If I was 80 and Olympics was all I could watch then I’d just morphine myself to death.

I have not watched even a bit of it but all anyone can talk about is the Algerian and Taiwanese gender controversy 🙄

Had some thoughts recently about the whole thing.. like.. just, so many of the people that watch have literally no investment or actual interest in any of it. Most of the global audience probably don't even know half the sports/events, less likely to know or understand scoring for some of them, zero knowledge of competitors, poor understanding of what it takes to get there.. just on and on. All anyone really cares about is their country and how many gold medals their "team" wins. It just feels so bizarre. And, like you say, people be having opinions about shit they knew nothing about two weeks ago as if everyone's an expert now.

It just feels farcical, the way the average dimwit viewer has no interest prior, gets suddenly fired up for any opportunity to feel "we're number one!!" and immediately forgets all of it a few weeks later.

Idk.. just struck me as odd one day thinking about how number of gold medals is all most see or care about.. not even the feats that accomplish them.

The Olympics gave us the closest thing ever to a real life Metalocalypse, so for that reason alone this has been an absolutely amazing Olympics. Gojira playing with a headless Marie Antoinette on the actual site where she was held and beheaded is the most metal thing to ever happen.

The story is fucked now the Italian athlete is apologizing which is nice and all but all the outlets with the misleading clickbait headlines should be apologizing

I like the idea of having every summer game in Athens and every winter game in the Swiss alps.

That’s not a bad idea but how would it be funded.

I like the idea of just not televising the events. They do a shitty job of it anyway. Hand it over to the streaming services let them fight over it

So you think the Olympics is the most amazing one ever but not because of the athletes? And you think that’s a positive for the Olympics because?

it’s supposed to be about the athletes all the political bullshit and animosity between nations is supposed to be pot aside for 2 weeks and they fail at that. They fail miserably

Well I wasn't trying to devalue your sentiment, I'm just saying this current thing with the boxer is being blown up by our dumb ass factless media and the last supper thing was just embarrassing. Like I didn't know the source material but I wouldn't be dumb enough to think an international event should cater to my very specific religion

It's not my original idea. Switzerland is a very rich country, and the Olympic headquarters already are there. As for Athens, they do already have many venues from the last time they hosted. The whole EU could pitch in to help have the games in its birthplace.

I wasn’t trying to be an ass about your statement. (Maybe a little 😆) your way is more of a glass half full thing that I am not good at.  It’s definitely the people and not the concept that I hate though and for all the reasons you mentioned.  The media created the controversy with click/ragebait headlines and they knew exactly wtf they were doing. The outlets are aware hardly anyone actually reads an article.

I just fuckin hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I fuckin hate it.

the only half assed funny thing about the Olympics are the memes. Especially the ones showing how suddenly the US can’t shoot.  We didn’t even place

The last supper controversy omg don’t get me started on that.  And they apologized for it. A genuine apology. They should have given a back handed apology if anyone deserved it, it was the people screaming how offended they were. They deserved an “I am sorry if anyone was offended by something we weren’t doing” type of apology

woah woah woah, hold onto your tits there Pooh.

That opening ceremony with Gojira was the greatest moment ever in opening ceremony history in my opinion. It was Metal to its core, and just perfect.

The games themselves have also been awesome. Watching the athletes at this level is always amazing. I dont even have to like the sport to enjoy watching them at these levels. That moment with the NK SK and Chinese athletes taking a picture together was awesome. The French Teddy Bear winning the Judo gold today was awesome. Simone. Pomel Horse Guy. Turkish Shooter Dad. And the memes. Its been great.

It's people that I hate.  I'm indifferent towards the Olympics.

I will say that Gojira performance was amazing, though.

I used to love the Olympics now I hate them because people made it suck.  Gojira was great but again people made the opening ceremony suck. It’s been nonstop bullshit and those performances don’t justify doing this shit anymore

You had me until the whole “EU could pitch in to help” thing.

As to the OP, this ties into the Caster Semenya controversy that never quite went away.  The IBA is a disgraced organization so it’s “failed gender test” rubric can easily be dismissed as corrupt, but the issue of arbitrarily (since there is no scientific study to back it) deciding what a woman should look like, what her genetic code is, or what her body should produce is as intransigent as it is insidious.  The problem isn’t so much with the Olympics or even people:  the concept of sport is itself fundamentally flawed.  It tries to create a level playing field in a space occupied by people who have genetic advantages.

