This was a strange night for Kai, which doesn't usualy retain Super that well. Black Clover got a little lift as a result, every week its audience is growing. I think the block is on an upswing and the gains will gradually go deeper into the block as the weeks go on. The holidays may throw things off when we come back in January, but Super is getting alot of buzz because of a certain special guest star VA in the next episode. If Funimation and Toonami keep up the promotion, we could get more people than average tuning in for it on January 6th! I hope Super beat Family Guy again!

The drop going into Jojo and beyond does make me wonder how HxH and Shipuden faired. I feel like Hunter in particular is being wasted at 1:00 and would work well following Black Clover.

Poor Lupin, but he's almost finished his run and I'm glad he got another shot on TV! Who knows though, depending on what kind of deal they got with TMS/Discotek, it may have done what was expected of it!

If there's any time Hunter X Hunter should be pushed earlier in the block, it should be now.

ShowBuzzDaily updated, so now we know...

TOTAL VIEWERS RETENTION

10:30 PM Dragon Ball Super 1,236,000
11:00 PM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 1,103,000  (89.24%)
11:30 PM Black Clover 836,000  (75.79%)
12:00 AM JJBA: Stardust Crusaders 617,000  (73.80%)
12:30 AM Gundam IBO S2 501,000  (81.20%)
1:00 AM Hunter × Hunter 468,000  (93.41%)
1:30 AM Lupin The 3rd 422,000  (90.17%)
2:00 AM Naruto: Shippuden 437,000  (103.55%)
2:30 AM Outlaw Star HD 384,000  (87.87%)
3:00 AM Cowboy Bebop HD 340,000  (88.54%)
3:30 AM GITS: SAC 2nd Gig 303,000  (89.12%)
TOONAMI TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE -  604,273

Hopefully that won't break the mobile view...

Edit: it didn't! Cool!! Shippuden is retention champ, while Black Clover and JoJo are retention chumps. Believe it or not, even starting out almost 2x as high, this average is STILL slightly lower than the DBZ Kai marathon on 11/25!

I think a Black Clover marathon would be OK, especially if it keeps growing its audience in 2018.

ADULTS 18-49 -  Rating Viewers (Est.) Retention

10:30 PM   Dragon Ball Super 0.54     697,000
11:00 PM   DBZ Kai: FC 0.48     620,000  (88.89%)
11:30 PM   Black Clover 0.37     478,000  (77.08%)
12:00 AM   JJBA: S. Crusaders 0.30     387,000  (81.08%)
12:30 AM   Gundam IBO S2 0.23     297,000  (76.67%)
1:00 AM   Hunter × Hunter 0.21     271,000  (91.30%)
1:30 AM   Lupin The 3rd 0.19     246,000  (90.48%)
2:00 AM   Naruto: Shippuden 0.21     271,000  (110.53%)
2:30 AM   Outlaw Star HD 0.19     246,000  (90.48%)
3:00 AM   Cowboy Bebop HD 0.17     220,000  (89.47%)
3:30 AM   GITS: SAC 2nd Gig 0.17     220,000  (100.00%)
ADULTS 18-49 AVERAGE -  0.25     359,364

That's the highest yet in December, but it still falls short of the DBZ Kai marathon on 11/25. Oh well.

Get the hell outta here.

Still, Shippuden's retention is pretty great. As to be expected from best (non-Hinata or Temari) girl Tenten.

The numbers don't lie

As everyone thought, that early Super was decimating the numbers for Toonami. Now we have two shows over a million again, that's something.

BC, Jojo, Gundam = Bye bye 70 percent of the audience.

Gundam is the lowest retainer in the key demo. And that's airing AFTER two shows that had horrible retention.

Stop airing Gundams.

Naruto ties HxH in the key demo while airing 2 slots behind it. If any show deserves to be moved up it's Naruto not HxH.

So, Black Clover is slowly starting, but it is gaining an audience, maybe not at the rate [as] would like, but it is making improvements each week.

Jojo just stains itself and everything after. Maybe it should be switched with Gundam, which is moving into a much more action-oriented phase.

Like I said: JoJo soiled the sheets, Black Clover soiled the mattress.

Your bias towards JoJo isn't gonna save you this time, Jingai.

I never said Black Clover didn't shit the bed, it clearly didn't perform.

Jojo tongue-mopped the toilet after, which clearly stained everything after.

