Well, it appears that Family Guy won the night this week, and Toonami did better...

http://programminginsider.com/saturday-final-ratings-pyeongchang-olympics-nbc-nbcsn-streaming-gains-slightly-comparable-night-sochi-games/

Family Guy (ADSM, 10:00 PM, 30 min.)
– 1.205 million viewers
– 0.55 A18-49

Adult Swim PROGRAM Viewers (000) A1849 rating A1849 (000)
10:30 Dragon Ball Super 1039 0.51 662
11:00 Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters 927 0.44 563
11:30 Black Clover 730 0.34 442
12:00a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders 618 0.27 348
12:30a Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans 525 0.26 341
ProgrammingInsider.com
1:00a Hunter X Hunter (r) 501 0.27 345
1:30a Naruto: Shippuden (r) 543 0.27 350
2:00a Outlaw Star (r) 420 0.21 270
2:30a Space Dandy (r) 371 0.18 235
3:00a Cowboy Bebop (r) 395 0.19 248
3:30a Ghost in the Shell: 2nd Gig (r) 360 0.18 227

Averages: 584K total viewers; 366K adults 18-49. Both are the best so far of 2018, but fall WELL short of the 2017 average.

LOL at the Outlaw Star "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" episode that was banned in 2001-2002 getting EXACTLY 420K viewers! And this time Shippuden actually edged out JOJO in 18-49!

People just don't like Dandy much do they? What is it? Too Zany? Too inconsistent? Not funny enough for a comedy and not enough action for a space show?

EXTREMELY inconsistent.  Many episodes are simply not funny or boring.

That's probably because the second season spent more time on artsy fartsy episodes rather than humorous ones. And then there was the High School Musical parody, which angered you so much you almost dropped the show.

I'm pretty sure the musical episode actually made him drop the show, and by the time he got over it and came back, his tune changed so drastically he started claiming that none of the episodes meant anything.

Which is not the dandy way to approach a show like that.

Dandy's fuckin' great, man.

Musical episode was far from the best, but my personal worst is the Cloudian episode. If all the Big Bang Theory memes didn't sour me on the sitcom laugh track as a concept, that episode definitely did it.

UPDATE:

Adult Swim’s late-night line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.50/0.46 compared to last week’s 0.51/0.44, BLACK CLOVER down 0.02 to 0.32, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURES up 0.01 to 0.28, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM up 0.01 to 0.27/558K, HUNTER X HUNTER down 0.03 to 0.24/507K, NARUTO down 0.05 to 0.22/479K, OUTLAW STAR down 0.01 to 0.20/411K, SPACE DANDY down 0.02 to 0.16/351K, COWBOY BEBOP steady at 0.19/367K, and GHOST IN THE SHELL down 0.01 to 0.17/337K.

Average 591K, which is the highest yet in 2018! It should also be noted that the Cable Originals, the first 5 premieres, crossed 800K (809,400) on average for the first time this year as well! Hopefully Toonami just continues to improve from here; it looks like we're on an upward trajectory. Perhaps the fact that viewers are no longer able to catch what they missed 4 weeks later on the free stream made the difference?

Good night, but uhhhh 68 percent for BC. Is that a record low for retention? I've seen plenty of low 70's but I don't remember ever seeing a 60 before.

The important part here is the 18-49 M column. As long as that is a shade of green or yellowish green, then things are good. When that turns yellow or red, that's bad.

Just about everything else is gravy. All five of the shows in the top 50 are in that green to yellowish green, and DBS & DBZ both dominated in terms of share. Toonami did good, room for some improvement certainly, but they did good.

I don't really think the M 18-49 is all that important. It's the 18-34 and M 12-34 that Toonami always seems to excel in! But maybe I'm wrong. Also:

Even more so for the 18-34 and the male categories. That’s how the advertisers know where they should spend their money. Plus with Toonami having the #4 show in prime time with 18-34, that has even more value for the block. If they expand even further into prime time, they have the potential to get even more ad dollars!

