Trying to get published?

Eventually.

The book itself isn't necessarily close to being finished, but the thesis requirement is 150 minimum.

Of course, our professors won't read a 500 page book when they have to read other theses too,

so I'm going to cut off the work I do between 150-200, then probably provide a brief outline for the rest.

Also trying to find time for short fiction writing,

but so far no snags yet for publication.

A publication I love asked for more work though, so I'll be sending them stuff after contest results in August.

how many words

Probably about 36,000 at that point.

Because of its influence in the detective genre, I'll probably chisel it down more to be even punchier,

but generally I'm working with Hammett's Red Harvest at my side.

jesus christ, i think all of my college papers combined were 122 pages. maybe not even that. if i ever got that assignment i'd be "lol fuuuuuuuck that" but that's probably why i don't have my masters

It's a lot, but I get to make this shit up and make it as weird as I want and about whatever I want it to be about.

What is it on?

It's a creative thesis, and I've decided to pursue a novel, instead of the more typical form of short story collection.

In the simplest terms, it's a detective novel. It involves a missing person. The protagonist is kind of an idiot.

He's definitely an inspiration for the story.

The dude in the pic looks like he's holding a Super Nintendo controller, so this "Pidge" person was probably trying to fix an old broken SNES but made it worse.

The SNES comment gave me some context for which episode it could be (Space Mall)

and I was right:

Man, that brings me back.

My novella "thesis" was, I think, about 180 pages.  It's been about 17 years, so I'd have to dig it up again.  I tell you what - writing that thing was one of the best experiences I ever had.  And, picking it up from the book binder was just a thrilling experience.  If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been working on it?

I think there were some very early iterations of this story that I really hadn't connected with, from like high school.

They weren't funny, and their weirdness was unintentional. This particular idea feels like it evolved from those,

but came to a more solid realization in my first year in the program last summer.

Totally the way to go.

I decided to start mine from scratch and, ultimately, I always felt like it didn't have any cohesion as a story.  Obviously, it was good enough to get my degree, but one of these days I'll need to revisit it an retool it.

Is yours a two year program?

Typically, at least for fiction students.

But writing the novel on top of the short stories I wrote, I'm taking one extra semester to complete the novel.

Yeah, the "graduating" part of the degree isn't difficult. I've had some friends who graduated and felt like they had no more spirit for their longer work, despite the defense and reading going swimmingly.

Good luck  O0

Last year, I finally finished my grad thesis on surveillance cinema. I racked up around 113 pages, but a good amount of time was invested into research.

If there was any academic grad program I would willingly do, it would be cinema.

My Communications major was the most slapped together thing ever. They lumped in rhetoric, mass media, and film all under the same envelope, which is why my thesis was part film analysis and part mass media analysis.

Because the films I saw had a political tinge to them, I spent half of my time on the paper talking about America during the 90's, the aughts, and present day, and how surveillance evolved during the internet boom and the War on Terror.

It was a tough balancing act to combine "What is the camera conveying?" with "Let's discuss the public reception of the Patriot Act", but I was indecisive and it didn't help that I was into studying mass media and film because my major had a thousand different components to it.

I was cringing at how long your thesis had to be until this post. While it still sounds hard as hell, your professor gave y'all the creative freedom sweet spot. Congratulations on getting this far in your assignment.
