Fire Force S2 Debuts October 24th on Toonami
brianycpht replied to CountFrylock's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I asked Demarco on Twitter yesterday and he said there’s still complicated legal issues with it that refuse to get worked out. Since he’s openly talking about it, I wouldn’t count on it anytime soon -
What's Toonami gonna air on Independence Day (July 4th)?
brianycpht replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
It's almost no risk to them, but if they have a new show in mind to replace MHA, I don't think we'll see it until the 11th. We may do another fan favorite MHA (maybe the 2nd place episode). Or maybe take it a step further and do a modern "Power to the People" where they can pick any episode of any show from a list -

Zap2it currently has the normal lineup (with episode titles) scheduled, as does TV Guide. On TV Guide, it lists MHA at midnight with a generic series description. This doesn’t mean it’s rerunning, but that they don’t have any data for the spot and it’s a template for what has usually aired there. I figured it would have an episode listed if it was, but it could very well be another “what’s your favorite episode” deals. My reasoning behind this is that while the 4th might be fine and not so risky to run this normal, rerun heavy lineup, STARTING a new show at the top of the block wouldn’t be the best idea. The 11th is also the earliest we might get Jojo back so having a new show at midnight plus the return of Jojo would be a good start to July. The lack of a marathon announcement today makes me even more confident we aren’t getting one -

I think the main point of contention is that before current events, they were already in a cutback phase and this is the longest the block has ever gone without a fresh show that wasn’t a sequel. Many on this board don’t consider PA a “premeire” because we watched it on ASA and if that was our last chance for a new show for awhile, I can’t blame some for being disappointed- despite the quality of the program. Clover and Naruto have their detractors so also and may not even watch them (me for instance). I do wonder how much of the backlash is the dissatisfaction over the lack of new or the fear that ratings are going to suffer leading to more cuts. If it’s the latter, I’d stress that it’s more important that the block be something you enjoy over a constant fear over its potential demise. -
They’ll try it anyway I’m sure, it’s worked out so well for them before. But with MHA potentially not being replaced and the block leading with 3 reruns, it will feel rather stale. Without fresh stuff up front, it won’t give people a reason to stick around for the new stuff. I don’t know what they are going to do, but theyl really should try and get a back catalog show from Funimation or Crunchyroll. I know they are picky about the lead slot, but trying something new is better than just leaving MHA in reruns. What were they going to do had COVID not happened? I think the only thing that threw them for a loop was Food Wars not being able to continue. I think negotiations didn’t happen in time to get season 3, so they got Mob on to take the 1am slot and just brought Paranoia Agent (which was intended to replace Demon at 12:30) out a few weeks early. I can’t see Mob at 1am as anything other than a temporary fix to plug a hole they didn’t know they’d have to fill. I’m also hoping they still had a deal on and this wasn’t something they chose to acquire over a fresh title. I want to believe good things are coming, but nothing that’s happened this year (even before COVID) has been good news in terms of fresh acquisitions. 5 premiere slots lost (6 depending on how you view PA) since the beginning of the year and them also not replacing MHA leads me to believe it’s money related and what we had coming was mostly sequels that may not happen this year. So I’m hoping they actually have plans to replace MHA. They were always going to have to anyway between seasons

That’s what bothers me, if they put time and money into picking up Mob again (assuming it just wasn’t still under contract), they could’ve just as well made a deal for another show they’ve never aired before. I don’t know if it was a deal of “We like Mob so let’s get it again!”. If that was the deal (same with PA), it’s a little bothersome that they just go for things that they either like, like the creator, have aired before or know it’s the newest Shonen. There’s a ton of catalog titles they never aired that they could potentially air right now with nothing new coming out. If they could make new deals for those shows- why not something new? -

I do feel like they do need some new people to help curate some content for the block. I think it can only make the block better -

Do you think he actually is fighting them because he feels like if he gives an inch, they'll just take over? I personally am hoping that they eventually try and have some synergy between CR and Toonami. In fact, . I'm all for them sort of attaching their brand to the block in some way First, I'd like CR to eventually fold itself into HBOMAX so its all in one place I would like the the block to have some CR dubs that air on Toonami first and go to HBOMAX right after. I'd like them to be a main force in programming the block to bring in some fresh ideas. The block can open with a popular Viz or Funimation title (Bleach, DB, or MHA) to bring in a crowd, followed by some CR titles, and the usual Black Clover/Naruto ending. I feel like both brands have something to offer and be mutually benefitial to each other -

I’m going to be honest- I really don’t like the direction of the block. The lack of anything new even before the current situation just makes it kind of blah with nothing really to look toward to either. Even without COVID-19, it didn’t seem like they had much lined up this year. I figured if they got down to 3 hours of premeires with an equal mix of long and short runners, that would be good, but now instead of cutting slots, reruns are replacing premiers. If they don’t get a new show for MHA, that’ll be it for the summer. I was hoping we’d get more catalog titles to keep things semi fresh, but this is making me lose faith in them -

So are you shifting now more towards using Kai as the base and just replacing certain characters. I’ve been spot checking the original episodes and have been suprised how characters like Vegeta and Krillin go back and forth between the Z and Kai dubs. How do you choose which version to use?- 52 replies

They are essentially showing a month old rerun of it. Considering they were handing out coupons for a month of Funimation, I bet they’d rather you didn’t know it aired on Toonami. They are more than happy to take a check from Toonami though to air it on a delay I bet a very small percent of people watching in the theater watch it on Toonami. Considering they are airing episodes from 6 weeks ago, most fans of the show probably even abandoned the simuldub and are watching the sub. Even if we had the premeire, the idea of having to tune in at a specific time is too much for today’s audience and they’d probably stream it anyway