I hadn't noticed they had P 18-34 on that chart. I had thought it was P 12-34.

[as] has always targeted 18-34 M, which the chart doesn't have a breakdown for, they have 12-34. In any event, all five of the listed Toonami shows had an above average share on Sat., which is great news.

This is possibly what DeMarco is referencing when he trolls fans and tell them that numbers don't matter as much. He might be referencing market share, and if you are above avg. advertisers will indeed flock to you.

Poke, Jojo still soils. It is kind of like the sun rising in the east, or the ocean being wet, it simply is.... :P

Someone asks “Why did Space Dandy flop?”

Notably the writer is a fan of Dandy, but argues its failure was due to Toonami’s growing irrelevance.

Yeah, but in that argument, he uses an anime phenomenon from 2018 (Devilman Crybaby) to describe why a show from 2014 wasn't more successful. IIRC, the 2014 anime streaming scene was dominated by Neon Alley around the time that Space Dandy came out, and then Hulu continued with that trend. Netflix wasn't the ubiquitous monster it is today, so Toonami was actually MORE relevant in 2014 than it is today. I daresay its relevance was GROWING at the time then peaked (on adult swim) in 2015 before beginning to ebb in 2016, a trend which continues today. Attack on Titan may have streamed on all major platforms with subtitles, but the fact that its long-awaited (like for a year) dub premiere was on Toonami was huge and cemented its relevance in that age. The thing that hurt the 2nd cour of Space Dandy the most was not Toonami's growing irrelevance, but the fact that AOT was king and Bleach directly followed it, that it was, after all, STILL a World Premiere and got stuck behind lame-duck Bleach's worst canon arc was a miscalculation!

Damn, Dandy took a big drop after Outlaw Star, lost to Bebop, and had lower 18 -48 than Ghost. Doh.

Dandy has the same problem literally EVERYTHING aired at 2:30 AM has--NO benefit of delayed viewing in Live+SD. Also, these episodes have already been run quite a few times, even if 3 years and change ago. This is their 4th airing each (plus numerous online streams), as many as 5th each when we get to Episodes 12 and 13. However, beyond that it will only be their 2nd airing each so hopefully that gives the numbers a bit of a boost.

Toonami wasn't irrelevant in 2014. Back then, the streaming-centric market that envelops us today hadn't really developed. Netflix wasn't known for original content outside of House of Cards and the revival of Arrested Development, and most of the other companies hadn't even started with that. Crunchyroll wasn't in vogue yet (and very far off from producing their own shows), but it was around and somewhat popular.

I find the Neon Alley reference to be interesting... and kind of hilarious. The fact that they were a streaming service set up like a linear TV channel is just a special kind of incompetence, even if they did have some on-demand offerings. I actually watched a few episodes of the Madoka Magica dub there back in late 2013, albeit mostly through the latter method.

How many times has Bebop aired like 20? It still lost to it.

This is such a big deal and proves Toonami (or at least DBS) can survive in prime time (which I’m sure commands a higher advertising rate than late night ). Super has actually been #2 and at one point as well. AS as a whole is doing really well there too! Can something else survive there as well? We’ll see!

Apparently Dragon Ball Super's social media buzz is more volatile than its viewership:

What the hell happened to the 64K+ people on 3/10 who were discussing DBS on Facebook on 3/3!? Either way, I think adding Instagram really hurt DBS because people just don't talk DBS on IG!

Oh, so that's what it was?

I feared that might be the TRUE social media aspect of Dragon Ball Super, not its dubs on Toonami!

Well, at least its ratings stayed decent this week:

Will Gundam IBO reach over 600K in 2018 before it finishes? It's getting close! Those are new yearly highs for JoJo and Gundam! Slight decrease in total viewer ratings during "the sweet spot" but a 0.02 average gain in both demos!

I would hope for something hot enough to air before Super, but I guess that's not possible. If the new show is even remotely popular I bet it bumps BC down since it's established itself as quite the ratings turkey.
