You know what sucks about being a comedian.....

Besides the depression and massive egos you're constantly surrounded by?

The fact that even if I become the biggest comedian ever I'll never be as cool as any musician. Or actor for that matter.

Like comedians are kinda the unpopular kids. I guess it's a good thing that I don't do it for fame. Trying to get famous by doing stand up is like trying to get skinny by smoking meth.

LAUGH AT MY TEARS, YOU FREAKS! LAUGH!

That's where you just lie lol. Just make shit up. I know comics who have had a newborn daughter for five years.

Luckily, as a comedian, you are more likely to be well equipped to deflate some of those egos.

Just bring the snark.

That's true. Not all comics have massive egos but like 60% of them think they are gods gift to the world. It can be very discouraging

Not buying it.  There are plenty of comedians that are "rock stars" in their own right.  Murray, Ackroyd, Winters, Iglacias, Chappelle, Pryor, Candy, Carlin, Farley, Belushi, Miller, etc.  Most made movies but got their start doing either stand-up or improv.

True but none of them are nearly as popular as most musicians. Only people that pay attention to comedy think their rock stars

Then don't stop. I think if you don't stop you're likely to make it. I think most ppl just stop

When I was in hs I wrote a paper on standup and since I needed a direct source I sent a msg to Maria Bamford on myspace asking if I could interview her for my paper. She let me ask her 1 question and I asked what her advice would be to aspiring comedians and her answer was like - just make yourself keep doing it and keep doing it and dont stop, and repeated that sentiment like a dozen different ways.

That advice is fucking spot on.

True but it just shows the type of person he really is. Even if I owned Fort Knox I'd still treat everyone like they were human beings

Not me, man. When I'm at that crazy "more money than God" level of rich, I'm gonna be a complete piece of shit.

I'll gonna walk around southern California headbutting children in the God damn nose.

I have a lot of respect for good comedians. It's such a difficult thing to do well. I couldn't.

Carlin is one of my favorites.

I imagine it must be an amazing feeling though, getting those laughs. Easy to see why some comedians get big egos with an experience like that.

Dude, it's crazy because being a performer means you simultaneously have extremely low self-esteem and a really big ego. You want everyone to hear you, but you also are so damaged that you feel the need for everyone to hear you.

At least that's me. I can only speak for myself. I'm not a comic, but I have performed live on many occasions.

There's a difference between being a dick and not suffering fools.....Jerry Seinfeld does not suffer fools

I would've loved to have been a comedian, but my threads on the ol' ASMB where I tried to be funny would always sink to the bottom with little to no replies, so I came to the conclusion no one thought I was funny but me. :(

I'm wondering in what sense you are using "popular" and "rock star" in this thread. I would say there is like one "local" rock star here, but all he does are covers, I don't think he plays any originals. He's beloved by many bar-goers though. The days of the national "rock star" are long over, in the rock genre in particular. Whether you mean musicians are popular in the sense that the people around them like to be around them, maybe, but they ain't getting famous and making dough any time soon. I'm assuming being a gigging musician still helps you get laid, though. That's what everyone tells me, anyway.

To be fair, text-based humor is completely different from spoken humor. Shit, I've laughed at jokes that were inherently lame, but the way they were delivered was hilarious.

Would Mitch Hedberg even be funny AT ALL if it weren't for his distinctive delivery? xD

One example is Kevin Hart being the first comedian in history to sell out a venue that Garth Brooks had already sold out like 7 times in the 90s. People like music way more than comedy
