$300 electricity bill

The bill here is $350 a month in the summer because two, sometimes three A/C's, my gf's brother's gaming machine, the pool filter at times, and I haven't torn down the 98billion watt shop lights in the basement to convert to smaller, dimmable LED's.

i think its the heat and madison leaving my ps4 on all goddamn day.

Either later this year or next year I am replacing the original 1972 gas furnace with a new unit, which will leave me adequate space to later install an A-coil for a central air unit... to add to that, someone converted the dryer from gas to electric, so once I install the A/C I also am getting a fucking gas dryer and using the circuit from the dryer for the A/C... should bring the summer electric bill down to AT LEAST $250 |:: and the gas bill will remain the same or still decrease because MUCH more efficient furnace, even with adding the dryer back to the gas line.

.

lies

Nope. It was $29.89. Previous month was $27.95. The statement was still by the computer. I have lights, tv and computer on constantly and fans running all the time and still don't hit whatever you hit. $300 for just a month of electricity is frightening. O.o You supplying the whole neighborhood or what?

My bill used to be like $10-30 tops, no matter what I did, but my provider sent a letter saying rates were going up

and I think the last bill was my first to break $100.. Though I've probably ran the A/C more than ever this summer.

It's been killing me this year, and I like it to be cold inside.

the fuck do you do down there, build a server farm?

well, it's an actual bar. 2 commercial under-bar bottle coolers, a draft cooler, a 3-door display merchandise cooler, and a walk-in cooler. all that produce heat in order to chill beers. then the air conditioner has to remove all that heat, plus it's been 90+ degrees outside for the last month. and all the neon lights and tv's on for 16 hours a day. adds up.

sometimes the bill is as low as $600 in the winter.

oh, i thought it was a "bar". that seems more reasonable then

So, you're looking for a high wattage appliance that stays active most of the time.  When you find it, question whether you need it.  Are your appliances measured in amps?  Multiply amperage by voltage and you'll know the wattage.

How many watts does a sybian use?

That's not bad.  We have five air conditioners, and in hot months we can get $1k bills.  It's rare, thankfully.

before we signed on with one of those aggregate programs, our bill was maxing out at $1100-1200 per month in the summer at the bar.

at our old house, the summer cooling bills would regularly go over $200, and the heating bills in the winter would be in the $250-300 range. that was a tiny-ass, newer, 700sqft split-level. we've been in the new (100yo) house for a year now, and our cooling bills have been about the same and heating has gone down by about $50-100/mo, only now we're controlling temperature in a 2300sqft house. i guess they don't build 'em like they used to.

I'm surprised you didn't look into a couple of solar panels to offset the cost

solar is nice, but not exactly cost-effective at those levels. i've looked into it, but it's not something that will recover its cost anytime soon. to install a system capable of 12,000kwh annual production (my average over the last year), you'd be looking to spend at least $20k on materials + installation cost, so probably around $25k. it would take me 11 years to recover the cost, assuming the batteries held out for that long (they wouldn't) and the panels continued to output 100% efficiency over their lifetime (they don't). as you scale down, you're gonna be looking at the same amount of time to recover the cost to install whatever size solar array you're considering. until the cost to install solar reaches $.50/watt and less, it's not gonna be a viable option for a majority of people.

i'm gonna start small though, and install four 100w panels on the hobby shed i plan on building next spring. should generate enough to run some lights and maybe a radio/tv and wifi repeater.

Depending on the quality of the house, of course.  I mean you can find some real hovels built in the '00s of last century, and they're complete shit.  But, imagine you're in an old farmhouse the probably has huge thick walls and was designed to be naturally cool in the heat of summer and warm in the winter.  I joke about my bill, but my house is over 8,000 sqft, so there is a lot to heat and cool, even with comparatively modern construction.

I'd post a truncated scan of the actual bill but you'd still claim it was mocked up. Not worth my energy.

You suck at bills. Time to get out the candles and pretend to be a pioneer.  :D

You had to have seen times in the past where the bills were a bit bigger than you liked. You would have had the chance to think about what had change during the billing cycle to cause the increase [more AC? all the lights on all the time? etc etc] . You would have changed things to lower the bills [only AC in the afternoons or alternate with fans in high traffic areas, change out all the bulbs to the energy saver ones that last for freaking years, etc etc] . But apparently you didn't.

Therefore, you suck at bills. Very simple.
