So I'm just going to talk about something kinda randomly and there WILL be rambling

See, the thing i like about Anime is there is always usually a character who isn't inherently "bad" but enough of a dick that he's generally hated....People call them anti-heroes, but i don't think that's the case....I think they are just dicks.

Vegeta....Massive dick.  Will he ever be great, no, he won't....He'll always fall short of Goku, but goddamn he's a fucking boss.

Alexander Anderson.....I mean, never have i respected a religious nutjob so much.....That motherfucker was hard to stop.  Even Walter didn't put up the fight he did.

Kaiba......Look, you got to love his delusion.  Even Vegeta deep down knows he's not the best, but Kaiba....That dude will NOT accept that he's 2 tier trash

Bakugo.....Here's the thing about Bakugo.  His arrogance is merely a facade.  Dude is so broken and weakened internally, but you'd never know it if it weren't for the narration of the story.

....Now this is iffy....Mugen and Jin.....Not really the same dynamic of the others, since either can take the role of what's being spoken about here.....In a world of clear cut winners and losers, this is a pretty tough call as to which is actually the weaker character.

Kuwabara....LOL

Sasuke....Seriously, I'm no Naruto fanboy at all.....But isn't Sasuke borderline better tha Naruto?.....I need outside influence.

...Wh....what?

You know what trope I'm getting tired of? The asshole that sacrifices his life in the end so everyone can live. Like that never happens, assholes are just assholes. Like Clint Eastwood excusing his racism because he fictionally sacrifices his life in Gran Torino. Like that movie was him saying nothing but racial slurs.

Same thing as Iron Man arresting his friends and splitting up the Avengers but it's ok cause he sacrificed his life even though that may not had been the outcome if they had worked together in the beginning. But at least they are getting rid of Robert Downey Jr. from the MCU lol.

Or in any form that trope manifest, I much appreciate a character that has to make things up the hard way and really change character in order to be better.

Sasuke is better than Naruto on his own merits.  But Naruto got all kinds of help from every quarter, including the 9-Tails.  How you gonna compete with that?  It's like Naruto got a full scholarship to Harvard while Sasuke had to work 3 jobs to pay his way through DeVry.  Since they are still nearly equals in battle, I'd say Sasuke is the better man.  Even if he is all emo.

Ok, thanks for filling in that blank for me...My Naruto is strictly pedestrian.

.....Dare i ask which you refer to?

Because i can think of 3 pretty awesome ones, and that's excluding the obvious DBZ.

DBZ. I don’t consider YuGiOh active since LK keeps going on hiatus. There’s a YYH redub but it’s not an abridged series that’s good.

I saw a YYH abridged series....It has one of my favorite lines.  I doubt there is a clip with just that line but now i shall go check

Saitama from one punch man, his overpowering apathy is just legendary. (Unless there is a sale at the grocery store.)

I just love his character for this reason.

There is a new anime that just started. Hulu has it. The overly cautious hero. The "hero" destroys towns and kills the citizens he's supposed to protect. It's a comedy. You should check it out.

Ah, I will.....I'll look for it after we go eat....I need a new anime and this sounds like it's up my alley.

Popular anime are usually tripping over themselves to make sure that the dickish character isn't enough of a dick to betray the main character permanently. And if they do, then they're painted as absolutely irredeemable  like Griffith, Aizen, or Kirei Kotomine. Light Yagami counts in the beginning, but by the half-way point, you end up rooting against him because at that point, he becomes a full on villain.

I think the only shows I've seen where the anti-heroes aren't just douchebags on a hero squad are ones like Black Lagoon or Jormungand where the protagonists are hired killers and gun dealers, and don't make anything they’re doing sound noble or for a greater good.

Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero had been too far gone as well despite the sympathy you can feel for being roped into doing some seedy jobs in spite of his fruitless hero complex.

Lupin the 3rd's the oldest one because it's entertaining to see how his robberies and heists unfold.

I think Sasuke is stronger than Naruto but Sasuke also got the benefit of significant plot armor just like Naruto. He doesn't have the benefit of the tailed beasts but he's got all the potential of having all the visual prowess of the Uchihas, help from Orochimaru and Itachi. He even gets the rinnegan. Hell even Naruto and the kages help Sasuke by not going after him seriously. When he tried to take Killer Bee on and got his dick knocked in the dirt, he could've been ended right there. If anything, Id say Sasuke got into Harvard on an academic scholarship and merit for being a minority but he's not paying his own way with 3 jobs. If anybody paying their way through college with 3 jobs its Rock Lee lol

Plus. I blame the 3rd Hokage for all the shit with Naruto and Sasuke. He was just like .... fuck them orphans

I think its clear Bakugo's attitude comes from his insecurities but Im kinda glad they let him cry after Allmight's fight with All for One. I swear I would've beat the shit out of him for telling that kid to kill himself

..... but then I might be a villain

Dragonball has some of the most boring characters of any anime, which is saying a lot. Goku is so fucking stupid and falls ass backwards into victory half the time. Vegeta is one of the only actual characters in the entire series.

As for anti-heroes, I always enjoyed characters like Wolfwood in Trigun and Hilda in Outlaw Star. Wolfwood is arguably inherently good, but he's affiliated with bad people and is not necessarily going about his business in the purest methods. Hilda is more of a no nonsense character. She's not really a good person and is literally an outlaw. However, she pushes those around her in a positive direction by any means, which makes her come off as an aggressive asshole. But without her, the protagonist, Gene, would not have gotten as far as he did, and she acts as a catalyst for him to finally grow as a person.

I'd say Hilda and Wolfwood are generally good, they just have their own moral code in certain aspects. They'll threaten innocent life but they won't take it. They seem like those vendetta type characters, they're experienced and seem to have a motivation left to be imagined. I can't remember Wolfwood's goal beyond saving children, but Hilda definitely had it out for the Kei pirates. I think there was even a point Gene asked and she said, "They took something from me," looking sadly or in a sad way. It was a way that made me feel like it was a person taken from her. Maybe it's that trope where Gene reminded her of who she lost? Cause she really had no reason to take Gene along, she could have called someone she trusted after retrieving Melfina.

I really like Outlaw Star. Even the fan service episode is good.

I love Outlaw Star. Its my favorite anime of all time. Hilda is my favorite character from the show, too. She's fairly enigmatic so we don't get to learn too much about her past which I think works in her favor. But I really enjoyed her forcing Gene forward in his story. She didn't have to, like you said, but it says something about her that she even bothered.

So, is Monster's Johan an anti-hero, just a dick, or pure, satanic evil?  I think maybe a little of all three.

He's a master manipulator, seems able to walk through fire and disappear without a trace, kills a ton of people, but most of them deserved it.  There's some vague hints of supernatural shenanigans going on too, so maybe he was possessed.

But he was also the victim of his crazy mother, who in turn was a victim of crazy fascists, who also totally messed him up too.  And he tried to protect his sister.  And he liked Tenma, though having Johan like you isn't necessarily a good thing.  I think he genuinely cared about children, but was equally able to run his own experiments on them, trying to gain insight into himself.

After all this time, I still don't quite know what to make of him.  :)
