Question about idiot taxes

Recommended Posts

Just bought 10 $2 scratchers, won $20 on a single ticket.

Money back. Better than losing.

I live in Florida and I'm just curious though.

Years and years ago when I was a kid, I remember scratchers would have money back prizes and 'Free Ticket' prizes. I don't remember when but our state lottery eventually phased out 'Free Ticket' prizes. Dunno why, maybe law related or something.

So I'm just wondering, if the state you live in has scratchers do they have 'Free Ticket' prizes? Just money back at the lowest tier? Similar situation where they phased 'Free Ticket' prizes out?

I don't remember ever getting any free ticket prizes in OH, PA, MI, or CA

I think they either passed a law or got rid of them because people were bitching about enabling something something Skinner monkey box. Idk.

They do routinely run 'second chance' games where if he ticket is a dud you can go online and enter a code to enter contests for cruise tix or cars and shit like that.

I've never played a second chance game.

They remind me of those scams in the 90s where car dealerships would mail out a bunch of keys and the idea was you go down to the dealership and if your key unlocks their prize box you won something, couple hundred bucks. Something like that. Never saw anyone ever win one of those so I'm pretty sure it was just a scam to get people onto the lot.

To be honest, I'm not sure if Texas has anything like that.

WELL GO TO THE GAS STATION RIGHT NOW AND SHOUT AT THE CLERK "I WANNA BUY AN ENTIRE ROLL OF ONE DOLLAR SCRATCHERS! YOU PICK!"

But you really have to sell it.

Like, bug your eyes out, slam your fists on the counter, keep sniffling and rubbing your nose, don't break eye contact, lean over when they bend down to grab them, etc.

You have to commit entirely.

Fucking California, man...

I'm actually surprised we don't have a regulation that Florida does.

And you should actually visit. You'd love certain parts of the inland Empire. Only the college areas are super liberal. The rural areas are as red as anywhere else.

Oh, you meant scratch-offs. lol Silly me.

Sorry. I don't do that. I just buy the random lottery ticket every once in a blue moon.

Me too. That's the extant of my gambling. I just pretend for a week that life might get really awesome, lose, and then not want to play for like a year.

Quick picks are for chumps.

Real winners buy entire rolls of scratchers.

Then stand in the parking lot scratching and smoking with cigarettes while blaring death metal on their iPhone.

It may have been due to complaints.  Get "Free Ticket" and you're stuck with another ticket, but maybe you really need the cash.  Illinois had free ticket wins, but not anymore that I've come across.

It makes sense.

Even if it's just one or two dollars I bet a lot of people would rather just win back their money instead of receive a voucher for another ticket that's likely not a winner.

I'm not up to snuff on gambling laws though, so I really don't know.

I'd try to research it but I'm far too lazy.

Scratch tickets are for suckers. Only the state wins.

The cheapest ones are - usually near 1 in 5 odds.  The expensive ones ($20-30/ticket) are usually 1 in 3 or slightly less than 3.  Some state lottery websites will provide data on what games have what prizes left.

That would be 1 in 5 odds of winning something. Grand prize odds are 1 in 7.5 million.

You stand a better chance to get hit by lighting.

I know what it means.  And for me, it meant turning $20 into $100, so I'll be on the lookout for "lighting" [sic].

How many 20’s you drop before that 100 came along?

Yeah, odds are 1 in 3 you have no idea what it means.

Actually just $20.  New game & I looked up the odds and thought "what the heck, I'll try it once".  $80 extra bucks bought lunch for the week.
