I wonder how they survive during the winter when they have never been in captivity? Maybe he/she has to become acclimated to the colder water temps?

But if they've been 'domesticated' [ as much as can be expected with turtles ] , they lack the ability to store up enough fats to take on a full hibernation cycle. Ziper would starve to death / freeze if put out in the wild. 1

I’ve never had a turtle like she’s talking about. Only fresh water swamp turtles. But not really as a pet. Just rescued some and they would just wander off back to the swamp when they were ready to go.

Sometimes a truck would accidentally drive over one and I'd take them in for a bit until their cracked shell was better. And occasionally you'd upturn the dirt in the garden in spring and find someone who hadn't quite woke up yet. Wild turtles know how much they need to binge on in order to survive the winter and then dig a hole. Tame turtles have a steady food supply so they never quite click over to feast-for-famine mode. Tame turtles will just keep eating. 1

We try to rescue them when we see them crossing the road. Sometimes we are too late. I rescued about a 40 pounder a couple years ago. He/she was mad as hell, but I saved it. Released it in the swamp. This specific turtle I've told her repeatedly what size tank to get because of how big the turtle is going to get and she keeps "forgetting" even though that's the most basic shit you should look up before getting any pet - how big does it get, do I have enough room for it. We just went over this a couple months ago when she "upgraded" to a 40 gallon which is still way too small, now here we are again
Still Me Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 Surprise surprise...one more thing you can’t take care of
lupin_bebop Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 Idea? Give Zipper to your mom, since she’s better at taking care of her shit than you. Seriously, it will survive better if she takes care of them.

Aquatic turtles will bury themselves in the pond floor, and go into a kind of hybernating process.. alligators do it to. It is known as... fuck it that's what they do though.. A captive turtle might not be able to adapt back and start that metabolic process though. 1
