Massive IT outage affecting communications and airlines worldwide

I thought I had had a stroke this morning. I was up by 5:30a, turned on the news and an episode of 'the Flintstones' was on. I honestly thought I had slept an entire day and no one had called to check on me. Turns out some of the basic channels had 'died' and they just re-connected to MeTV instead of leaving everyone with static.

Tator-fone lives on because its a potato. Unfortunately, all the work systems run on the tortured souls of hamsters and customer complaints so I had a full day of work to look forward to.

Yeah.. couldn't tell if it felt like a good thing that at least their systems were robust enough to handle the problem.. or if their systems are simply too obsolete to have noticed anything was happening.

I got lucky yesterday & had enough work saved locally to my laptop at work.  We had no connection to our data storage partner (we're trying to wean ourselves away from them, but will never be able to do so completely).  Even if we did, they were unable to process all the incoming data.  I think they finished compiling tables around 6:30 pm, long after I'd left for the day.

I think the problems actually started around 6 pm Thursday.  People were up in arms on reddit because a specific app kept crashing/wouldn't stay open.  I went to Downdetector and saw there was a number of sites having issues at the same time, but it could have been a coincidence.

BTW - I could not believe the people going to IT, asking for an ETR.

Person A: gets told by the IT manager that they have "no idea" when things might come back up.  He tells Person B.

Person B: tells IT that he knows what they told Person A, but wants to know what the ETR might be - like "I know what you told him, but you can tell me the real answer".

Person C: "I know what you told A & B, but..."

Like our IT had the real answer, but would only tell "special people".

From what I understand there was an unrelated issue with Microsoft's Azure servers on Thursday afternoon. I was having issues with a game using an Xbox login around that time.

(Sorry about the spare quote box, I can't lose it on mobile.)