Big difference to have one stumble and one known, consistent face plant in the port-a-potty.....

So, compared to the last schedule pattern, the first ninety minutes of the block are doing better in raw totals. Everything else is about the same, maybe slightly lower in spots. And, of course, the block managed to expand three times to numbers like this. I'd put any talk of Black Clover "failing" as hypothetical with this knowledge.

Hate is bad. It poisons the heart and clouds the mind. Particularly if it is petty hate.

Jojo isn't a bad show; I don't care for it, it does a poorly in the ratings, but it doesn't make someone a bad person for liking it. I've said this before, numerous times regarding numerous shows.

I would be tempted to let Lupin leave, then switch out Jojo and Naruto, letting Jojo kind of flounder at 1:30 is much more appropriate than letting it continue to hinder performance.

I would even contemplate something like this:

10:30 DBS

11:00 DB Kai

11:30 Naruto

12:00 Black Clover

12:30 IBO

1:00  HxH

1:30 Jojo

2:00 Outlaw Star

2:30 Bebop

3:00 Gits

Well, here's a more accurate picture, courtesy of Programming Insider:

Plus, for the 2nd week in a row, Dragon Ball Super beat its Family Guy lead-in, giving the Toonami show the night-winner!

Hopefully better days are coming in 2018, and Dragon Ball Super can keep it up...

  • 2 weeks later...

Yeah. I was just getting at my DVR recordings of the marathon today, and "Ballad of Fallen Angels" began more than five minutes after the start of the timeslot; it finished almost right before the credits started. At least they got things back on track pretty quickly.

I don't expect this formatting to change. Then they would need to schedule two different timeslots for the same episode, which is too advanced to be worth a damn.

Wow. I have no doubt in my mind a JoJo marathon, a Gundam marathon, hell, even a Lupin or Outlaw Star marathon would have done better, but since those shows might not have durable TV licenses, it's Bebop we got. The consequences were the lowest ratings so far in 2017: 426K total viewers and 252K adults 18-49 on average.

Dragon Ball Super tonight just HAS to do better, right??

I don't think streamers-only will ever have exclusive rights to sports. It just isn't their forte. Sports are meant to be watched live, not binged.

Of course, 5 years from now I COULD still be proven wrong! After all, the WWE Network is a streaming-only thing that's been around for almost 4 years now!

The marathon did "Super" well, averaging ~824K in total viewers and an even 508K in adults 18-49--better than the block has done since WAAAAAY back on May 13th! Also, for the month of December, the all-Toonami-slots total viewers average crossed 600K for the first time since June. (In June the block ran from 11-3:30.)

That's a positive sign going into 2018; I just hope the block can keep it up!

Now that's interesting. The DBS episode at 10:30 did comparable to what the glorified rerun that started Toonami after the 8 or 8:30 PM premiere did, but then through the first few episodes, people actually got more and more interested. I'm not sure how this data could be extrapolated to a normal night, but it will be interesting to see if other hot shows like Black Clover can pull off the same thing now that marathons begin fairly early.

I'm calling it now: Pick a 4-leaf or 5-leaf Black Clover marathon on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th...

It's official, DBZ reruns on holidays outperform their normal schedule on non holidays.

Super is making something of a comeback now that it finally "got good" around episode 100. People are interested in it now, they actually talk about it IRL.

Which is pretty funny since the entire reason for the marathons are "Well it's a holiday no ones gonna be watching anyway"

What's Black Clover gonna do, marathon filler? =P

I hope they don’t do a St. Patrick Days marathon. This is supposed to be the glorious time of year with no marathons! Plus you know there will be some April Fools thing 2 weeks later!

That logic could just as easily be used to explain why there should be more marathons in the first few months. Hell, Easter falls on April Fool's this year, and that they don't do a marathon for that is just as irrational as having Halloween marathons, at least in my eyes

I have no idea what they'll do for either event. While I do expect at least an on-air acknowledgement of the anniversary, the ideal way to celebrate it would be to air a movie, but that's very much in the realm of... not going to happen. But if they air a marathon, a lot of viewers would see it as punishment for something and not watch at all. Therefore, it'll probably be better to play the normal lineup. ¬¬

That would be utterly hilarious, especially if they somehow managed to MST3K it up with Tom and Sara riffing on it during the actual movie!
