I did for a day or two and then my parents told me they were kidding. We were in Alabama in some diner and they had a pic of the Brooklyn Bridge on the wall. The waitress knew right away we were from NY and asked us, “Have y’all ever seen that bridge?” in college I was told by an Australian student that she loved my accent. I looked at her sideways cuz lol, for real? 2

Mesoamerican Spanish (our other native tongue) influences our vowels and some short consonants, but that can disappear quickly depending on who we are talking with. 1

scoobdog Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 No. Spanish words and phrases are used extensively for place names, food staples, and idioms, as occasionally are words from the Mesoamerican languages in historical contexts. Most of us born here learn to use the pronunciation automatically, and without having become fluent. But I am proficient enough to read and understand the more common phrases.

All the women here talk like valley girls, which is not noticeable to people that were born here. It's hilarious. Like when you see a Samoan chick or some other girl that you wouldn't expect that voice from... it's hilarious every time. There are plenty of surfer bros here but not enough that I would say it's common. The dudebro thing can be entertaining to an extent.

In the midwest when you hear that voice it's a teenage girl 90% of the time. But here I get to hear 40 year old women that sound like high school kids all the time. It's great entertainment.

It totally throws off my perception of the person since I often rely on voice to give me some idea who the person is before I actually meet them.

I didn't remember hearing an accent when I was in California, but that was a long time ago. Some places in the country you visit and you're like, "Damn, what did you say?" and others it's not so obvious. Sometimes an accent adjust because of the melding of foreign words into the English language. Sometimes it's an adaptation of a foreign accent, which seems to be the case in the Bronx. In a lot of cases, the accent is influenced to a certain degree by both. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Angelenos all sounded like they were straight out of an episode of Zorro.
