Well what do you know? It seems maybe Toonami DOES run on Dragon Ball Super:

"Adult Swim’s line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.10/241K & 0.09/233K and 0.27/561K, PARANOIA AGENT at 0.24/487K, MOB PSYCHO 100 at 0.23/436K, BLACK CLOVER at 0.19/379K, NARUTO at 0.15/308K, and SAMURAI JACK at 0.13/247K."

Well that's on par with a week lead by a new episode of My Hero Academia.

Sigh... people just wont stop watching Dragon Ball Super.

I Really hope toonami doesn't use this as an excuse to say "DBS's Back And that's all we really need" and then not do much else

I'll never understand why Dragon ball gets such insane levels of worship in the united states to the point where many people see anime as dragon ball and think it's all there is to anime  there's nothing else but dragon ball

We only get those for cable originals anymore, and we won't see another one of those until August.

Also, LMAO: https://programminginsider.com/saturday-final-ratings-family-guy-reruns-on-adult-swim-leads-the-days-telecasts-in-adults-18-49/

The 12-3 AM "core" of Toonami ranked 4th for the year so far, and 7th in adults 18-49, while the full block was 8th for the year and 11th in 18-49.

Well guess what? We actually DID have a cable original air on Toonami in the month of July after all! Here's how it did:

Won the night in Adults 18-34, and Female and Male 12-34! Plus #2 in Adults 18-49. Not bad for a total surprise!

And this came as no surprise 5 years ago:

You know this means an end to Toonami calling their anime-funded shorts "secret"? Because the past two times they did that, they were both fan-made Rick and Morty shorts produced by animators from Japan. You cannot keep doing a secret thing three times if the audience recognizes a pattern by the second time. They will come to expect it.

Well, we still don't know how Super did in total viewers, but...

If you were wondering how the DBS marathon last weekend did, well, wonder no more!

DBS draws, and it retains, yo!

Also, you can compare it to the worst-rated lineup of all time a year before!

NOW maybe people will shut up when I say 4th of July weekend should be almost always be marathons-only!

https://toonamifaithful.com/toonami-ratings-for-july-4th-2020/

And finally, 5 years ago Kill la Kill and SAO2 were of course still kicking ass!

Was looking back at your last couple of "5 years ago" charts and damn I forgot how much ass Kill la Kill used to kick in the ratings (and SAO II).

June 13th #1, June 20th #2, June 27 #8, July 11 #7

While we wait for this weekend's JoJo ratings to come in, let's take a look back 5 years at the time ShowBuzzDaily seems to have forgotten the series finale of Kill La Kill was a premiere:

Will Golden Wind do #3 or better? We'll find out soon!!

Well, that's not very reassuring...

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-8-1-2020.html

Final-Cable-2020-Aug-01-SAT.png

It's at least better than it usually did at 2 AM in key demographics, right??

"Adult Swim’s line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.08/194K & 0.07/195K and 0.18/335K compared to last week’s 0.07/211K & 0.11/249K and 0.27, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE at 0.17, MOB PSYCHO 100 down 0.07 to 0.16/270K, BLACK CLOVER down 0.07 to 0.15/242K, NARUTO down 0.04 to 0.11/195K, and SAMURAI JACK at 0.09/173K."

Crap. We don't yet know Ballmastrz, but from what we do know, last week's lineup (7/25) was 9th overall for the year (5th from 12-3 AM), and was 5th for the year so far in 18-49 (4th from 12-3). However, this week (8/1), the number of total viewers in every timeslot was LOWER than the number of Adults 18-49 one week prior! Dead last for the year and only better than one other lineup last year (7/6/19, the block's all-time nadir).

DBS on managed 0.18 so JoJo getting 0.17 is good retention but it’s still yikes across the board.

Perhaps two weeks of Batman double features will convince WarnerMedia that Toonami needs a DC show as its headliner.

Toonami doesn't have the budget to compete. The best they can do is a couple of short run originals every three or four years, with tier 2 shows and some packaging in between. The solution is to try to engage the audience and build a community, in the way LivePD managed to build "watch parties" and the like. The problem is that Toonami had the chance when it relaunched and they missed it. Now it is stale, the packaging is mediocre and the content is lacking a consistent big draw.