The Italian boxer who gave up after taking a shot to the nose was not prepared for fight. Htf is a boxer gonna give up after one shot. I get that it hurts. I’ve been punched by the nose, I know, but she’s a boxer ffs and she used the controversy to cover up her own shortcomings

PS all the articles were shit articles.  They buried the fact that neither athlete identified as transgender near the end and they all said the gender tests were confidential, the IBA wouldn’t say specifically what the test was. Only one article I read mentioned something about the Algerian boxer having XY chromosomes but that is not the end all be all the biological sex. The article didn’t mention if perhaps she had an XX with a Y added, it was stupid. People are more than what their chromosomes say

I am just tired of the bullshit.  Tired of everyone’s bullshit, nonsense.

Both boxers in question won their matches by decision. That tells me those women don’t have some magical advantage that no other female can overcome. That’s what pisses me off the most. Instead of acting and treating female athletes like the elite athletes they are, they want to police them instead.  Maybe female athletes produce more testosterone once they get below a certain of body fat. I know for sure it affects the menstrual cycle.  No one knows how female biology works but everyone sure af wants to define it.
no one wanted to disqualify Michael Phelps for being a freak of nature with his huge chest and stupid long arms.  He’s a god but women are cheaters.

My favorite Olympics were the 2010 Vancouver winter games. I loved the Canada versus U.S. subplot that ran through it. The hockey tournaments had some of the best hockey I've ever seen.

Let me tell you, I absolutely loathe the fact that NHL play in the Olympics. It's so fucking stupid how the league does this bullshit with the Olympics. Stopping the season just to send players whatever the fuck the host city this bullshit takes place in. Players risking getting injury which happened to a player from my team when he suffered a back injury which almost cost us our playoff spot. And for what for Olympic gold? Sorry but I care more about winning the Stanley Cup than team USA winning a gold medal.

I am indifferent about professional players taking part. I would enjoy Olympic hockey with or without them. (2010 Vancouver led me to liking international competition hockey, which is a little niche I know.) If I had to choose, I would be in favor of pro players coming to the Olympics just for the reason it's fun to see the most famous players on such a big stage.

The other thing 2010 Vancouver did for me for make me realize I actually like curling.

and this GOAT  ZHGAAWP5L5JF3J6GW7MDXOOLCU.jpg

She’s the GOAT and I love that she knows it.  She seems to get a lot of hate out there which is so fuckin weird cuz male athletes act confident like that all the time and people gladly pay them a bajillion dollars for it. She’s not arrogant about her skill. Just matter of fact. She’s the best there is in her sport and she’s got the medals to prove it. Nothing wrong with pointing that out

i want to tell you this.

when i was 'training' during my swimming years, i would go months without a period. during invitationals, regionals, i knew i could count on no cycle for a while.

bootcamp to 1st duty station = 9 months = no cycle.

a few years later we got orders for s. america. no cycle for 4 months.

i mean...the military was don't ask don't tell. could you imagine, if they did this same kind of testing they do on the female atheletes?

i found out later in my 30's that i had extremely high testorone levels. i look and sound like a dude, but i'm ok with that ...now.  i know how manly i look. lol

these fucking men, and trying to force women to live up to some sort of pinup/centerfold status is so gross.

First of all you DO NOT look like a man. Stop that.
When I was using drugs I didn’t see my period for a decade and also when I worked out it was sporadic. Whenever I hit the gym I would get pretty big.  Female athletes sometimes don’t get a period because they don’t have enough body fat. Doesn’t make them less of a woman.

Side note both the Algerian and Taiwanese boxers won by decision and after the Taiwanese boxer won her opponent made an “XX” hand gesture. She should not be allowed to compete in any other Olympics. Now women born with a Y chromosome are going to be excluded from sports or certain events and that’s not right. It won’t matter that they never competed amongst men ever. It will only matter that they are XY instead of XX.

Biological female humans are not born with a Y chromosome. Biological female humans have two X chromosomes. Biological male humans have an X chromosome and a Y chromosome. I don't care how you live your life or what you call yourself, this is what it comes down to at the end of the day. Science matters.

Yes, there are syndromes and disorders that can cause an ambiguous presentation. I'm not going to debate that. I'm in this thread for the Turkish dude and his cat. But for the love of God, I can't sit here and see somebody unironically say that just because a woman has a Y chromosome doesn't mean she isn't a woman, because biologically, that's exactly what it means. It means she's a biological man.

All due respect you’re wrong. She and the other boxer were both AFAB and never fought amongst men. XX and XY is not the end all be all of human biology as we understand it, not anymore.  They both are women with female anatomy and the Russian controlled IBA has been banned from the IOC for corruption. So no one really knows if the XY chromosome thing is true in the first place. Have you read any of the stories on it?
