I hope so. It seems like the reason to get the show was to premeire the 3rd season dub. I don’t know why it happened like this. Similar to GenLock and Mob , we got the first season and can’t premeire the second. Seems like a wasted opportunity

She’s new to anime fandom, prefers dubs, and has a work group who discuss the shows and she constantly gets spoilers because no one watches Toonami besides her. They actually makes fun of her for doing that when even simuldubs are ahead and she could watch those. Black Clover especially ridiculous being 12 (soon to be 14) weeks behind

Got a lot to say about this and I apologize for the long post. As a person who loves the block but is aware of their shortcomings compared to streaming, I’m starting to wonder what they are trying to be: My wife told me that if they do one more marathon, she was abandoning the airings of the Funimation shows because she’s tired of being artificially behind to support a block that doesn’t seem to care about being current. So this actually now will stop us from watching certain shows together unless I do as well. I actually thought they were serious this year about prioritizing at least being current with simuldubs I stress of adhering to these holiday marathons that are 5 days away from the actual holiday. I was hoping they would understand the importantance of at least being somewhat current with streaming. Because of this we are going from a week behind Fire Force to a month and MHA 3 weeks to 5 weeks. And Funimation isn’t stopping at all with those 2. I wonder if Japan will even take off since the episodes air Friday and Saturday - removed from the actual holiday. If you’re someone who watches Toonami only, you start to lag behind the current discussion. I really wanted them to get serious this year about the importance of not falling behind. I know we’ve come a long way, but the need to completely take the shows off for holidays being more important with staying current, just shows how stuck in the past they are. Other networks that air originals on Sundays (including AS) won’t be taking hiatuses. You seldom see cable networks completely shut down. Broadcast is another story. Ratings wise, they may be fine. But it is getting harder to justify Toonami as a viable option to watch new anime when they still cling to the old practices of TV that is becoming obsolete in the age of streaming, DVR, and OD. Of course, this wouldn’t be an issue if Funimation wouldn’t have had them on a delay to begin with.. I know it sounds like a broken record, but I really wanted Toonami to be a real destination for new content and a force in the anime industry rather than just getting the scraps left over from streaming. I think that if streaming isn’t stopping for “holidays” than Toonami shouldn’t either. It just makes them seem more of a relic of the past They really need to get that by doing this stuff, they can lose potential audience who may jump over to the stream. And honestly, they may not want to pay for Funimation, but that’s not where people go. Is Toonami really content just being for the people who don’t know better or don’t care? Maybe they are. Maybe the block isn’t for people like me anymore. Obviously it holds an important place in my fandom and it’s hard to let it go, but it’s hard to justify staying behind when the shows are right there and streaming doesn’t break for the holidays

I’ve seen people beg for marathons because they are worried that the block will take a ratings hit. It’s not like it effects their advertising revenue lol. Same for reruns “It’s a waste to run a show at 3:30, they should do a rerun.” I’m like, who cares it’s on! I think it’s a side effect of caring more about how the block does than actually enjoying it. I can see if you want to skip something like Rick and Morty because you can’t watch that ahead somewhere else and there’s MILLIONS of viewers at stake , but when it’s anime that is barely doing 500k what are you risking? We’ve seen holiday weeks do ok with the regular lineup. You don’t want the people to abandon the airing. I did for Clover. It started 3 episodes behind and now it’s more than 10.

This is a left over idea from TV execs who still think people would actually miss their shows because they are at Grandmas house. Live viewers have been down regardless and we are at the point where the opening of the block only does (400 k/ 0.2). We have DVR, OnDemand, and the website. Plus you have 5 of your shows readily available online dubbed from other sources- do we want to give them a reason to jump ship and go there . People will find a way to watch. We were in New York last year and watched shows in our hotel. This idea that people abandon things they are watching because “holidays” means less when people don’t really watch live anyway

That’s what I don’t get, even things that seem to have been negotiated ahead of time don’t get announced until the last minute unless it’s at a con. We have done confirmation of this when it Epcar leaked the Lupin news a month before Momocon where they intended to announce it. Some of these shows that just started in Japan I get needing some extra clearance but still I don’t see why this stuff isn’t worked out with Funimation while a show is being licensed. ”Hey Toonami we are getting this show you might be into this is the concept..interested in airing it?” I think part of the answer is the Japanese side AND then wanting to actually watch an episode or 2 before getting it. ASA did announce things months ahead of time. Upfront would lay out acquisitions for the rest of the year. But of course we didn’t have simuldubs so they had the benefit of having access to the whole show before buying it

