Hi all! In last year's inaugural drive, we successfully raised $520 to keep the lights on, and another $620 for sick kids via St. Jude's. It was enough of a success that we're ready for round two. Here's how it will work this year - all money donated to the server fund will be split 50/50, with half funding website costs and half going to a charity selected by you. A number of charities have been brought up for this event, including: ASPCA Code.org Extra Life Winn Feline Foundation Alley Cat Allies If you are interested in one of these, or another charity program, please speak up and discuss! We will send the funds to whichever program garners the most support, made out in the name of J. Michael Crow (Admin/Luuv). All donations dated 12/4/19 through the end of the 2019 will be treated as part of the drive and split 50/50. Anyone who donates $20 or more during the event can line up for a custom rank as thanks, and anyone who donates can cash in on some free rep points if they like - just let me know in this thread or via PM! Please let us know your preference of charities, or why your charity would beat someone else's charity in a fistfight. And again, the list I've included is not comprehensive, it is made up of various charities that people have brought up. Let us know if you have any questions or have any ideas on how to improve the drive. Thanks!

I'm talking six-figure loans with two-figure interest backlogs that are higher than most people's principal.

So the question for high-balance individuals becomes: do you pay the minimum and let the balance grow on the hope that you pay 37 cents on the dollar in two decades, or do you pay enough to actively shrink the balance? I've been in purgatory, paying enough to freeze the interest and shave a little off the top, while trying to figure out the answer. But the reality is that there are so many variables (politics, decades) that there is no objectively right answer.

I was hoping to send out an e-blast tonight announcing this year's charity/fundraiser drive and will mention this too like I did last year, unless you don't want me too.

@jackiemarie90 they are playing on discord. you'd have to sign in and ask rogue to invite you to the private jackbox room.

That's the public service program, where you have to work for government or a non-profit for 10 years and make 120 on-time payments. The first class hitting the ten year mark was 2017 or 2018 and Betsy DeVos either through intention or incompetence denied thousands of people who applied for final forgiveness. I'm in the regular old public sector bucket. 25 years of income-based payments and the remainder is forgiven but treated as taxable income upon forgiveness.

i am about a year ahead on my mortgage, but I will never catch up on student loans so we'll see whether the federal gov't honors its commitments in another 20 years, and whether that forgiveness will be taxed.

i wanted to use the term "paddlin" but seems like that's covered
