The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board

StarPanda

The thing is crappy shows doing poorly in the ratings for Toonami is usually an abnormality.  Meaning Super sucks even more than Anime The Anime or One Piece of Crap.

Well i think the problem is they've run so much crap that people are actually becoming tired of crap. Dimension W may have gotten good ratings.... but it's going to leave a pretty bad taste in peoples mouths afterword.

I don't even care if Super is complete crap, just give me something to work with. One memorable, well animated fight. Is that too much to ask? Nah, time for 10 episodes of Goku training. We haven't seen enough of that in dragonball or DBZ.

Even though everything is way down relative to last year, it's also true that the 5 shows on Toonami considered cable originals are beating the crap out of everything else in their timeslots!

And that, as they say, is quite super!

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 925,000

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 771,000 (83.35%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 713,000 (92.48%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 649,000 (91.02%)

2:00 AM Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn 550,000 (84.75%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 539,000 (98.00%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 515,000 (95.55%)

The 12-3:30 average was the number of the Beast (666K) even, down 34%, over a third, from last year! Hopefully the 18-49 drop won't be quite as stupefying!

Hold on.

*combs through their line-up and thinks*

..... other than Samurai Jack, all the shows that Toonami is airing right now have SOME  degree of crapness that any person could use an an excuse to skip! :( That is VERY bad for the block, and the fact is, the crew doesn't seem to be aware of it.  I mean, I LOVE Hunter X Hunter, and think it's the best anime they're airing right now, but that's airing at 1:30 AM when people are usually asleep even if they do watch the beginning of the block!

Jack continues to be the saving grace on a block Toei keeps ruining.  So while Jack gets dat ass, the rest of the block disappoints.

Yes, let's all blame Toei for this one. Specifically, let's blame Chi-Chi and her inability to stay calm and collected whenever Goku's around.

Usual points for this week:

- Fuck Toei.

- If they had to show Tokyo Ghoul they should have done it last year when people gave a shit.

- Speaking of people not giving a shit, AOT season 2 waited so long to be a thing that its hype is virtually non-existent (and if it is, it's for the subbies / dub-resenters).

- No more Universal Century stuff. As much as I dig it, hands glowing with an awesome power is more suitable for late night.

A lot of people are saying MHA and MP100 should've been run last year. Do you guys think it's too late for them now considering they've been streaming for awhile now?

Super should just be its own thing outside of Toonami. Or better yet use it on another night to launch a new hour long Toonami block

- Fine.

- It was bad timing. The block was plum full to the point where they couldn't air Tokyo Ghoul until just right now.

- I chalk this up to 1.) people saying "fuck you i waited too goddamn long to care, I'm out", and 2.) the Rick & Morty April Fuck's Day where they first aired the Aot Season 2 promo which had abysmal ratings, so less people knew about AoT Season 2 coming had they ran a regular schedule in the first goddamn place.

- I cannot watch Unicorn anymore. Too confusing, and I'm not spending my time catching up by watching 7 other animes.

-This is why you don't sign a deal that gives a distributor control of programming decisions. They only care about how THEIR show does and not the rest of a block or network. At least their should have been a provision that would allow changes to be made depending on performance. Problem is neither airing is doing "bad" on its own, but the show is tanking the rest of the block

-With a show like this with so many plot twists and mysteries, waiting this long to put the show out is bad when a manga exists that tells you everything. Also, it would have been nice if this could be Day and date (nearly impossible I know)with Japan because the fans who were created with season 1 just do not want to wait when it can be streamed now, especially now that we are into the meat of the season.

-The demand for Gundam was highly overestimated out of pure live from the crew and those who have found nostalgia for Wing and G. I think IBO season 1 and 2 along with Unicorn was part of a big package in order to get Sunrise to play ball when they apparently have been hard to work with before. I doubt we'll see more Gundam after this

People do give a shit, but unlike season 1, there are way more options to watch it legally and sooner than on Toonami.

Unicorn airing is sort of the Japanese answer to Samurai Jack season 5.  Closure for long running plot lines.

But I betcha anything if Jack Season 5 aired in Japan it would get the same cold reply.

I'll actually sit through Super. Unicorn is just.... unwatchable.

I like Unicorn but I can also see why it's not doing so hot.  It's best to stay away from UC stuff if they continue with Gundam in the future.

#FuckToei, as per usual.  Everything else at least looks decent.

MHA is almost definitely a no go. I don't think Funimation wants it on Toonami any more than Netflix wants the Seven deadly Sins to air.