I Mean How much can they really engage the audience anyways? I Mean what did you even expect them to do

  1. Involve fans in the program. Things like "dress your pet like your fav MHA Hero (or villain) and show the photos being sent in. Have a semi-permanent watch party showing. Spread the photos throughout the program block.
  2. Special streaming/events that can be accessed from passwords that are broadcast. Time the event to Sunday at 9 pm. This can be anything from AMVs to old school anime films like Riding Bean.
  3. Have (unpaid) interns do this to keep costs down. This is why you have them in the first place.

The point is that Toonami can't compete budget wise so they have to be innovative. They missed the boat on that, but with the packaging stories involving Tom and Sara they could relaunch/rebrand and include these audience involvement activities for relatively little money. A block that has new content would be ideal, such as when they get Blade Runner/Uzumaki/Dr. Stone and possibly the tail end of Fire Force S2 or even S3. A lot of fresh content with a fresh upgraded package that involves the audience will build and retain that audience.

So guys. I was in the path of tropical storm Isaias and I have no power. I am posting here on my phone using an unstable data connection. We have a generator, but with no power comes no cable and no WiFi, which means I may not be able to participate with you all this Saturday. We have no Ethernet cable. I can play Toonami on my phone through sling tv, but I cannot do that and post here on safari at the same time on my phone. So unless our systems service stops being a lazy greedy corrupt wise-ass, I won’t have power until Monday .

Believe it or not, THIS happened 5 years ago tonight! How amazing! And even more stunning was the fact that DBZ Kai cracked 2 million, for 2,015,000, probably the highest rating Toonami on Adult Swim will ever receive!

JoJo from 8/8/20 is in, and it's pretty much flat with last week or DOWN considerably in Adults 18-34:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-8-8-2020.html

Final-Cable-2020-Aug-08-SAT.png

It's amazing to see how fall cable TV has fallen. Same time slot, same night of the week, exactly 5 years later, the occupying show could only muster less than a 5th of the viewership (or not even an 8TH the 18-34 number!)  Of course back then it didn't have the NBA to compete with!

We don't yet have the numbers from this week to verify this, but I think it's clear that Dragon Ball Super reruns aren't cutting it at midnight. Hopefully the Batman movies do better this week and next. But the NBA is a formidable force. Perhaps TNT's games will contain ads for Batman this week?

Sports are back, and even in limited quantities people are hungry for them.  Scripted programming, especially programming available elsewhere, won’t cut it.  At least Batman is somewhat fresh.

Posted

I never thought I'd say this, but it looks like we need SAO to save us beyond Batman. I think it would do pretty well as a midnight lead-in and at least give us a solid hour of dub premieres for the next 9 weeks. Even Fire Force Season 2 will never be one of those!

With no break on Labor Day weekend, JoJo would end right before Halloween. I think it would be pretty cool if it were also the Halloween marathon, and it could also feature a video of that JoJo rap song, perhaps with clips from all 5 parts for its final sendoff on the network (well, until Part 6: Stone Ocean is produced and arrives anyway. Maybe beyond the pandemic?)

SAO of course would be another option for the Halloween marathon, and both COULD feature an extended Toonami for DST. (4.5 hours instead of 3.5). For SAO that would be Episodes 13-21 of WOU (1-9 of the new cour)--but I believe I'm getting ahead of myself here. We don't even know for sure SAO is coming at the end of the month, after all! But that Halloween JoJo sendoff (of GW episodes 31-39 or 32-39) sounds like a cool idea to me.

Hey, you're right!

In fact, I'd say it's a bit more likely that they'll do a Paranoia Agent Halloween marathon. The fact that it's also the end of DST means they have the unique opportunity to run all 13 episodes if they expand to 5:30 for one night only, and that still offers room for a 30-minute buffer before CN takes over.

Bested only by UFC prelims, and in the case of DKR Part 1, a Shark Week special, in 18-49. Hopefully the Bat can keep it up next week on the same bat-channel at the same bat-time!

Oddly enough, Toonami occupied the exact same chart positions 5 years ago, though with much higher actual numbers in MOST cases; note that in 50+, Batman actually BEAT SAO from 5 years ago!!

That and the Toonami audience, as has been said, was starved for fresh content.  Let’s see if next week, sans competition from a UFC PPV (a free card should be over right when Gotham Knights is starting) can do similar.

Man if they had done this even a year ago they probably could have broke 800,000 for both Batman films but having both in the top 5 says enough. I wonder if Year One out rated Family Guy.

By my math, the block's average was 465K total viewers, and 307K adults 18-49. I'm not sure if that's the new high for the year, but I think it may be.
