Toonami Unevenedge Ratings Discussion 3.0: Let The Good Times Roll!!!!!

The good news is the 2nd half actually did relatively well:

Adult Swim’s line-up included the special HOLY CALAMAVOTE at 0.16 and the ERIC ANDRE SHOW at 0.13, and its regular shows rated as follows:  DRAGON BALL at down 0.05 to 0.13/252K, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE down 0.03 to 0.14, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM down 0.02 to 0.15, FIRE FORCE down 0.01 to 0.14/259K, NARUTO up 0.01 to 0.14/275K, and DEMON SLAYER steady at 0.13/253K.

That's right, folks. ASS CLASS at 2 AM led the block!

Holy Calamafark... that special didn’t do well on live TV. It was a great performance IMO. I wonder how well it did on HBO Max, the YouTube video only has about 211,000 views so I guess the TV airing has that beat by at least 90,000.

Ass Class held out at 2am but I hope it doesn’t lose steam in November when it moves to 1:30am.

And while Eric Andre probably didn’t do DBS any favors, it’s still nice to see JoJo and Ass Class beat DBS reruns with 18-49 and total viewers.

Ratings are in for "Cable Originals" for the last normal weekend of October, and JoJo had a solid network finish (for now):

image.thumb.png.d9f6c7f90e21b09cd5d7df166afe0e80.png

A 0.2 (~140K) in 18-34? I'll take it. But what's really hilarious is how much better it did than Dream Corp. LLC in the same timeslot 24 hours later:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-sunday-cable-originals-network-finals-10-25-2020.html

#68 and 198K--in other words, JoJo Part 5's finale effectively DOUBLED its audience in the same timeslot the night before!

"Adult Swim’s line-up rated as follows:  DRAGON BALL up 0.07 to 0.20/433K, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE up 0.04 to 0.18, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM up 0.03 to 0.18, BLACK CLOVER at 0.17/326K, FIRE FORCE steady at 0.14/277K, NARUTO down 0.01 to 0.13/247K,  DEMON SLAYER up 0.01 to 0.14/264K, and GEMUSETTO MACCHU PICHU at 0.12/214K."

Demon Slayer still doing exceptionally well at 3-ish AM!

October 31, 2020 The Promised Neverland Season 1 Ratings:

https://programminginsider.com/saturday-final-ratings-ohio-state-once-again-proves-its-ratings-prowess-on-abc-saturday-night-football/

Average of 181.7K total viewers and 120.8K adults 18-49. Not bad for a Halloween marathon. Nothing under 150K total viewers or 100K adults 18-49. Dead last for the year, but I don't care; it was nice just having the first season back on the air!

Well, predictably enough after the presumed Biden victory, news and sports dominated the Top 50 to the point that the 2 hours of Toonami that were eligible to make it missed it. That said, the anime premieres did OK, but then Gemusetto was down considerably:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-11-7-2020.html

It remains to be seen if Shippuden and Demon Slayer could escape from the abyss and manage to do alright, but we will most likely know later today, along with the Primal duo.

You mean the unfunny American animated show did poorly on a block filled with adult anime?

I’m stunned.

Look, sometimes writers need to find the right outlet for their work.  I’ve said it before but Tim & Eric found their sweet spot in advertising and writing for stuff like Steve Brule (that and Moonbase 8 is what Space Force should have been), but Tom Goes to the Mayor assuredly did not play to those strengths on an animation block.  Maybe that’s the case here, that this guy shouldn’t be doing anime parodies on an anime block conditioned to view American anime parodies, with very few exceptions (Megas XLR, we miss you) as complete dreck.

I can't believe it, MSNBC actually cracked the Top 50 for once.

It actually happens quite regularly on Monday-Friday. They USUALLY rely on reruns on Saturday night, which are ineligible. But obviously Biden's acceptance speech changed all that!

About a 0.04 drop from Ass Class into Death Beats. Oooph. I wonder how it did on Sunday.

It would seem it may have done a little better, since it got a better lead-in than on Toonami.

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.21/393K, SWORD ART UNDERWORLD at 0.17, FIRE FORCE at 0.17, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM at 0.16, GEMUSETTO at 0.12/0.11, NARUTO at 0.11/207K, and DEMON SLAYER at 0.09/201K."

Well, unfortunately no rebound for the late night part of the block. And DBS at Midnight clearly ain't working!

Well, all 5 eligible shows made the list, but these numbers are still eh.

I wish the news would take a break just ONE Saturday! And reruns STILL don't work at the top of the block! Maybe after the PRIMAL marathon on Thanksgiving Weekend, we'll come back with something new and they'll be kicked down to 3:30 or something? Yasha-Hime, maybe? Then again, if they were gonna start airing that in December, they would have announced it at the Final Pre-Flight, right??

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.25/443K compared to last week’s 0.21/393K, SWORD ART UNDERWORLD up 0.02 to 0.19, FIRE FORCE down 0.01 to 0.16, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM down 0.01 to 0.15, GEMUSETTO at 0.14/0.14 compared to last week’s 0.12/0.11, NARUTO up 0.01 to 0.12/213K, and DEMON SLAYER steady at 0.09/189K."

