Mass Casualty Aircraft Collision Thread

So like, first question, why the goddamn fuck is the military doing ANY sort of training flight in the near vicinity of one of the busiest airspaces in the country? What, you don't own bases in enough swaths of Bumbefuck Nowhere?

Of course he did. You just knew he couldn't let a horrific tragedy that should be a unifying moment for the country go by without trying to inject his usual brand of bullshit, racist, conspiratorial, toxic, finger-pointing nonsense into it. I mean, you hope just one damn time some depth would be even too low for someone like him to stoop to, but if there is one consistent thing about him it's that he never fails to limbo beneath the bar of our most base expectations.

Anyway, just saw there were a bunch of young figure skaters aboard the flight. Was watching Nancy Kerrigan and some other top figures in the sport talking about it. They were in tears. :( It's looking like they pretty much given up hope of there being any survivors. Damn.

It's actually very common. They own a lot of land to fly over, which is where they practice bombing and such.

Pilots still need to get experience flying in commercial air space and using commercial airports. There is a special on youtube, let me try to find it real quick where they go in the cockpit with pilots taking trainees in jets from Nevada to refuel at LAX and San Francisco just to get them time in high traffic areas.

*I cannot find it any longer :(

That being said, I still get shocked by these incidents. I know everyone wants to point fingers, but I feel like when two large aircraft collide, everyone is a little at fault.  Granted, in this case a black hawk is going to be very hard to see at night, but in the other instances of near misses we've been having on runways, how do the pilots not see these large objects in their paths? I know there's a lot going on in the cockpit button wise and comms wise, but when you have multiple lives in the cabin behind you depending on you to get them to their location, your head should be on a damn swivel.

the bird was supposed to fly at or below 200ft. and as the sen. also stated, they only had a 3 man crew. should absolutely have had a 5 man/2 flight chiefs.

she mentioned night vision goggles, which begs the question, if this was a training excercise, that the above applies, and finally, sen. noted that there was a plane preparing for takeoff, and when the tower asked the bird if they had a visual, they should have confirmed the visual in question (at their 5 or at there 9).

the video is horrific. i'm not linking it. it's....horrible.

The news is showing the crash on repeat...I'm like wtf, really...don't y'all usually censor shit like this.

It's weird because I've seen this exact shit in movies so many times to no reaction...but knowing this shit ain't fake, it's like I got legit sad for all of those people. What do you even think in that split second if you're one of the unassuming

It's how they maintain views when they don't have answers

9/11 was way worse

They aired the same footage all day, and then after that it almost became race for the networks to see who could find the most gruesome footage they had scanned over in the heat of the moment and focus on all that. Thus, the endless days of the News showing people jumping out of the towers at close up views, and then all the cell phone calls and messages to loved ones they could get their hands on. I know to some it feels right, and to others it provides comfort in times of confusion and chaos; which is totally fine. I just feel like after they break a story and get the details out they could just move on until more comes out, it just feels they're exploiting someone's final moments.

For a small plane, it sure made one huge fireball. It went down only like around 30 seconds after taking off, so it had a full load of fuel aboard. That and it went down at a pretty steep angle and at high speed with its engines still going, so seems it wasn't any type of engine failure but some type of catastrophic loss of control that may have led to it going down.

Supposedly it was Lear Jet, so it wouldn’t be that small of a plane.

Yeah, the local stations were on it for hours straight. It crashed right next to an incredibly busy intersection in the city. Some of the doorbell and dashcam footage out there is horrifying.

media is a garbage pit most days. this is no exception.

i remember many moons ago, while in cali, i got the girls home, got them settled with cartoons, i'm in the kitchen i hear breaking news.

fox news, showing video on repeat of a man shooting his dog, then himself on an over pass.

over, and over. i think fox got reemed for that in fines? or nothing...because media.

perhaps relative to the previous crash?

Learjet, depending on the model carries up to nine people.  Way less than even a smaller commercial airplane.

My sole hope at this point is that Murdoch croaks soon since his liberal kids won the lawsuit in December.  Just imagine the idea of those two essentially snapping off the conservative firehose.

.....just in the vein of honesty....my news app where I found out about this said small plane crashed hear Philly.

I don’t think the size is of much importance in this case.  I brought it up because it bring a jet would explain why it disintegrated the way it did on impact as well as the sheer amount of fires at the crash site.

Reports are coming in saying the helicopter was told about the airplane 2 minutes before they collided

https://nypost.com/2025/02/01/us-news/army-helicopter-was-warned-about-plane-two-minutes-before-dc-crash/?utm_campaign=iphone_nyp&utm_source=pasteboard_app

shit is getting weird because the chopper had plenty of time to avoid the airliner but they think there might’ve been something else in the helicopter’s line of sight. No one knows what it was only that it wasn’t the plane in question but possibly a different plane

Plane from Minneapolis landed in Toronto, upside down... without its wings. :extremeindifferent: Somehow nobody died but a number of people were injured. The world really is getting turned on its head. Hard not to see this as like a symbolic message of some sort.
