Why does Microsoft keep trying to make Internet Explorer a thing?

No Microsoft, changing the name of the browser to "Microsoft Edge" didn't make me want to use it. Giving it a fancy new icon and forcing it to open and pin itself to my task bar after updating my computer won't make me want to use it either. And putting an overlay over the screen that won't let me close the browser until I hit "Get Started" won't trick me into using it. I'm not a boomer I know how to use task manager.

I don't know if they'd just make a bare bones browser like chrome that isnt slow as fuck I might use it, but edge is trash and I kind of feel like all they did was slap a new name on it more or less myself.

Meh. I feel like they already have too much of a reputation as being shit and even if they made the best browser ever people wouldn't use it. Even as a child I recognized how shit IE was and was using Netscape, then Chrome/Firefox when Netscape died. I feel like a lot of Millennials are the same way. And I'm guessing a lot of people in the younger generations are, too. Especially since there's a lot more mobile device use now. Apparently Edge does have an app on the Play Store but it has 10 million downloads to Firefox's 100 mil and Chrome's 5 billion lol. Like I don't know anyone other than maybe my mom who still uses Edge, and I think even she may have finally listened to me and switched to Chrome.

edge isn't nearly as terrible as IE was. that being said, i would never use it. Firefox forever

I don't think I've ever used Edge other than to download Chrome.

Apparently Windows downloaded an automatic update for it that made it open when I first started my PC and told me all about "the new and improved Edge!" or something like that. I had to use task manager to close it because it tried to force me to click something to "get started" with Edge.

I've used edge.. unless you streamline the shit yourself you have microsoft ads and sponsor ads coming straight into the browser. Not mention having to turn off cortana and fuck with all those settings.. I havent spent much time doing shit like that since I can just download chrome and not mess with it, but I feel like it'd fall way behind chrome speedwise even with all the bullshit off.

I only used Edge when we were on Mixer because I don't like Chrome and Firefox had problems with it. Weird that it had you do that because I did an update yesterday and that didn't pop up for me.

I've only used Edge to download Chrome, or on those extremely rare situations where a website won't open in Chrome. And I only resort to testing Edge for that after verifying that Chrome is up-to-date.

Had to do this recently because I maxed out my DSL speed on AT&T and the new service jumps to this stupid "dnserrorassist" AT&T webpage if there's an error in a hyperlink.  AT&T's instructions take you to a switch that you can turn off to stop this, which in true AT&T fashion doesn't work.  After Edge also failed, the only resolution was to change the DNS switchboard operator from AT&T to Google.

bzzt wrong.

the man who encouraged it was born in 1942. Boomers are between 1946 and 1964.

Well, if you want to be snarky, you're wrong too.  Here's a depiction of an OT (original task manager)...

Did you recently install Win10 or something, because I did encounter this a few weeks ago on my kids mother computer after upgrading hers to 10. But all you had to do was right click the icon and force the window to close since the overlay wouldn't allow me to just exit, but it was annoying that it pinned itself to the task bar.....I didn't notice at first and when I rebooted, it opened again on startup.

I just got Buddy a laptop for his birthday a week or so ago and besides it asking after the initial setup, it hasn't asked again, even after an update like Wednesday.

This happened to me yesterday, but I was too lazy to use task manager. I do use IE for bing's translator if google translate is missing a few key phrases from a Chinese novel, but google has improved to the point that hasn't been a need for months.

Nah, this was a recent update that got pushed out. Same thing here. Turned on after update installed, Edge starts up with all the same shit in OP.

I did the same thing OP did and force stopped it and removed it from the taskbar yet again. I'm not getting started with anything on that.

Mixer is a Microsoft service.  Coincidence?
They're shutting it down soon, btw.
