printers? Paper clips? Wireless router? All of those go towards your deductions for your LLC use.

3. You need to keep your receipts and file them, man. Speaking as someone who has worked for himself previously (and corporate America for a while), keep that kind of stuff. It’s helpful come this time of year. File them under monthly tabs. I’d rather see you and your LLC move forward and upward. Getting screwed (tax-wise) simply because of bad bookkeeping is dumb, and you’re smarter than that. I would do the same with your marriage things, too. You guys can file together, but there is a way for you to get more, even while filing together, especially in the instance of mass debt from student loans.  For the most part, though you’re in good shape, just adult a little more for your business, and you’ll be fine.

Also meals, company functions, depreciation of vehicle, home office space, tolls and bridges fees, parking, business attire, all of these things can also be claimed as deductions. I believe when filling out a schedule c is the amount of starting inventory and closing inventory. Those numbers can be tweaked tremendously, as there is really no way of proving or disproving what someone actually had at that point in the past. The IRS isn't going to focus on those numbers too much. Those numbers, along with the business income, which will garner you a profit or loss, will have a major impact on what you owe, or get back.

I'm sorry, where did I imply I did any bad bookkeeping?

Also, married couples can't file together unless they were married the fiscal year for which the taxes are being filed.

I don't need you to explain my taxes to me, my accountant does that, and she does it well.

For someone who's completely ignorant of the myriad changes to 2019 tax law you probably shouldn't be trying to give advice, or inventing scenarios that you imagine happened to me.

This is pretty much the stupidest thing anyone's said in this thread. Like how did you imagine an entire thing that didn't happen, assume I don't know how my own business finances work, give bad advice on it, then try to talk down about it? I can't even imagine what kind of blow to the head you took to be able to do that sincerely.

Like, I know you love to give unsolicited advice about things you don't actually understand and pretend you do, but this is beyond asshole level even for you man.

You know, bad bookkeeping was a bad Sexist joke, so sorry for that.

Okay, I’m sorry for trying to be a decent human being to you and giving my opinion and two cents to help.

I is so sorry, massa, my poor, dumb, black ass will never, ever offer any help to you again. I guess was dropped on my head at birth to want to be a decent person to you, the almighty white man. I’ll go back to my cotton field and ghetto now. I so sorry for interfering in something I shouldn’t have, massa.

I might do this. I need an account thats not so easy for me to use. My do it and mail the debit card to my brother.

You should - everybody should if they're getting .01%.  I just got my first month's interest - it's just over 83 times more than I would have gotten at my former brick & mortar "big name" bank.

nah. kn has made it clear over the years that he knows a great deal about (his) finances. that entire post was out of line.

how about this: if someone strolls into your mentions, telling you, the (professional?) writer, that you need to go back and study high school grammar with the attitude lupin brought, you're telling me you won't take a giant shit on them? lupin rattled the wrong cage with his tax "advice" and kn served him in kind.

anyways, the reason i came to this thread this morning:

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/28/tax-refunds-are-ticking-up-with-the-average-check-now-more-than-3000.html

Quote

The average check is now $3,143 for the week ended Feb. 22, according to the IRS. That’s just about on par with last year’s figures, reflecting a rise of 1.3 percent year over year.

The increase in refund amounts is a change from the recent downward trend of smaller checks.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday that refunds were rising. “Tax refunds are up 17 percent week over week,” he said. That basically gets us to the same level as last year.”

Very few people here keep track of other posters' financial data/experience. And even if someone was that condescending(Lupin wasn't. Folks are always giving tax advice during this time of the year), I'm not going off on them because that person wouldn't be worth my time. People say a lot of dumb shit to writers, and going off on them for every little thing would make fans afraid to talk to me.

@wacky1980 For once, I wasn’t being condescending. I normally AM, I get that, but since it was K_N, I wanted to give my 2 cents. If it came off as condescending due to the first part of the post, then it wasn’t read all the way through. Also, if it did, I did not mean it here. Normally, when I respond to him, I drop the condescension, indifference, and schtick, to simply be human, because he warrants it. I understand that he knows his finances better than I do, and I did apologize for joking about it, but the hostility was not warranted, in my view. If I came off as hostile, that wasn’t the intention. Looking back at it, I don’t see my tone as hostile or condescending throughout. At the same time, if he didn’t want the advice, a simple “thanks, but I got it” would’ve sufficed. If he responded in kind, then I missed the joke.

(I’m assuming that is the point you’re getting across to me)

Nah, KN is the Pomposaurus and he is all knowing.  How dare any of you plebes question his grand financial wisdom on a message board he requires donations for to keep his server rolling for what I can only assume is for way more than this shitty board.

Seriously, dude has impulse issues and I'm sure one day he'll just take his ball and go home if he gets tired of this place.

actually, now that you and lupin have each mentioned it, he was being condescending...

meh, whatever. i was halfway through typing out a response when the power went out a few hours ago. now that i'm back online, i don't really care. defend shitty behavior if you want.

