my coworker makes fun of me for not liking marvel movies

i tried so hard to like these movies. everyone else does, i really want to like them. i just don't. i can't really explain why, but i can't connect at all with them. i tried watching both Guardians movies and Black Panther as a challenge from a coworker to try and see if i could find one i would finally like and i just don't. the humor falls flat, the CGI is hokey, the characters feel like cardboard. the soundtrack to Guardians i'll admit was very good, and the first half of Black Panther with the car chase was really fun, but after that the movie just dragged for me. i kept looking at my phone wondering when it was going to be over.

Those movies aren't good especially the Guardians, most people who don't have any connection to the comics and source material go see them only out of sheer consumerist compulsion, all the ads and money and obscenely outsized attention they get from seemingly everyone, it's just LCD hysteria.Ā

You said what I wanted to say, basically.

I've seen Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Civil War. Eventually they all start to run together.

Ā

I mean, they're entertaining, but I don't feel the need to feed the Disney beast any more than I already have.

Ā

I may watch Infinity War in a few months if I ask my friend to put it on while we're drinking.

God and you didn't even get into all the SEQUELS of Iron Man, The Avengers, etc.

My interest in these movies fizzled out pretty quickly a long time ago. But one of the Avengers movies did inspire me to make a meme:

Spoiler

I don't know if you know who the guy in the first one is, but he's Joey DeMaio, bassist of Manowar.

not really

Meshuggah's first album was pretty much Metallica worship except a bit more technical

Ā

New Millennium Cyanide Christ, which was from their third album, really differentiated them from the thrash-influenced bands of their time.

You can hear the thrash influence but they turned everything up to eleven. Because eleven is louder than ten.

I know you're really more a Pentagram, Candlemass, Black Sabbath guy but New Millennium Cyanide Christ is one of their best songs, and the video is kind of funny.

Ā

If my memory is correct, they were all extremely drunk and riding to the next gig on their tour bus when that was recorded.

I listened to like 30 seconds of it.Ā

I have an opinion about metal guitar playing that I don't know that many will share...

Slow, doomy shit: Downtuning is great.

Faster, thrashy shit: Standard E is best.

That's a huge reason I don't like much "modern" metal. They're tuning really low for the fast thrashy shit, that to me sounds like it should be in Standard E. The lower tunings just don't have the same "punch" with this kind of music, in my opinion. So many people who play or listen to metal automatically associate lower tunings with being heavier, but I don't necessarily see it that way.

I don't know any music theory but I always liked Meshuggah's guitar tone. On Chaosphere, the album that New Millenium Cyanide Christ appears, it sounds really fucking heavy. I know you play in a band so I won't pretend to be amateur music theorist, but to me it depends on the song and the band's catalog. It works for Meshuggah because of their style. They only started using 8-strings later in their career.

Ā

Iommi got the most out of his tuning, as did a lot of other great guitarists. I think it comes down the the skill of the musicians and their ability to discern what works best for their style. I hate "metalcore" bands that think breakdowns are heavy simply because it's a breakdown.

If you can get through it, here's what I think a breakdown should sound like. Converge are one of the most technically proficient metal bands in the scene today, and Kurt Ballou has an excellent ear for what tuning and arrangement should be. It'll be at the 0:57 mark or so. They also wear their punk influence on their sleeve, so listener beware.

btw it took me like five minutes to write this

You are definitely right in that it depends on the song, I don't know how much it depends on the band though. For my doom metal, I tune to C Standard, but by no means are all our songs in the key of C, ridingĀ the openĀ low string. I use that tuning because C is as low as I want to go (I've tried B, and I thought it sounded awful), and I can still play in higher keys if I wish, just playing in different positions rather than the open position. I do this because different riffs and different songs sound better in different keys. In some songs, C might sound best, in other songs, E flat might sound best. Etc.Ā One thing I've noticed about me personally though, is I tend to prefer faster metal in higher tunings, such as Standard E (Again, it's really the key rather than the tuning, but no one's going to play thrash metal or power metal in the key of E if they're not tuned to E). I have not found one single key that I prefer for doom metal though. I use a pretty wide range of keys myself.

