rpgamer
I'd wager, after the voices, the music is going to be the second big hurdle in whether this turns out acceptable. Even if they got Kanno on board, there's no guarantee it'd have the same punch these decades later..
MasqueradeOverture
I've figured out part of why the Netflix opening is so corny. There's 100% less smoking compared to the anime OP. Spike's not allowed to just lean around and Philip Marlowe it.

DangerMouse
Okay, I actually quite enjoyed that teaser. Also, "What Planet is This" from the Bebop movie still ROCKS in here, just like "Tank!". Green Bird still sounds iconic too. Even if it may just be for this little bonus production I really liked the fight choreography and the way they did the edit with the bars thing too and how fully integrated it was and not just half-assed, that clearly took a lot of time and it felt cool. Unless it's someone who hears bad things about anime in general but has been given info that "but BEBOP iz one uv the GUUUUUD ones" and immediately sees things from this version instead and says "FUCK. THIS. BULLSHIT who is this even for?!!!!1!!1@!!" before they can go hunting for the original (on the same damn service even). Yes, it can do harm. Anime still has a level of stigma and this doesn't help. Edited October 21, 2021 by MasqueradeOverture
EmpressAngel
Calm your tits. I hate to drag out the ol' Dragonball Evolution dead horse, but if that couldn't "taint its series' legacy" then nothing Netflix Bebop can do could ruin original Bebop's. Seriously, where do y'all keep coming up with these weirdly specific hypothetical viewers to be so concerned about? So the person in your example is someone who's heard that Cowboy Bebop is a great anime, goes to look for it, finds a live action series circa 2021 that's openly going to say "INSPIRED BY COWBOY BEBOP CARTOON" in the credits, assume this live action one is what they've been recommended, watch enough of the series to be soured on the entire franchise, totally skip over the original series that's inevitably going to be recommended right next to the damn thing, and never bother checking out the anime? Or maybe, just maybe, the recommendation they'll get is "Cowboy Bebop is an amazing anime. Don't bother with the live action remake, though" and just watch the anime, which is easy to tell from the live action series by obviously being a goddamn cartoon? Jman
I don’t hate it. I think it’s sort of the split you expect, when a cartoon tries to be live action, the live action tries to be a cartoon. And they split the difference.

Pretty much. Already expected some people would go in hating it and nothing could win them over even if it ended up good. They would nitpick everything to hell. There was never going to be a consensus on this one given how beloved the original is. Admittedly I know I probably won't be harsh enough on it lol since I'm just hoping it's decent and can keep improving as it goes.

Probably one of the best parts about this, getting her back making music in this universe. Even more so since it's been a bit since her last anime soundtrack. Jman
You know the story of when Disney was localizing Princess Mononoke and Miyazaki's producer sent Harvey Weinstein a sword that embedded with the words "No cuts"? I predict Oda is probably sending a similar veiled death threat with the words "I saw Bebop. Do not fuck up like they did."
MasqueradeOverture
The problem with these adaptations is they totally misunderstand the tone. Obviously it's not supposed to be 1:1 because that will cause fuck-ups (see Ed), but at the same time' why is this written/directed like Scott Pilgrim when in reality Bebop is more Wong Kar-wai? Even if that was an intentional creative deviation, it doesn't excuse the sub-CW level writing/lighting/cinematography/costuming.
DangerMouse
Eh, feel like they got the overall tone, at least in the first ep. Haven't seen anything else yet though so maybe that changes. My main nitpick, at least in the premiere, would just be the lack of allowing themselves to be at least a little more subtle and less wordy with some of the dialogue, like it seems they're kind of afraid to do that: Spoiler Like how they had them spell out they're broke by actually saying they couldn't afford fuel rather than just letting it be revealed indirectly (The famous good old bell peppers and beef with no beef). Which was obviously more clunky, especially as a long-time veteran of the Bebop anime. Spoiler Some favorites in the premiere. The whole opening at the casino (with some bits of the movie's opening scene too) and the scene where they locked Faye in the bathroom just like in the anime were very well captured. The part where Spike was asking around for a lead and ran across our familiar 3 old dudes. And I kinda liked Faye and Spike fighting over the bounty, yeah it's kind of an abrupt way to get her into the show but there's also less time than the anime. I absolutely loved the gag with the password. CG for the Bebop and Swordfish are actually pretty good as was the brief exterior of the casino station and them flying through the gate area. Some of the outdoor sets definitely look too cheap, but I really dig the interior Bebop set. Some of the camera framing in there was spot on too. Chapinator_X
The first episode was really rough, but it coasted off on Yoko Kanno’s music and Jet’s actor being really good in this. I also want to root for John Cho because he’s a fun actor and it was always going to be difficult to do Spike justice. I really disliked the script and tone of the first ep though. It feels like pockets of the first episode were like the anime, but so much of it felt inspired by the dull post-Avengers & post-Kingsmen action films I’ve had to sit through. It doesn’t help that parts of the later episodes kept leaking out like the Eunich’s testicle tasting or the Radical Edward scene that was ripped straight out of To Boldly Flee. How does your soul not want to leave your body watching any of this? At least in the Death Note movie, it’s funny to watch L maniacally drive headfirst into bus stops in anger. With this, I feel like it’s the first show I’ve hate watched by choice.

MasqueradeOverture
I was afraid this would happen. After years of hearing my Bebop praise (not unprovoked, usually when the topic of the foreign entity that is anime is questioned towards my direction by these gentlemen); two of my buddies, separately, on their own volition decided to check out the live action version. They noped out before finishing the 1st episode. On top of this, I was informed of their new life's mission to never come in contact with the original or anything else remotely connected to anime ever again. I understand the live-action has brought the show back into conversation and thus new exposure, but I was weary of this side effect.
