I saw somebody on the bus who had a cool sense of style.

What do I do? Do I talk to them?

No, I write two drafts of a note and come to the conclusion the note below was the better of the two:

Hello! I like your style! I’m sorry if it’s weird to receive notes from a stranger on a bus quietly, but I feel the purple shoes and red pants need to be acknowledged in a positive way. I hope the rest of your evening is splendid. :)

But eventually, because I realize I’ve elaborated on the weirdness of receiving a note from a stranger on public transportation, I say to myself “Fuck it, I’ll just tell this person how cool I think their style is when we get off the bus.”

Problem is, I forget about the stop before the final destination, so they get up and prepare to leave. In a panic to tell them how I think of their clothes, I quickly mutter “Excuse me” and try to pass the note.

They give the note a look. And I mean A LOOK

And suddenly I lose any bravery I have to talk to a stranger. I stutter to explain, because they’re getting off the bus and moving away toward the exit. I hastily exclaim, “I LIKE YOUR PANTS. AND YOUR SHOES”

They say thanks, but now all I can do is worry I’ve weirded a person out, and because I’m me, I think about the possibility they might see me either at my jobs or walking along downtown and be like “That’s the freak who tried to hand me a note on the bus!” and do what they can to avoid me.

Long story short, I’m mortified that my attempt to be kind to a stranger was received as something quite opposite. :(

Dude, you probably made his day, after the initial shock wore off.  He obviously works hard at his appearance, and took it as a compliment.  Maybe you'll see him again!  Then just go talk to him.

I don't know what their gender was, but I hope so.

I also hope I never see them again, just to spare myself the embarrassment

yeah, i get it.

i actually will walk up to people and tell them whatever it is i'm admiring, and walk on off.

i mortify family members, but in this late in the game, no phuqs are given, to say something

positive to someone.

except this one time, i saw a woman weeping in a story, and i went over to see if she was alright,

and she was so rude, and miserable, i said, 'whelp, hope your day gets better before you encounter anyone else'

and left.

so, i would say the % of good reaction outweighs the negative.

tl:dr~i'm sure it wasn't as weird as you thought, and made that person's day a little brighter.

Oh come on dude, if you see him again it's the perfect chance to say hi.  Instant conversation starter.  Confidence is key, stroll right up like he's lucky to have a shot at talking to you.

$45 is a monthly pass in atlanta.....What swanky ass city does he live in

In the bay area, $40 is either a round trip or a day pass (I don't live there so I don't know which it is; my brother does, and we recently took a train from Campbell to SF and back when i visited him).

But I don't know where Bouvre lives.

That defeats the purpose of public transportation....I can rent a car for $40 a day

I can't find anything that says this. Some appear to be distance-based or charge for transfers [fucking stupid as that is], but the fares I've found are nowhere near $40/day.

Albeit, never been there so never taken that transit system.

Amtrak in Washington state. It was also memorial day weekend, and last minute tickets.

This is one hundred miles of travel, one way, but I spent half with about the same distance back East.

Yeah, Amtrak isn't really what I think of as public transit. I'm thinking local systems, not 100+ miles.

I was too....Amtrak is a game changer....In fact, I'd almost say that's pretty reasonable for Amtrak

Yeah I was doing a long haul of transfers, so I can see where my experience clouded the context.

You should try being homeless. If you want any kick-downs you gotta learn real quick to be jovial and magnanimous. When I give compliments, or when I'm playing music, I'm not worrying about what other people think of me, I'm thinking about how they feel about themselves because when you don't have much, it's easier to appreciate that kind of thing when it comes your way.

Not everyone who suffers learns from it... and it's not about one upping anyone or anything like that. People-ing is not a competition. I was hoping to provide some context for a different frame of reference is all. ;P

Ok, so you dress on the unusual side of fashion, let's say.

When it get's right down to it, what do you have to lose?  Go at it from a low-risk position.  Just say hello, give him a compliment, and see what happens.

You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Stop being a pussy.
