Anything is a bit more tricky; it's commonly thought to be an arbitrary element from an arbitrary set, but We think more likely that it is not a thing at all, but rather a place holder used to convey the idea of a thing that fits certain criteria, typically determined by the context it is used in. For example: it probably wasn't anything important.

So. You're not entirely wrong. But the general expectation of "Did you know" type statements is that they are about expanding knowledge by providing a fuller picture of the world, and not peddling a narrative by leaving out context that, while not perhaps tantamount to a full exoneration, paints a very different image than the one you're promoting.