Theyre saying scammers are extremely sophisticated this year. Be careful guys!

The irs will never:

1. Call or email you about a balance

2. Demand payment upon immediate arrest

3. Ask for gift cards and prepaid cards as payment

I know how silly all this is but people are falling for it. YOUNG PEOPLE, TOO!

Also these scammers will have ACCURATE irs balances and other correct info about you!

Your dumbfuck ass can chill out too. Saying not to throw a hissy fit over basic human behavior that's currently going on in any topic about taxes right now isn't defending people acting shitty. People give out unwanted car advice, unwanted college advice, unwanted cooking advice, etc. There's no reason to bite off someone's head if they're not being a dick about it. The fact that you do think it's okay just adds to the many reasons why you're a Trump voting dipshit. If KN had come back to say he's good and Lupin continued to try to give him tax advice, then it would have been totally okay to tell him to shut the fuck up. That's how basic human interaction works, which is obviously too hard of a concept for you to understand.

This.

Not only this but lupin and I have known eachother for a long time and he makes these kind of comments often (usually on facebook). I usually ignore them but this one pissed me off too much and struck a nerve.

Well to be honest I could tell you the grass was orange and you’d flip your shit...

youve made it clear that you genuinely hate a decent number of us. And if you dislike what Lb has to say both here and on Facebook...well then isn’t that on you?

If you didn’t want feed back then maaaaaybe don’t post? (Regardless of it being your forum, I’m not scared of you or your viper tantrums)

and let’s add, he apologized understanding that to you..in whatever textual tone you read that in...that YOU took it wrong...

Lupin did come off as very condescending ("You're not adulting right",  Getting screwed (tax-wise) simply because of bad bookkeeping is dumb," just in general claiming KN didn't know what the fuck he was doing).

And then of course when KN laid into him, lupin played the race card like he was fuggs, but laid it on infinitely thicker than fuggs ever has.

I don't think Lupin intended to be condescending, but what he called "adulting" (fucking hate that term) wasn't adulting.  Nonetheless, snapping at someone who isn't expecting it isn't a good look, even if the advice is unsolicited. Best just to say "I got my business in order,  thanks."

This.

No, I didn’t intend to be condescending. If it came off that way, that wasn’t my intention. As I said above, I wasn’t intentionally being condescending, and was responding as a person giving advice to someone I consider another worthy human or friendly person.

I even apologized for making a couple of bad quips. I wasn’t expecting a hostile answer, but got one. Responding the way I responded after (“I sorry, massa”, etc.), isn’t playing Race Card more so than how it felt to get what I got from him. Felt like a slave being punished for speaking about cotton to his master. All he had to say was “Hey, I got this, I know how my finances work, because my accountant handles them. I’m good.” or the like, and it would’ve gone over better. Instead, well, we know what happened. Just basic human interaction. Unsolicited or not, a simple “No, thanks” or “I’m good” always works with me.

(Edit: I also hate the fucking term “adulting,” which is why the smiley was in the response.)

so anyways, bump because i said i'd update.

my tax return went down about $500 from last year, but not because of trump tax reform or a large change in personal income. it was because i had to set up a couple things at the bar on depreciation instead of expensing them like i thought i'd be doing. it increased our '18 reported profit by about $12k, and since we're an S-corp, i had to claim that additional profit on my personal return. had that not been the case, return would have been higher than last year by over $1k.

i also disagreed with the accountant, that the construction expenses (for the hop garden) couldn't be set up for a shorter depreciation schedule than the standard 39 years. we'll never recover all of that. but she's the pro and i'm just some guy with no formal accounting education, so whatever.

i really don't know how. our personal income came up maybe 3% in 2018, and our returns (before adding in the corp) were maybe about 3% lower in '18 vs '17. we're talking just a couple hundred bucks difference in the size of the return, and if taking into account the corp taxes, our return would have gone up if it reported the same income in '18 that it did in '17. oh well, i guess the best metric on which to judge the tax reform is not whether middle-income earners saw a change, but if the top earners did. i don't have that info in front of me right now, but maybe i'll go look for it later.

That's not the best metric in the least. If top earners earn more, that means that things failed. It should affect everyone close to equally. It didn't. Disproportionately, the top .5% earned a LOT more than the bottom 99.5%. By a LARGE margin.

That is NOT a measure of tax reform. A better measure is better, smarter spending, balanced budget, and less tax burden for 75% of America.

so you misunderstood what i said, but you kinda filled my stated knowledge gap in the process. now i don't have to go looking for the statistics. and at the same time, you managed to reinforce my statement that a better metric for judging the success of the tax reform would be a look at the change for top earners, rather than middle-income earners. thanks for that. you can go home now.
