    What's funny is just how wrong Lazzo's view wound up being. Even back when he said it, long-form serialized anime like Naruto and Bleach were exploding in popularity worldwide. The block all but killed off its anime offerings at the same time the domestic anime bubble was at its peak. Fast-forward to today, and anime/manga are massive globally. On the live-action side of things, the entire "prestige era" of television hits is full of series that involved prolonged plot arcs and character development, including many comedy series. Lazzo may not have wanted his productions to get too lore-heavy, but time has borne out that he was in a small minority.

    I was going to make the 6+ hour drive to the path, but the forecast was for almost all cloud cover so I decided it wasn't worth it. Really sucks too, this is totally a bucket list thing for me.

    It feels like an absolute crime that [as]/Toonami never got to air Escaflowne proper, only the (very different) movie version. An all-time classic Sunrise fantasy mecha, with a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno at the top of her game...it would have been a natural fit.

    I was never an actual fan of most of his work, but he was an absolute titan, and without his influence so much of what followed him wouldn't have even existed. Rest in peace.

    I know everyone has joked about this forever, but every single line between the two of them in this episode was literal romantic dialogue. I honestly think that the entire series would have been much better if that was canon. Naruto's been pining after Sasuke like a jilted lover this whole time, so why not formalize it? Anyway, as a friend said, that might have been a legitimately good episode if it was in any way earned. But it wasn't, so we're left with Naruto pouring his heart out to someone who's been an insufferable git since day one.

    A friend mentioned this and I did a massive double-take until I remembered that [as] has taken over half the network at this point. Threw it on the DVR since I somehow missed out on it despite loving the novel.

    Even pre-Covid I was usually only good for one or two per year, but I've only seen one post-Covid that I can remember, which was Me: Maverick (and that kicked ass).

    I think they were trying to go for solemn pathos or something while Naruto and Sasuke were staggering around and slapping at each other, but I was sitting there laughing at it instead. It went on for so long that it was unintentionally hilarious.

    My dude, it's a basic cable block showing anime in the year 2024. There are bigger things to get upset over. Anyways, it's kind of nice to have a half-hour I don't need to care about every week. Suffering through DBZ once was enough for me. If I want to watch an actually good version of it, I'll throw on Abridged.

    Someone said to me that this episode contained one of the dumbest lines in manga history, and my God they were not wrong.

    Netflix isn't the exclusive streamer for the new episodes or anything. They're streaming on Crunchyroll as they always have, so Netflix presumably wouldn't have any say over whether Toei chooses to sell them elsewhere too.