By the way, it turns out DBS, SAO, and Fire Force all beat the BUTT Bowl (Baylor University at Texas Tech) on Fox Sports 1 in Adults 18-49, and all of Toonami from 12:30-2:30 AM beat it in Adults 18-34 and several other key demos! Kick that BUTT, Toonami!

Guess not...

Fire Force and Ass Class back over 300K though, plus Ass Class up 0.02 in 18-49, while SAO went DOWN 0.02. Interesting...

All 3 proper anime premieres up pretty big in 18-34 though!

Ay, guess who moved to Hulu Live?

The Nielsen system is obsolete. May it burn in Hell.

What the hell does that even mean?

In related news, here are the full ratings for November 21st. Nothing for the PRIMAL marathon yet, but we MIGHT know by the end of the week!

Welp,

Not sure but I think that's a new series low for SAO. And Ass Class some led the charge in key demos, so maybe it should be leading instead of DBS?

What's really ugly is that the 2:15 AM episode of Gemusetto: Death Beat(s) got under 200K viewers and <0.1 in 18-49, but good thing it's being put out of its misery this month!

I'm really starting to think moving DBS out and letting Ass Class air at midnight could actually do pretty well.

Sorry, but not so fast...

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up returned from a week off as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.21/436K, SWORD ART ONLINE at 0.14, FIRE FORCE at 0.14, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM at 0.15, GEMUSETTO at 0.11/0.09, NARUTO at 0.09/194K, and DEMON SLAYER at 0.11/208K."

Ass Class rebounded but it did nowhere NEAR what DBS is still able to do at Midnight. I daresay pretty much the only things that could take its timeslot are either AOT's final season or Yasha-Hime. That said, I do believe that is what is on tap for 2021, and DBS will probably end up in the returning 8 PM hour! It would, of course, be interesting if it were to return with MHA at 8:30 this time, but I doubt they'll try that. Just double up on DBS and let Toonami get a new lead-in show.

Well, we won't know what Ass Class can do right after Family Guy unless they try it.

A less drastic move would be to put Ass Class at 12:30 and shift down SAO but they probably have plans for 12:30 early in the year. (Not likely Gridman for the record). Or perhaps they could move DBS to 11:30 and let Ass Class have midnight.

It will certainly be interesting to see what they do with Gridman. Since it's older (late '18), a direct replacement of Gemusetto might not be out of the question. But I do find it funny that there are so many BIG fish out there in early 2021, some emerging in late 2020: AOT Final Season; Yasha-Hime; and Dr. Stone Season 2, and somehow SSSS: GRIDMAN is the show they used the final Pre-Flight to announce.

BUT they MAY also be able to do with Gridman (or should I say "SSSS") what they could not with Mob Psycho 100: air the 2nd season in 2021!

SSSS.Dynazenon (TV) - Anime News Network

Yes, that's right! SSSS saga has a new season, and it's coming out in Japan in April, which of course means we'll probably get it in July! I would expect Promised Neverland Season 2 to fill the stopgap!

Even Death Beat(s) didn't do too bad! See what difference a slow news cycle makes?

Edit: not sure why I didn't post this earlier...

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL up 0.04 to 0.25/483K, SWORD ART ONLINE up 0.06 to 0.20, FIRE FORCE up 0.06 to 0.20, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM up 0.01 to 0.16, GEMUSETTO at 0.14/0.13 compared to last week’s 0.11/0.09, NARUTO up 0.04 to 0.13/247K, and DEMON SLAYER up 0.01 to 0.12/244K."

Didn't fall below 100K adults 18-49; not too bad. Better than Samurai Jack Season 5's video game tie in, which pulled a mere 75K one week!

As for this past weekend:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-12-19-2020.html

image.thumb.png.3b72878e012331a31cc4509ef8927eef.png

Wonder Woman: Bloodlines checks in at #11 with fewer than 500K viewers. And I thought its female viewership might be just a LITTLE higher. Still, an average of 0.23 in 18-49 sustained all the way to 1:45 ain't too shabby. It's about on a par with what Mind Game did in 2018.

That is way above any one of the shows on the regular line-up! Any more of these and it may convince the CEOs hijacking the block from the previous owner to just run DC animated movies instead!

I wouldn't mind seeing an all-night Toonami takeover on occasion where it airs hyped-up DC movies before midnight, then the regular lineup at midnight. That would be the best of both worlds!

That's far too good an idea for them to actually do....

First Ratings Report of 2021:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-1-2-2021.html

image.thumb.png.633f0e762a7f0386d799e07f92c8ed22.png

Kind of a blah start to the new year, but what the heck is up with SAO and Fire Force? Just a 0.15 in 18-34 for SAO but a 0.19 for Fire Force!? Did Toonami really shoot up >25% from 12:30 to 1 AM!? And then Ass Class GAINED in Men 12-34 after that, beating BOTH its predecessors!?

Another weird thing is that 25-54s are considerably higher across the board than 18-49s. I don't think that usually happens, but it could indicate Toonami is beginning to skew slightly older.

Only time will tell if this is a high or low benchmark for 2021. Hopefully AOT's return shakes things up a bit next week.