Re Zero and Mob were the top anime of 2016. Along with Kabaneri which was huge in Japan. Tanya the evil is probably the biggest stand out of 2017 so far.

If they don't get one of those in the next year or two it's gonna be pretty disappointing.

I don't think it's unwatchable at all! In fact, it's probably the most REwatchable show on the block next to GITS, in that you better watch a few times if you really want to figure out what's going on!

Might not be quite too late for Mob and MHA but by next year it probably is.

If Titan is doing badly because people were not expecting a dub so soon then the window they should shoot for is probably 3 months to a year after the show ends in Japan. 0-3 months after it ends in Japan is within the window of when people will still be focused on the simulcast and won't notice a TV airing or it's too fresh in their memory to watch it again if they would.

That said it could be the case that the issues only apply to Titan and other roughly as popular shows won't have the same problem. It's possible the casual audience just stopped caring about AoT after three years or switched to reading the manga and if their experience with reading the manga was like mine, at some point they may have lost interest.

Filler, particularly bad filler, never does well in ratings. When DBS gets to non-movie original, it will likely pick up.

AOT2 is being advertised for VRV streaming, so that could be impacting ratings.

Otherwise, not bad over all, and if the shows are in the top 5, then things should be fine. One bad week does not really matter.

Well, I think there's only one week left of crappy Beerus aftermath filler before we at least see the redux of the Resurrection of Frieza, the only way we will EVER see it on Toonami, so there's that. Plus, even if it's about as nonsensical as what Kekkaishi was trying to do with the Lord Uro two-parter, at least Beerus himself is back in the picture instead of other minor characters talking badly about him behind his back and Super's own Mr. Faaaaaabulous Whis!

I was shocked that we were able to rag on AOT for not beating what Gundam Unicorn's peak has been so far in its first 3 weeks (826K/523K 18-49 vs. 908K/525K 18-49), but it looks like 4th time's the charm:

Looks like AOT S2 is finally starting to captivate viewers. Well, at least it didn't lose that badly from DBZ KFC this week even if it is still a pretty rough drop! I just wish Gundam Unicorn could do a little better. It's only managed a 700K+ ONCE in that timeslot. All of the material adapted from the last 3 OVAs is doing fewer than 600K viewers so far. Compare that to what Shippuden and One Piece have done in that timeslot, and it's quite depressing!

I'd say that depends on what Adult Swim has lined up at 11 PM. My Hero Academia would probably do awesome!

But if Toonami drops 11 PM and it goes back to [as] and Family Guy, it'll still probably be OK. But I guess we'll find out the June 3rd schedule soon!

Dat Universal Century timeline man...

We need help from KYOJI!!!!!

Oh, G Gundam. Right...

I wonder how Origins (the new OVA remake of the original Mobile Suit Gundam) would do on Toonami now that Unicorn has been a moderate bomb. Hopefully it will get its chance, but somehow I doubt it. And then there's Gundam Thunderbolt, which given its 18-minute runtime per episode would be pretty much perfect to host a TIE, but then again there's no way they'll try a UC Gundam again far enough up the lineup.

It could host the weekly weird-ass music video, though!

Nice to see Titan doing better.

If they're keeping Jacks time slot after Jack is gone, I'd say give that spot to Titan.  It makes zero sense to lead your block off with the ratings poison that is Super.

I'm about 95 percent sure MHA isn't going to air on Toonami unless they are willing to pay out the ass for it.

I don't know if Super will be ratings poison now that Frieza is back in the picture.

A DB Power Hour beginning at 11 PM might actually not be a terrible idea during that saga!

Since we still don't know how well DBS at 11:30 did, here's the retention for the 12-3:30 AM portion of the block:

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 1,107,000

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 951,000 (85.91%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 803,000 (84.44%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 755,000 (94.02%)

2:00 AM Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn 561,000 (74.30%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 539,000 (96.08%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 509,000 (94.43%)

TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE - 746,429

Please note that after midnight, Gundam was the worst at hanging on to total viewers this week, which is somewhat unusual. It usually retains Hunter x Hunter better than this but also has incredible precision, not ever falling below 550K nor going above 600K since Episode 12. Last year's Toonami block on this week averaged 1008K, which means this year it was down by 26%. Still, it's nice to see DBZ KFC manage to crack 1.1 million viewers once again!

Lupin III.

I wonder how this will affect the ratings.

interesting choice, Jason Demarco must be wanting to try something new with the block
