How do you feel about all the new technology?

Idk, I'm torn.

I feel like it defeats like the entire point of driving.

That seems to be a common sentiment. Recreational driving.

would you be ok with, in your lifetime, all cars being self driven and manually driving your own car being illegal?

It wouldn't really bother me I guess.

I don’t think it makes you anti-technology to question who benefits from things or whether the rate of change is dangerous or not.

I've seen a few opinions online and in the real world that embrace the ever accelerating pace of technological advancement. I'm sure that's not really the norm yet, but the younger generations will probably increasingly see it as a good thing until things really go tits-up.

I just imagine more of a Borg scenario than "FUCK YEAH I'VE GOT BOOSTER ROCKETS THAT POP OUT OF MY BACK" scenario.

But I do want some fuckin' booster rockets. I was promised flying cars and I'm still waiting.

OOH I KNOW YOU'RE NOT REPLYING TO ME BUT I HAVE TO GIVE MY TWO CENTS

Great technology that can and probably will be misused at some point.

Proprietary vehicles that can literally drive themselves to the shop without your approval for routine maintenance and automatically charge to your credit or debit account.

Likely will be exploited at some point by hackers for any number or crimes, from simple theft to murder or assassination.

Corporations and governments can track your every move made in that car (not that they can't do it already with your smartphone but it's another mode of surveillance).

But that's the tradeoff for safer roads and more efficient travel.

It’s ok! Reply to anything in this thread. I’m really liking hearing everyone’s thoughts.

So I have another question for you... if we reached an economic transcendence, like we’re beyond money, war, and everyone benefitted equally, could you think of anything else bad about tech, AI/ML, automation?

hmmm, I'd love to try it but if I didn't care for it I'd unplug

since they had that option lol

If you were completely satisfied there and happy enough, do you think you would ever unplug and die just to die? I don’t mean like out of boredom. Like.. do you think you’d be drawn to death for its own sake and not as an escape?

If I was truly happy there then I probably would not unplug just to die.

But on a different level, it would be an interesting thought to contemplate.

Since it's just a button away to finally to find out the end.

Personally, it would depend on where I am in the simulation with others.

If I'm satisfied, then no.

If I'm not and I need to have some sort of ending, then ya.

Most of my fears are predicated on a status quo that continues into the future. I think, if we do one day transcend the fetterings of our modern existence and everyone works for the common good of everyone else, technology will probably be used more responsibly. But I think we have to have a tipping point in the wrong direction first. An "apocalypse" of sorts. It has to get worse before it gets better.

I'm terrified of death :D

We die because our cells stop replacing themselves and quality decreases. There's no reason we couldn't stop that.

I'm only a quarter joking >_>

In all seriousness, technology has improved quality of life immensely. I mean, yeah nuclear weapons are a thing and that sucks but medicine and entertainment and travel and convenience. All positives and I can only see things improving in the future.

While I haven't been on this plane of existence very long, I've lived through a few changes with technology.

Sad thing is, I've become so desensitized, it doesn't amaze me.

So do you think it’s happening too fast? Or is the densensitization something else?

Gotcha I think. So the mystery of death would never be enough to make you do it.

What about the end of spacetime and the universe?

Unfortunately I think you’re probably right

Death is inevitable one way or another. I've come to terms with that in some way. But people used to die earlier than they do now, we can at least prolong it. Maybe indefinitely until an outside force enacts.

And, not to be disgustingly optimistic, but if the smartest minds lived for hundreds of years they might be able to stop the heat death of the universe. Although, you know, entropy and all literally forbids it.

Yeah especially if you meet a cutie.

I wanted more eps to that one episode >_>

Cuz I wanted to know if the relationship lasted or if they decided to unplug.

That’s what I’m getting at. If humanity could do it and u were uber-king so the decision was up to you, would you stop the heat death of the universe or allow it to happen?

I like to think they unplugged together but that’s just me

Oh for sure. A lot of people probably shouldn't live forever, and then there's moral ramifications; if someone shouldn't live forever who decides?

But I continue to not want to die, so I'm into it.

Not worried that it’s cyclical?

Do you KNOW what the uncanny valley is?

uncannyjpeg.jpeg

The concept of the uncanny valley suggests that humanoid objects which appear almost, but not exactly, like real human beings elicit uncanny, or strangely familiar, feelings of eeriness and revulsion in observers.

I do... you don’t. I’m sorry.

I see graphs like this for uncanny valley all the time and wonder what lies beyond human likeness -- how the graph might continue past "healthy person"

also slightly weirded out by "healthy"

Is an unhealthy person less human?

But I'm also curious about the bunraku puppet, how a directly-human-controlled figure comes closer to human likeness than an android, which ideally displays autonomy and ideally passes the Turing test.

So would you want to live in San junipero forever or would you want to die naturally?

The question that gets me with the episodes like San Junipero and Black Musuem is ... how can you know for sure, you're not actually dead. Is the "self" they upload just a copy? If you believe in a soul, what happens to your soul when your body dies?!

Much like with anything, it was amazing up until some asshole thought, "Say, we're making alot of money from this, but how can we make MORE money?"

And everyone was like “Hey here’s more of my money. Would you like some of my data too? Wanna know where I live cuz I’m fine with that.”

Really any uploaded immortal mind would be like a copy. You’d probably need to keep the brain alive in a jar or something to have an immortal matrix thing going on.

unless we learn something major about consciousness/the soul/essence/mojo that contradicts what I just said
