The Barbara Bush obituary

1938 Packard

Recommended Posts

CBS News had erroneously posted the obituary of former first lady Barbara Bush.

Radio host Harry Hurley stated that the obituary, as published before retraction, included quotes from Bush family members such as, "She died peacefully at home."

It's one thing to post a news article in error, but where did CBS get the quotes on an event that didn't take place?

See how some news sources just make shit up?

Are you aware that people exist who are less educated people and who can't grasp that valuable complex things exist which requiring specialized knowledge, and that those less educated people being unaware of the existence of such things automatically and wrongly assume that their specialists are fakes?

How did they write the family quotes in advance?

HERE ARE THE FIRST LINES OF THE STORY:

The first lines of the story read, “Barbara Bush, the witty, gregarious matriarch of a political dynasty that propelled two of its members to the White House and dominated Republican politics for decades, has died after a series of recent hospitalizations. She was 92. A Bush family spokesman said Bush passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by loved ones.”

first of all, its not a direct quote. It's a paraphrasing of a simple communication.

second, here is the quote they've already received:

"She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving,” the statement from the office of George H. W. Bush, who was president from 1989-1993, read.

so you see, if they get a status update that she croaks in bed, it will be exactly that. A spokesperson said that she died peacefully in her home, surrounded by loved ones. If anything changes, like godzilla stomps on her instead, then they can change it. BUT ODDS ARE SHES GOING TO PASS PEACEFULLY AT HOME SURROUNDED BY LOVED ONES SO THAT IS THE PREPARED STORY WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY STANDARD FARE PREPARATION IN JOURNALISM.

Do you now understand the relevance of my previous post in this thread?

Also journalism is reporting on events as they take place, not forecasting them.

So, you're saying journalists are supposed to report forecasts instead of facts?

Here's an idea for you to consider.  When old people start to get really old, sometimes they have their obits written ahead of time, especially when they know they aren't going to be around much longer.  And when it's famous people, they distribute these to various news outlets so that the news can get out because the public likes to know these things.

If she died in a skydiving accident, they'd change that line.  If she died screaming and convulsing, they'd still probably say "she died peacefully in her sleep" because that's really none of our fucking business.

Nixon had a speech pre-written in case astronauts died on the moon, is that the same as just "making shit up", or is it being prepared for a likely possible outcome?

News networks write stories like these ahead of time so they can among  the first to publish them.
This is nothing new.  The only newsworthy thing about this instance is that was accidentally released.

That's just how they work.   They  had no intention  of releasing  that to the public before she died.

The Packard obituary:

Smelly old guy died. Nobody cared enough to comment.

His tombstone reads 'Smoke doesn't have a smell' .

You can find it by looking for the only tombstone in the area covered in those pine tree shaped car fresheners.

It was a tragic science experiment. He removed the batteries from his fire detector and set the apartment on fire to test the scent of smoke.

Alas, his apartment already smelled like smoke and without a detector there's no way he could've known about the fire he set.
