Ginguy
You have to X-ray it to determine optimal sugar content before harvesting.
SwimModSponges
MY folks grow watermelon. Like most plants, it likes dirt, water, and sunlight.

They xray them in Japan to try to produce seedless watermelon. I think they also measure sugar content that way, but don't hold me to it. Honestly I just wanted to see if Viper would try to hax up an X-ray machine from a YT vid to try and get a l33t watermelon.
katt_goddess
All I know is that we'd plant them in the shade on the edge of the woods leading to the swamp where'd they'd get both soft soil, moisture without too much moisture, and morning light that would fade by noon so they wouldn't get too hot. There are probably wild watermelons roaming free in random spots in the swamp by now.

SlappyKincaid
I learned from a food show on netflix that watermelons are the sluts of the plant world and can and will crossbreed with anything resembling a squash or melon type plant, like KN said. So just an fyi that your melons are likely to be .... strange although looking for information to post here is telling me otherwise, so I don't know what to believe anymore Edited July 2, 2018 by SlappyKincaid

Yeah, we learned this when I was 8 or 9, my mom grew pumpkins next to summer squash and watermelons and all 3 came out mangled hybrids of eachother. Chapinator_X
I don't think I've been able to grow watermelon, or at least my attempts when I was younger never panned out similarly to when I attempted to grow pineapple. Mangos and avocados are simple enough, but anything that doesn't involve a pot or a tree has a complicated time.