As for the song you posted, the breakdown was my favorite part. >_>

Converge do make some sick breakdowns.

If you're ever going to be in the Dallas area doing a show, please let me know. I'll come see you play.

Will do. But it will probably be quite a while before we leave California. We literally just booked our first gig tonight. The date is June 23, but it's in Cali.

If you follow us on facebook, you should be kept abreast of anytime we play in the Dallas area (or anywhere, really): https://www.facebook.com/badcannon

I just don't like movies in general, though I've suffered through a lot of them......2 Hours is way to long to pay for what is essentially ocular torture.....Even though we do it daily, I'm pretty sure you shouldn't stare at any screen for 2+ hours.Ā  My attention span is shit and I usually have to "watch" a movie 3-4 times to see all of it because fuck just sitting there.

Iā€™m not a fan of marvel in general....I mean Iā€™ve seen the Deadpool movies...and the new Spider-Man one...and to be fair the only reason I saw those was 1) Deadpool is basically action/comedy and 2) Spider-Man has Michael Keaton in it....and I loves me some Michael Keaton....

marvel comics themselves, more or less disgust me....they rip off a fair amount of DC heroā€™s....so Iā€™m strictly DC....but I donā€™t go off of movies to tell me somethingā€™s good...just cause itā€™s ā€œmainstreamā€ doesnā€™t mean people know shit....DCs books are better, their animated shows are better...and instead of getting a director that actually is a fan and KNOWS what will fly and wonā€™t....DCs movies will continue to be garbage...

I just like Superheros in general. So what, its not comic accurate, these movies are for a more mainstream audience beyond comic book readers. I like Marvel and DC, but I like the Marvel movies better because they're not as dark and broody as the new DC movies. I just think its all in good fun. If you dont like them, you dont like them. I refuse to go to a movie theater for a romantic comedy or a biography ... but thats just me so ... ehh.Ā

Then that's on your co-worker. If you don't like them, then you don't like them. Trying to force yourself to like Marvel movies is pointless. This is from someone who will probably never get tired of superhero moviesĀ because I've loved this corny shit since I was like five.Ā

This and the fact that he just knowingly let a coworker throw him under the bus in an email makes me think that he's trying too hard to be the nice guy.....Nice guys finish last.

I say feed it more. I envision a future Kingdom Hearts game with severe canon rape.

Thor Ragnarok was the one exception I made, because Taika Waititi is one of my favorite directors, but other than that I'm terrifically bored with the saturated market.

For me, its a matter of me realizing "it's good, but good in the same way as the others." So I don't usually reap a new experience from new installments.

Marvel movies are a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed GotG1, Deadpool, Spiderman Homecoming, and Black Panther, but they've been starting to feel generic for a while.Ā

It's niceĀ when they experiment with different directors, but for a while, most of them follow the standard formula of "villain comes in, hero is challenged, he loses at first but then comes back in the finale to murder the villain, one liners are peppered in, wash rinse repeat".

It might be better than the garbage DC pumps out, but it does feel like Marvel'sĀ experimentation feels like a rarity compared to mass produced cookie cutter productions like their sequel films (haven't seen Ragnarok, but that looks like an exception). It's not bad, but you know what you're getting from a Marvel movie

They're not for everybody.

It's called "too much of a good thing".

Ā

Star Wars is literally on the verge of doing the same thing.

Ā

If you start doing something twice a year, it stops being special any more.

The DC movies as of recent are all jst a huge bore.....Marvel at least tries to play with the element of mystery in their films....The reveals in DC movies are always lackluster and you just wonder why you sat through it when the credits roll.....The Man of Steel would have been great if it wasn't a snoozer between the first 30 minutesĀ and the climax.Ā Ā
