This week was a HUGE help for Dragon Ball Super at 11 PM. It may still end up being the only Toonami show airing throughout the entire year to average over a million in its official Toonami timeslot. I'm assuming the boost it got is because of Countdown, but it was a pretty darn good episode in its own right, with a combined almost 1.9 million viewers over both airings! We shall see if Countdown keeps it in the millions over the next 2 weeks, and if it will give a significant boost to whatever the hell Toonami decides to air on November 25th as well!

One things to keep in mind is that this year could be considered more profitable due to the fact that they didn’t need to stack the Saturday lineup with FOX shows. The numbers are lower without a doubt but it’s a lot less expensive to air Rick and Morty than Dad, Bobs, etc.. Depending on whatever deal they have with Super, those encore airings may even be free/cheap to air. It’s very possible that this is considered a good result for not having to spend as much on Saturday. We’ve had largely the same lineup since July and I figured if something needed to change, it would’ve by now.

They announced the Kai marathon on Crunchyroll... first comment...

"Since when did Dragon Ball Z Kai go beyond the Cell Saga? I thought it stopped after the 100th episode?"

So we have anime fans on Crunchyroll unaware that the Kai Buu saga even exists, let alone the fact that it's on Toonami.

LOL Croll

LOL Toonami

LOL [as] marketing

LOL Funimation

Take your pick, this is kind of a buffet of failure.

There's a shocking number of people unaware that Toonami exists. It's a pretty big advertising failure.

In a sense, you're right. I don't believe it has ever been advertised on Cable TV outside of Adult Swim. It should be having its commercial plastered all over other Turner networks, especially TNT during movies that also appeal to "geek" fandoms!

There are probably lots of people who still don't know about the new Toonami even after five, going on five and a half years... but as we know, if the shows are rating okay, the higher-ups will see no need in advertising elsewhere.

But they're not rating ok. I mean, I'm sure Demarco said this is ok, but did he say anything the last time Toonami got cancelled? They just lost half of their viewers in a year. There's no one anywhere that thinks that is ok.

I had that same feeling up to late August when the backdoor fiasco happened... everyone thought Toonami was in serious danger, but then LOL BebopAirz and it turned out they were actually gaining a half-hour. If the block really was in danger of being cut with ratings like this, it would've already happened. DeMarco is one to tell us when things aren't going to well, like back in early 2015 with the mass block cut. So unless something sketchy is going on behind the scenes, I guess we don't have to worry about it.

Also, the TV industry is not just going from points A to B and having to fight monsters along the way. There are logistics on top of logistics, always more than what we think we know, so anyone who thinks they're an armchair quarterback and can do it better than those at Williams Street is almost always wrong. Who knows what's been going on? Maybe streaming numbers are up for them and the other Turner channels, so they can afford to sink more money into their anime fetish? Or maybe Rick and Morty did so well for the network that everything else is just running up the score? You know, pad other things out to appease the fans.

And going back to my previous point, I probably should've worded that a little better and included something other than the nihilist talking point. Yeah, Toonami probably should be advertised a little better than it is. There was some guerrilla marketing for Samurai Jack S5 that people liked, and I'd guess they do it again for other big projects like the new FLCL seasons, but other than that, the block has been a niche thing since [as] brought it back and I guess the crew wants it to stay that way, especially if the ratings are in fact decent.

This is true. I believe I mentioned it before, but everytime Toonami's numbers have dipped is usually due to the lead in it has. 2015 started off the year with Boondocks and Black Dynamite leading into Titan reruns. This is what caused the block to be cut in half. Bringing in FOX comedies leading into Kai really gave the block high numbers, but it comes at a cost since they don't own the FOX shows and they are actually spending money to keep Toonami propped up. This year has seen a gradual decrease in total viewers, but they are spending far less money on Saturday night in order to get what Toonami is doing now. Combine that with the overall decline in cable and it's real easy to see why the numbers have been decreasing. There's a direct correlation between the adding/removal of FOX comedies in primetime to Toonami's numbers going up and down. At the beginning of the year we still had American Dad and Bobs Burgers on in primetime along with the 11:00 PM slot still going to comedy before Jack premiered. Now it's Super encore, the stealth premiere, and an hour of Rick. It's taking far less resources for Toonami to stand on it's own than before, so maybe AS is really happy with the results. Otherwise, I can't really see them expanding the block and keeping it at 11. They are usually very reactive to ratings and would've made an adjustment by now if it was a concern.

Does it cost a lot to advertise outside of the block? All other networks do it.  Hell I even see some broadcast commercials on their competitors' networks!  Literally.  Toonami is the only block I know that doesn't even do that!  It seems so basic!

New forum, same crappy Toonami ratings.

Dragonball especially.  When FighterZ looks set to sell several million copies and Super’s ratings continue to struggle, we need to look at Toonami as a delivery mechanism, not the shows.

Oh, so we're BACK!!! Wonderful! But this is gonna take some getting used to...

Anyway, something strange happened this week. It appears that the wrong numbers got reported by ShowBuzzDaily--or are they the right numbers? Their chart indicates that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Gundam IBO MIGHT have only gotten 0.24:

Final-Cable-2017-Nov-11.SAT_.png

Why 0.29 and 0.30, which are Gundam and JoJo respectively in MEN 18-49, got reported in the update is beyond me. We also still don't have Toonami numbers from Programming Insider so these are largely uncorroborated. But we do have TV By The Numbers, who gave an unusual nod to Dragon Ball Super:

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/saturday-cable-ratings-nov-11-2017/

They reported Gundam and JoJo simply as "0.2", which is probably 0.24 since a 0.25 would round up to 0.3, as we see with "COLLEGE FOOTBALL AFT" on ESPN2, which is a 0.25 above but a "0.3" on TVBTN. So, I'm going with 0.24 for Gundam and JoJo. It's also true that Gundam actually BEAT JoJo slightly. Here's what I calculated from the chart above:

11/11/2017 Dragon Ball Super (8:30)   #9 (+5)
Adults 18-34 Rating -  0.43

So it looks like there is now a limited time after you make a post that it can be edited. Guess my days of half-assing multiple threads, then getting home to embellish them are over.

But I digress. 190K in Adults 18-34 for Gundam & JoJo = YUCK!

At least the Adults 18-49 are still just slightly better than the unholy megabomb night back on 12/13/14, as they look like they're over 300K but only slightly. 0.24 is still scary low for shows airing at midnight and 12:30 as the unholy trinity of college football, boxing, and Live PD reigns supreme now on Saturday nights.

76 percent for Super. 81 percent for Kai. 79 for Jojo.

Those are some bad numbers. Really bad. Kai is no longer holding Super the way it used to.

But since those 3 shows wiped out 60 percent of Toonami viewers.... it made all the other shows have really high retention!

FLCL 2: Electric Boogaloo is the most unnecessary sequel since Son of the Mask.

Yeah, and I have a hard time believing they can recapture the magic of the first one.

They're also going to find out that FLCL is more of a cult hit, and won't translate into ratings.
