Easily the biggest mass tragedy to happen to the anime industry since the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami wiped out a good portion of Studio Bridge.

Rest in peace to the deceased, and may the police catch the guy who did it eventually.

They caught him at the scene.  Only ID on him so far is he's 41, no motive yet.  He's one of the injured.  I think there's still about 30 people unaccounted for.  Hopefully they were all taking an early lunch. :/

This is devastating and appalling. Hopefully, the 23 who were confirmed deceased can rest peacefully and the recovery process isn’t arduous for those who made it out of the KyoAni building.

Also there seems to be a discrepancy between news site as to how many are dead.

Not surprising, since they update at different times and it took 5 hours to put out the fire, so police were still finding bodies (which in Japan can't be officially called "dead" until a doctor says so).  Looks like 33 is the final toll (12 men, 20 women, and 1 unknown ::shudder::), unless some of the more severely injured die, which could easily happen, though I hope not.  I have to say I'm dreading finding out who was lost. :/

There's no confirmation that he has mental illness. So stop speculating that.

Well unless he has some history of being abused for years by the company and his coworkers I think it's safe to say he was mentally ill.

He's not a disgruntled former employee. The articles stated that he's not associated with the company. And until official reports comes out, it's not mental illness.

At least read before assuming such things.

The only thing I'm assuming is that he's mentally ill.

There's pretty much two options.

He had a longstanding relationship with the company or someone in the company and it was not a positive relationship.

He's nuts.

Given that they ruled out option 1, I'm gonna go with option 2.

Or you could not and wait for a report saying whether he is or not.

Nah I'll go with the safe bet here. Thanks though.

Updates:

Sentai's gofundme fundraiser is now a third over its intended goal, reaching over one million dollars in under a day!

Some rumors about the guy's intention were made clear. He is a train otaku and KyoAni happened to hold an event at a station that attracted a ton of tourists. Another rumor says he was obsessed with a girl from Hibiki! Euphonium only to discover that she was not a virgin, then ranted on 4chan for a full day before setting the studio on fire.

Some on Twitter are worried that Fire Force, an anime about firefighters, will be affected out of association.

since all the mainstream news sites and most of the Japanese sources have dried up on information for the time being. i've resorted to Reddit for coverage that i couldn't find anywhere else.

The suspect has been named.

41-year-old Shinji Aoba has a history of mental health issues and is currently sedated in the hospital so a formal interview cannot yet be held to get more details.

The director of such anime as K-On, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, and others, is dead.

Gonna need official source of said death. Otherwise it's just rumors.

Their security system happened to be shut down on the day of the attack. They did have one in place, like ID entry, but that day they were expecting news coverage to come and the system was intentionally shut down to eliminate hassle. There was only one fire exit on the first floor where roughly 1/10 of the people were occupying at the time, and the arsonist set fire to the stairway. That, on top of the roof door being permanently locked, transformed the building into an oven.

So yeah, he brought people unrelated to KyoAni into this! There's no certainty as to whether or not he knew they would shut off the security system days prior or if he was just lucky.

Likewise, the scheduled trailors for the upcoming Free! Season 4 have been delayed.  A collaboration with a subway company for another Hibiki! Euphonium event has been plain canceled.

As I understand, all these info has already been covered in the Reddit mega thread. Yasuhiro Takemoto's status is unconfirmed, so please don't believe that. Also, the rooftop door was closed but not locked.

...That "news" was confirmed a mistranslation hours ago. Takemoto's fate's still up in the air at this point.

Nothing is getting cancelled. The event itself (new trailer) is getting cancelled, not the movie or the series.

DB is late to the story. All these other news sources I've read already touched on this. While it did include a few new interviews, it's basically more or less the same perspective but with a DB spin to it.

I've been saying they should air Haruhi for years. But given its age, I think something more recent and somewhat actiony like Beyond the Boundary would be a better fit.

Haruhi doesn't exactly have a ton of action. It DOES have action, but it's rare.

And I could NOT follow Beyond the Boundary!

Not to mention how we gotta deal with Episode 6 ...

Yes but when it does have action it gets it right =P