It's February 2015 All Over Again
brianycpht replied to PokeNirvash's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
If Jojo blows up on Netflix, it really does say alot about the trends of modern viewership. The other day, we were walking in the neighborhood and ran into a friend who was a massive Doctor Who fan. She said she hasn't watched the most recent season because its not on Netflix yet (or whatever site it would be on since no season of it is on there). The issue I see lately, and I'm guilty of this too, is that we want our Toonami to be the place we remember. The place where we would turn the TV on a Saturday night and watch the PREMEIRE of a show that we didn't know about before. There was no simulcasts, if the show was dubbed before- DVDs were 25.00 for 3 episodes, and you had to be there when it aired. But we've all evolved in our fandom and anime isn't restricted to TV and bootleg fansubs. If you go and ask what the purpose of the block is today I've come up with a few things 1. Nostalgia for viewers like us. It's comfortable to have these show presented to us by TOM surrounded by all the goodies. We are a loyal passionate audience to say the least, but the audience that has a connection to the original block is aging out of the 18-34 demo little by little every year. They will have to think about how and if they want to market Toonami to a new generation who doesn't want to watch TV or do they shift to targeting the older demographic still. 2. Promotion. I still think anime distributors love to see their shows on the block because it drums up awareness for their shows. In the end, they want to sell you merchandise from these shows and Toonami is one way to get it out there. I will say though that companies like Funimation and Crunchyroll would love to steal you away from your Toonami viewing and bring you to their sites instead. Why else would Funimation force Toonami to wait an additional week for MHA ? CR put ads online telling you to come to their site to watch ALL of the episodes of a show currently airing on the block. I'm worried this is what Warner will do with Toonami- use it as a tool to promote a show already on CR. Companies like Viz and Aniplex are still about the sellling of physical media after broadcast, but we are starting to see Toonami being used as a means to introduce a show to an audience that they will finish it on streaming. I don't understand why people are demanding they air shows that are already available for free dubbed online. I've already seen a few people hoping the CR originals eventually end up on the block. For what purpose would that serve other than to drive traffic to CR? I don't think we necessarily need the block to inform the masses about anime and it should shift to airing originals that air there first. -
Dragon Ball Z: The Ascension Cut
brianycpht replied to MasqueradeOverture's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
It’s probably a good idea to stick with Kai during the scene where Piccolo is wished bask as well (you probably meant this) The scene in the original also features “surfer” Yamaha arguing with Tien about his hair lol, Kai making a phone call joke- it’s one of the worst scenes dub wise. For the sake of proper dialogue and voices, I’d not use any of the original for this. The voice inconsistency with Piccolo was one of the main reasons I hated the OB. How could they even think for a second the original 1999 version flowed well with the rest of the series. I assume you’ll use the Kai Goku in the Freeza saga as well? I never thought of pitch correcting. That’s a good way of fixing it. I’ve been spot checking here and there and your only hurdle will be Nadolys dialogue, but it doesn’t look to me like it should stop you from using Kai Piccolo exclusively- 52 replies

Dragon Ball Z: The Ascension Cut
brianycpht replied to MasqueradeOverture's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I have absolutley loved what i heard so far... I have a few questions/suggestions I see for the most part you are using the 2005 version for the audio. But what I really like is that you subbed in the Kai audio where the line is more accurate to the original. This is done with surgical precision and I had to look at both to tell what’s what. Truly great work The actors are all on point here. I assume once we get to the end of the refund you'll use the Kai performances instead of the 1999 dub. The partial redub of the bricks makes it very strange sounding When we get to the part of the Freeza Saga where Piccolo is revived, it would probably be best to use the Kai audio as much as possible. Piccolo's voice sounds vastly different in the original DBZ than what it sounds like in other parts (including the parts already released) since he was not redubbed at all for the orange bricks. This could be a slight issue if you have him talking to characters who are the original DBZ recordings as the more faithful adaptation of Kai may mean the whole conversation has changed. Sabat's early interpretation is so different it sounds like a different actor all together. This took me out of the show when watching the bricks. Krillin is redubbed up until the middle of a line of episode 94 (....I got a bad feeling about this Gohan). It then switches to the original 1999 dub where it sounds like Sonny is holding his nose shut while speaking. It would probably be best to switch to Kai here as well. Especially since in episode 95 the joke about him wanting to be married is properly translated and his cry out to Goku is "Goku!" as it should be.. This does present a slight issue if you want to do Garlic Jr since no redub of that exists. Those two characters will sound vastly different than at any other point in the series... Using both VAs for Freeza might present a jarring change as the whole interpretation of the character and his manner of speaking is different in both versions. Young is more of a crazy villain and Ayers does the polite eloquent speech thing. But it might still work depending on what lines are kept Anyway, just thought I'd bring this up but you've probably thought of this all already...- 52 replies

I know right? But they had to “wait and see if it was going to stay popular http://toonamifaithful.com/toonamis-hero-academia-will-finally-happen/ That thinking combined with them rather getting established “names” like Gundam, HxH, OPM, and Jojo firmly established MHA as a streaming show. Now I don’t think Funimation will even let them have the dub premeire if they paid Unfortunately, the idea of Toonami making a show popular is a relic of the past. It will never be the the primary source for premeires like it used to

I know they don’t and I think they should because they seem to be ok with second dibs on things, but for a person like me who has access to everything but wants to support the block it’s frustrating. They hardly ever announce a show until its streaming for several weeks. It makes me very weary of starting anything on FN. A lot of people will just not watch the Toonami airing if they’ve already started it elsewhere. In this case, the information that it will air on a delay would be helpful, but they seldom give us that. I actually waited 2 years for MHA. I finally relented and streamed the first season. Then they announced it for the block the next week I’m sure they’ll say that their target is people who don’t stream, but I wish they’d set their sights bigger than that- it’s probably too late though
