discolé monade Posted January 13 Posted January 13 The previous year's record warmth was due in part to the presence of the warm phase of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which began in June 2023 and continued until May of this year. A transition to ENSO-neutral conditions took place at that time and persisted through November before the cold phase of ENSO (La Niña) emerged in December, according to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. As seen in the image below, global temperatures tend to be cooler during periods of ENSO-neutral conditions and even cooler during La Niña. Although ENSO-neutral conditions were present beginning in May 2024, monthly global temperature records continued to be set or tied through August 2024. and i just read the santa ana's are picking up. i remember several wild fires. one, my unit was on standby to cut fire lines. fortunately, the winds changed, and it was finally exhaused by the next afternoon. but it was something for a few days. 1 Quote

Jman Posted February 1 Posted February 1 (edited) The fire has been contained at least. California may have issues with it due to geography, but investing in desalination plants might be a good idea. Works for Aruba, which is why one of the few things they produce locally is beer. The alternative is mush for brains having another brilliant idea no one can stop. Edited February 1 by Jman Quote

discolé monade Posted February 2 Posted February 2 so, this is what is happening. without due process, or judication...just fucking march on in..create chaos, possible flooding, = potential loss of life. mkay..i'm done interwebbing for the day. The release of the water comes after Trump claimed on social media on Monday that the U.S. military "just entered the Great State of California" in an attempt to improve the water supply. 2 Quote

The problem with it, and in particular the RO process used to remove salt and other minerals from sea water, is that the discharge back into the ocean can be toxic to sea life. Even if the RO “brine” is predominantly salt being put back into salt water, it’s creating pockets of high salinity in coastal waters where a lot of vulnerable plants and animals, including several species of small fish, mollusks, and sea weeds. It also has the potential of altering migration patterns for larger mammals and fish. That’s not to say that Newsome hasn’t pushed for more desalination, he just doesn’t have the hubris to flaunt environmental protection regulations to do it. 2 Quote
