I very rarely try donuts. They are actually kind of difficult to do, the few tries I've made have been okay at best, kind of greasy though and not terribly fluffy. Coffee cake is another story, I'm pretty decent at that. Cooking isn't hard, most of it is just basic techniques and a lot of attention to detail. You don't need a ton of gadgets either, just a good cutting board, a good quality chef's knife in the eight inch range (yes size matters), a good quality paring knife, a honing steel and patience. Baking is the thing where you have to be super accurate, it is more science than art. Recipes are really more akin to formulas, whereas savory recipes can be more easily modified or adapted to reflect your own taste.

I think it tends to be healthier too, I mean, if you make your own things for the most part you can avoid chemicals that look like they came off the side of a paint can. It is a Zen kind of thing and a healthier kind of thing, but no matter how much I want it to be different, if I make a scratch donut, it's still a donut....

I've got two work related parties to attend. One I can get by with just a suit and tie, the other I have to get my tux out. Day in the life I suppose. I wonder if I could get a red velvet dinner jacket in time for the less formal one.

I usually just use apricot jam for strudel or maybe part of a glaze for a ham. I make my own lemon curd, actually I tend to make most of my own food from scratch, it helps me keep to my diet. Well I cheat less....

I prefer hadzig myself, but I'm biased. Our family calls it Hadzig, but it is often called choereg online. Might be a regional thing....

Mmmmmmm. I only eat marm with toast, or with brussel sprouts. Sometimes I cheat and use it for citrus chicken, but most of the time it is a toast kind of thing, and even then only if I've been good about carbs. Lemon curd is strictly a spring/summer dessert kind of thing for me, with whipped cream and strawberries or poached apples.

I remember Justin. I can remember having a Bombay Sapphire and Lime and posting in IB about the Bible as a moral guide with him. It was an interesting conversation. I miss those sorts of threads, civil discourse with other people and no agendas, just the exchange of ideas. Wistful memories I suppose. Think I'll go fix myself a Bombay Sapphire, and one for Justin....
