Russia is testing Europe. They aren't going to outright attack because they would lose. They're investigating whether the Europeans will stick together or tuck tails and squabble. 

Russia is a dying country, or specifically, ethnic Russians are dying at rates faster than they can replace. They're not in good shape, with the Russian Federal Government having to make more compromises with its non-Russian territories by giving them more autonomy so they can at least claim the appearance of being the world's largest country. They would have totally fallen apart already if it weren't for their nukes and the fatalistic indifference that has been made part of their culture for centuries ... you know, they jst accept anything such as being told Stalin was bad one day and great the next as well as having an elected president one day and a dictator the next.

They'd only lose for sure if we backed NATO like we're supposed to. I think he's testing us to see our reaction as much as he is Europe. I take this as a really bad sign though that suggests Putin feels the war in Ukraine is going well enough for them that he's looking to the future now, and this looks like just more evidence that when the war there ends he's looking to Poland next.