I get that. But what I can’t stand, and I feel like I can say this here without getting blasted, is that Funimation purposely pulls this crap to protect their streaming service. They won’t let Toonami announce something until a few weeks after it starts. I understand if Toonami has to wait a few weeks, but allow the viewer to make an informed choice. I started Fire Force and Dr. Stone on FN only for them to be the blocks next show.

What’s funny is that this was planned as far back as August when they decided where to start the season 3 reruns. To me, moving it to the back (and at 10:30) at first seemed more of a way to get it out of the way while the awkward 2 month gap between seasons happened. Originally, the plan was to probably to keep it at 10:30 until season 3 ended, then do the reruns at 4 while cutting the 10:30 slot. The intention was always to get the show out of the way of the other shows to stop multiple schedule shuffles and because they probably didn’t know exactly when they could get the dub on air. But it probably didn’t do what a 10:30 show should and they moved it to the other “out of the way slot”. Hence the “Enough people didn’t watch it where it was” explanation and also the “I’m sure it’ll move back up again at some point”. They always knew they were going to do this. What I’ll never understand is why they can never be upfront about their plans until the last minute. It would e cleared up a lot of confusion

It has to be MHA. Although it could be Mob but I can’t see the huge delay in announcing it.

That’s partly why I consider FunimationNow a main Toonami competitor. They’ll always prioritize it over letting the block dub premeire anything. But regardless they should make an announcement before the season airs whether or not they are getting it. Otherwise I see no reason why anyone who is interested in the show to wait around

I’m talking more about things that are fully available and complete, not stuff that may be a little ahead on streaming. With that, you still are kind of getting fresh content. But with a show like SH, it’s been done and you could go watch the whole thing. I just think they are better getting current season stuff. Even airing the dub when the sub has been done for awhile (Jojo, HxH) doesn’t yield good results. Demon Slayer will have a bit of this problem as well

Lets not waste a slot on a show that’s fully available dubbed online for free.

It's not really that big of a deal, they just double up on something they do have a dub of- Dr. Stone. I don't think we should intentionally stay behind if we can help it

At the end of the day, I think they are trying to stay current and not fall further behind the simulcasts. If they have to take a little hit on the 4th of July, so be it. The long game is what’s important. We can’t do things the old way anymore

I think it’s going to be a matter of knowing about certain shows and making deals before Funimation announces a streaming date. They also can’t keep up with FN if they have a day and date release with the sub because delays will happen. I don’t like though when Funimation forces us to stay behind, but that’s the best we can do to get their shows

I know, this is beyond dumb. They should've just put the schedule out last week with a TBD at midnight. It's not a bad thing to say a new show is coming at that timeslot- at least then you don't risk the whole nights DVR recordings being screwed up. I don't think a marathon is happening- they would've said something by now since that's not really a big "secret" like a new show is. If they spring that on us a week out- it's really going to piss people off (not that they care )

I think we’ll be fine without Super since it’s such an outlier, but AS may need to move FG to 11 if they want to stay competitive in that time slot

Yeah I think they stand to lose more from a show like Squidbillies that they invest a lot in. Whereas if it was a newer show like the Jellies, Lazur Wolf, or Joe Pera, they’ll run it on s holiday weekend. One clue is that certain shows they’ll stream for free the Friday before and some they won’t. The biggest shows (Tyson, Robot Chicken, Rick and Morty) will not stream ahead and will usually take off holiday weekends. Plus the comedy crowd is more casual about their watching. Also, they have a set date for Robot Chicken and they need to make that line up. In the case of Toonami, the viewership is more steady and people are less likely to skip out because “holidays”. Plus we’ve whittled down viewership to such a low degree that the risk is less. Hiatuses will now more or less be used to position things where they need to be

Yeah, I’m going with that as well. The only reason we are a week out with announcements is because of deals closing last minute. If they were having a marathon, that would’ve been announced by now
